maggots. .help.

soooziesheep · 31/08/2013 14:05

Im posting this in aibu, basically because if I don't ask for help over this I won't get to leave the house today and I will --un-reasonably go insane and possibly kill DP.

we have issues with flys laying eggs and then producing armys of maggots in/all over our bins. Happened last week and took DP two days to get rid of them all. He scrubbed the bin till it sparkled after the bin men came but is gett paranoid over them coming back. Lo and behold the fuckers came back. .and now our nice day out now sees me sat inside at 2pm on a sunny Saturday watching fecking peppa pig untik he's satisfied he's dealt with it. im too poorly to go out alone today.

Please. .please..tell me. How do we stop them. is there a spray. a repellent? We double bag our bin bags and tightly tie then up. Always make sure lid in secure. ..neighbours don't seem to have the same problem! ?

Some of our neighbours have a bin cleaning service where they come round and clean their wheelie bins.

soooziesheep · 31/08/2013 14:09

Oh my..didn't realise how angry I sound lol! very fed up now. It turns DP into some crazed maggot killer twitching at the curtains at night trying to see if he can see them for fear of waking up to more in the morning! its so weird. We spent a fortune on strong cleaners for the bin but its just weird how the flies are so attracted to our bin all of a sudden. .

Every time after the bins are emptied before anything else goes in there fill with very hot (as near boiling as the bin will stand) water. Sloosh it all around. This is the only thing that stopped our maggots in the summer, cleaners did not work. And make sure you bag everything that goes in there in really good quality bin bags, or two cheap ones.
This solved it for us.

CleverClod · 31/08/2013 14:35

Stick one of those fly carcher things ( like a long bit of sellotape) inside the bin, that'll get the buggers!

I've had maggots once in my bin, but only when the weather was very hot, and they haven't come back since then. Sorry I can't help more.

Tee2072 · 31/08/2013 14:37

Boiling water and bleach. Scrub with a long handled brush. Repeat, rinse well, allow to dry.

And calm down. Your DP too. They are just baby flies. They aren't going to kill you.

opalescent · 31/08/2013 14:40

Blimey. Just splash pour some boiling water into the bin. Then give it a quick rinse out with the hose. 10 mins tops.
Go out & enjoy day.
The maggots will stop coming when the weather cools down.

marriedinwhiteisback · 31/08/2013 14:42

Douse liberaly with boiling water (probably 6-8 kettles) - you need a sturdy bin. Add a drop of disinfectant if you like - old fashioned stuff like zoflora or do what I did and sellotape plenty of plastic round the bin and take it to the dump Can you still get metal bins - then you could light a fire in it in the garden - that Would sort the maggots out.

Lethologica · 31/08/2013 14:43

You can buy bin fly spray from Amazon. It's doesnt matter if your bin is not sterilised so I wouldn't worry too much about bleach etc. the files are interested in the 'fresh' waste.
I use te wheely bin bin bags when its very hot and try to seal up the bag after I put something into the bin.
The best thing though is to give it a little spray with fly spray every day or so. I also try to not leave food waste in the bin too long. If I have waste meat sometimes I put it in the freezer until the day before the rubbish is due to be collected.

badtime · 31/08/2013 14:43

I was going to say boiling water too.

pointythings · 31/08/2013 14:45

Boiling water always works for us - and the local bird population really likes cooked maggots so they don't hang around for long once you've tipped the bin out.

And I second well closed good quality bin liners, we have not had any maggots at all this summer although it has been very very hot.

Misspixietrix · 31/08/2013 16:30

OP thoroughly recommend the Bin Cleaning services. It's Only something Silly like £3.50 for one clean a month. Otherwise lots and lots of boiling water plenty of Jayes fluid etc. You said you double bag everything but make sure its securely tied etc and any thing in there that might attract them is washed out before being thrown away or secured so they cant get in. Raw meat packaging seems to attract them. If you can tiè it up chuck them in a nearby bin if you can as they get emtied practically everyday so its not sitting festering in your Bin for weeks until Bin Day. I got them once after absentmindedly throwing away a spatched chicken carcass without wrapping property in the middle of a very hot Summer! I can kind of understand your DH they drove me crazy too. Oh Fly Killer . Plenty of Fly Spray/Poster was also thrown in the Bin too. ~

thismumismad · 31/08/2013 17:07

I wipe neat zoflora around the rim and the lid it seems to keep them away

Vulgar · 31/08/2013 19:28

I sprinkle in some "bin buddy" I get it next to the bin bags in morrisons

pianodoodle · 31/08/2013 20:13

Boiling water and Jeyes fluid :)

pianodoodle · 31/08/2013 20:14

Or... if you have a steam cleaner/steam mop give it a good blast with the nozzle!

MyNameIsSuz · 31/08/2013 20:18

Oh god, we live in an upstairs flat and have just had maggots in our kitchen bin for the second time. It's tricky to wash out the bin as no outside space at all to do it, so has to be done in the bath. Anything that will get rid of them I will happily buy!

Sparrowlegs248 · 31/08/2013 20:28

You need to stop the flies getting in the bin (how are they doing that??) or stop the flies laying eggs on stuff you put in the bin. Our issues with this was when the cat didn't eat alk his meat and it was left in his bowl. We emptied it into the food bin but it was the day after collection, so the nasty bastard fly eggs on the cat food turned into maggots and ate through the bag!

littlemisswise · 31/08/2013 20:30

I use Bin Buddy too. Haven't had a problem with maggots since we started using it. We bought it in Wilko's.

BonaDrag · 31/08/2013 20:31

I second bin buddy..

Yeuuuch

frogwatcher42 · 31/08/2013 20:33

God, they're only maggots. They are really not going to kill you or come looking for you in the night!

Keep bin in the shade if you can. Put bags in there as soon as they are ready to go out of house so they are not sat around all day. Don't let flies into the bins in the house (or onto food before it goes in bins).

We have never had maggots, but see them regularly in the kills the cats leave around in the garden. They get picked up and fed to the hens who love them. The dds do that bit for me!

And why does you dp have to deal with them? Why on the earth don't you? They are only the same as caterpillars really.

OverTheFieldsAndFarAway · 31/08/2013 20:37

Pour neat bleach around the inside of your clean bin. It will keep the flies at bay.

EachAndEveryHighway · 31/08/2013 22:07

If it's a wheelie bin, what's the big deal? Just hold your breath when you sling rubbish in and get the lid down again sharpish ... job's a good'un. Smile
