to not understand why Charles Manson is in prison?

Maybe I haven't looked into the case deep enough or have a good enough understanding.

But from what I can gather he never actually killed anyone. And yes he might have brainwashed his followers who did murder those 7 people but surely they are accountable for their own actions?

I'm not saying he's a good person who doesn't deserve to be there, I'm just confused as to what he was charged with to be in prison for the rest of his life.

op NEVER use aibu to start a thread if you want sensible answers. of course it's okay to ask questions that you want answered but i would steer clear of this topic

how are people meant to understand with such sarcastic answers?

catham · 01/09/2013 21:32

you know like how people say 'there are no stupid questions?' well on aibu there are!

catham · 01/09/2013 21:32

(that was a dig at the sarky posters op not you!)

LuckyStrikes · 01/09/2013 21:35

Yes understood catham - lesson learned Smile

If I ever decide to post again it will not be in aibu.

Actually, in case you ever do come back, mnhq will change thread titles if you ask them. And move threads to a different section. They will sometimes pull posts or threads.
( helpful as we all post stuff we don't quite mean sometimes)

OP - I've followed this thread with interest. I wasn't born when Manson was at his murderous worst. I've learned a fair bit...

LuckyStrikes · 01/09/2013 21:57

Thanks Pagwatch

lotsofcheese I wasn't either. It's a very interesting and disturbing case, which I obviously don't know very much about, but I've learned a lot more about it today.

AIBU is pretty good fun to read, though, OP. Smile

Icedink · 01/09/2013 22:40

Some harsh posts on here! LuckyStrikes I didn't know much about Charles Manson either and have learnt a lot from this thread. I read lots of threads on here from people asking for clarification of things they don't understand so I don't understand why everyones being so snippy Confused

EldritchCleavage · 01/09/2013 22:45

He directed that those people be killed. Similar laws here, of conspiracy and common enterprise or whatever it is called.

There are one or two ways that people can be convicted even if they did not physically kill the victim. Think of hitman murders-the person who hires the hitman is also guilty of murder, not just the bloke they hired to do the actual act of killing.

saintlyjimjams · 02/09/2013 07:14

The OTT shouty responses from people on this thread are far stranger than OP's original question IMO. Welcome to AIBU I guess.

As a result of the question i read the wiki article, although did end up getting quite confused as it's complex (& the wiki entry isn't that well written). Will read some more.

saintlyjimjams · 02/09/2013 07:16

And am now off to read about Charles Bronson as I hadn't realised there were petitions etc to get him released.

LessMissAbs · 02/09/2013 10:15

Aside from whats been said already, there is a tendency for some to turn criminals into celebrities and pay too much attention to them. Lets not give Manson that privilege there are enough idiots already that do that

OP, its really not hard to find out information about Charles Manson and his crimes on the internet, without asking questions first. Since his crimes were so notorious and unpleasant, perhaps people were shocked by your OP, which comes across slightly disrespectful to the victims.

redandblacks · 02/09/2013 16:10

Would be interesting to see what the responses wd be if this had been posted in legal. After all it is the legal perspective OP seems to be interested in and whether the same decision wd have been reached within a different legal framework - even current law in the same state

LuckyStrikes · 02/09/2013 16:17

redandblacks I didn't even realise there was a legal part, definitely would have suited there much better.

LessMissAbs please tell me how I have been disrespectful to the victims? Did I say Manson didn't deserve to be in prison? No. He didn't commit the murders himself for obvious reasons, which is why I wondered from a legal perspective why was he in prison - not the moral side.

But yes I'm clearly a horrible person who is very disrespectful to people who have been brutally murdered.
