Tempted by this thread, I have just been looking on Ebay, but the number of different models is very confusing. What should I be looking for and what do you Kenwood experts recommend, please?

SHarri13 · 01/09/2013 16:32

Get one, I got a kitchenaid a few months ago and it's amazing. I'm a style over substance girl Wink

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/09/2013 16:33

MIL still has the Kenwood she bought when fairly newly married, and it is still going strong - and I think they still have a reputation for being reliable, which is why I would choose one.

Of course, the fact that there is no way I can afford a kitchenaid might be colouring my view, and I am more than a bit Envy of people who do have one. Blush

IloveJudgeJudy · 01/09/2013 16:35

I would go to car boots and see what you can find, or jumble sales. DB has got a couple of quite old Kenwoods for an absolute pittance by doing that. Secondhand should be perfectly fine, even ones about 40 years old.

I have one and agree, I wouldn't be without it. Unfortunately, when I got mine (20+ years ago) it was the time when Kenwood were experimenting with plastic bowls. They're not as good as the metal ones, at all, but I can't justify the £50 or so it costs to get a metal one.

IsaacCox · 01/09/2013 16:41

I have a raspberry ice KitchenAid. I love love love it. It looks great in my kitchen :)

LayMizzRarb · 01/09/2013 16:46

I have a Kitchenaid candy apple artisan cordless blender.

You can put a balloon whisk on instead of the blade. It is the best!

lifelorn · 01/09/2013 16:51

I had a vintage Kenwood which sadly died 4 years ago, went to buy a new one. The quality was so poor (very plasticky body)and the engine torque was nowhere near as good as the Kitchen Aid. bought the Kitchen Aid and use it regularly (make all my own bread). Mine is kept in a cupboard so function is the main requirement for me.

I bought a Kenwood K-Mix last year from Costco.
It's lovely. A dark red (they only had red at the time).
It's got a K beater, silicone beater, dough hook, whisk and a plastic bowl guard.

I bought a handheld a few years back (Kenwood) again from Costco, about £40. But it's quite heavy.

Why not just ask Paul Hollywood over to your house and admire him while he cooks ?
Smile

I formally adopted my Mum's kenwood that she was given as a wedding present in 1970. She'd stopped using it very much and I managed to get it out of the house before she regretted it!I use it at least once a week, its still going strong and is complete with all the attachments. I can't believe how sturdy and strong it is.......I love my Mum!! Grin

It does have a plastic bowl, rather than a metal one (which means I don't put it in the dishwasher - i'm not sure 40 year old plastic was designed for the dishwasher) but its a really strong plastic iyswim.

twistyfeet · 01/09/2013 17:39

I really want a dough hook as my hands and wrists are getting too weak to make bread now (breadmakers are shite. I have one). And cakes. My mum made delish cakes and we used to lick out the bowl and the mixing tool.
How could she have lost it/given it away? wah

My sister has a Kenwood, I have a Kitchenaid. We both love them very much but mine is so beautiful that it sits out all the time whilst hers goes back in the cupboard

You will not regret a Kenwood OP! If you can afford it, I say go right ahead. ..

Habbibu · 01/09/2013 17:59

Much as I love my Kenwood, I never use it to make bread - Dan Lepard's hardly knead method is super easy and make great bread.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/09/2013 19:44

Aw yes twisty.
The words "Who wants rawcake " is enough to bring my DC out from their rooms to claim the bowl and the beater.

It does taste better before it's cooked Grin

MsPickle · 01/09/2013 19:53

I blew up my Granny's 1960ish kenwood she passed onto me. I missed using it.

I just got it back, repaired. I'm very very very pleased as life hasn't been the same without it! DM treated herself to a new one. It's amazing too.

lougle · 01/09/2013 20:02

I have my Mum's old Kenwood (35+ years old) and it's going strong. Mum and Dad treated themselves to a new one and passed it on. It's my pride and joy.

maybe you could try gumtree...occasionally have things going cheap to a good home? I love it for bread but I make pretty basic stuff..nothing too artisan. The only thing that annoys me is you need to give everything a stir before using the whisk attachment as it can leave things untouched at the very bottom. If I win the lottery I will treat you to one...or you can have mine and I will get one that matches my kitchen!

AnneEyhtMeyer · 02/09/2013 20:19

LJL69 - sounds like you need to adjust your head bit - it doesn't leave anything on the bottom as long as it is set right.

foreverondiet · 02/09/2013 20:23

I got one 16 years ago as wedding present. Still going strong doubt I will ever have to replace. Still don't understand how people bake esp biscuits (that can't be done in food processor) or bread without - I guess by hand Confused....

misskatamari · 02/09/2013 20:26

I LOVE my kenwood chef! DH surprised me with it when wed been dating about 8 months (as he wanted to propose but thought it might be a but early so thought he'd get me a mixer instead Smile)

It is amazing! Waaaaay better than a kitchenaid - although they are prettier. There are just so many attachments (sausage maker for eg) and it is just a godsend for baking. I hope you manage to get one soon OP!

LondonInHighHeeledBoots · 02/09/2013 20:36

I luffs mine. Tis about 30 years old or something, twas a present from a friend of my granny's who was diagnosed coeliac then diabetic in the same week so didn't bake any more. So far it has made three wedding cakes, will be making mine in a few weeks and made 150 cupcakes on Friday. It's awesome. I wanted a Kitchen Aid but I think mine is pretty enough - she's built for strength and meat on her bones like me now after getting the cake machine Grin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 02/09/2013 20:36

The kitchenaid has a sausage maker amongst lots of other things. I'm a style over substance girl as well. My candy apple KA is a bloody marvel and I love it to bits.
