to walk through London in the middle of the night instead of getting a taxi?

Did this last night, after I stayed too late at a friend's house and thought there was a night bus. Turns out there wasn't. It was only about a mile and a half and it was about 1am. Quite a lot of cars still driving around and I was walking mostly on main roads, which were lit, through non-dodgy area. I felt pretty safe.

Now wondering whether maybe it wasn't a bit reckless (my parents, e.g., would freak if they knew I'd done it) but also know that statistically I'm far more likely to be attacked by someone I know... Would you walk by yourself at night in a city?

Yes. Ilive in London and have done so.
Obviously there are areas I wouldn't.

Trills · 31/08/2013 22:11

"London" is pretty vague.

I would walk through some areas of some cities, not through other areas, probably not if I didn't know where I was or where I was going.

sillyoldfool · 31/08/2013 22:12

yes, and I often do, and have never had any problems.

toomuchtoask · 31/08/2013 22:12

Yes. I have done many times in lots of cities. Only if I know where I'm going though. Never had an issue.

stemstitch · 31/08/2013 22:12

It was Wandsworth/Clapham

Busy main roads with lots of people around and shops/bars etc - of course.

Quiet back streets or estates - no.

PoppyWearer · 31/08/2013 22:13

Used to do it lots in London.

stemstitch · 31/08/2013 22:14

It was main roads, but only cars around - only about 3 people walking during the whole journey

Ah nappy valley
The hordes of marauding Boden wearing yummy mummies would be asleep by then.

ExitPursuedByABear · 31/08/2013 22:14

I used to walk through central London whilst three sheets to the wind with no problem.

Anthracite · 31/08/2013 22:14

Wandsworth/Clapham is buzzing at 1am. I would not be worried if on main roads (but would probably get a taxi to save the walk and get home sooner).

Bowlersarm · 31/08/2013 22:15

That's fine. Just don't walk through alleyways or across parks.

squeakytoy · 31/08/2013 22:15

I would have got a cab. Too many muggings, random attacks, and rapes for me to take the risk in that part of London

dollywashers · 31/08/2013 22:16

I used to live off Battersea Rise. Hated even parking my car and running to the house even though in theory I knew it was a fairly safe residential street. So I wouldn't have been that brave. In a group I would have been fine.

SPBisResisting · 31/08/2013 22:16

SPBisResisting · 31/08/2013 22:17

Oh and I wslkrf thriuh Farringdon at midnight.
(Clueless about London)

valiumredhead · 31/08/2013 22:17

Centre of London yes, often used to get the last train home out of charring cross, packed the same as in the middle of the day.

slurredlines · 31/08/2013 22:17

Only you can say.

I used to happily walk from the seafront in Brighton right up into the student areas on the hilll (a good 30 mins walk) at 2 or 3 in the morning as there were lots of people around.

Now I live on a quiet suburban housing estate and don't like walking 5 minutes round the corner to my friend's house after dark (say, 8PM in winter) because the total absence of people on the streets just feels eery.

MrsDavidBowie · 31/08/2013 22:19

Dd has just phoned to see if I could pick her up from a party...she was being brought home at midnight but is tired.
I can't...have had wine. Dh not well and has gone to bed.

She'll have to get the bus...we're in SW London.

stemstitch · 31/08/2013 22:20

Glad I am nbu!

Centre of London I wouldn't think twice as it is always busy tbh. It was slightly eerie but actually really nice to walk fast without people in the way!

Nothing wrong with that. I have walked through Kilburn many times at that hour.

ImagineJL · 31/08/2013 22:20

As a teenager I was raped in a shop doorway in the centre of Bristol at 6.30am one bright summer Saturday morning, while on my way to get an early coach for a weekend away. A car drove past but didn't stop, as did a motorbike. So I would always advise getting a taxi. I wish I had.

MrsDavidBowie · 31/08/2013 22:20

SPB ..have you had a drink? Grin
