How many sleazy public gaffes does he have to make before his wife stops saying "it's cool" and tells him to fucking rein it in and stop making a fool of her?

And shave off that stupid facial hair. You cunt.

There's lots. That's the joys of interpretation.

I still don't see how the lyrics to a song make him, as a person, a rape apologist. It is quite a loaded accusation and I was just wondering if anyone could elaborate.

There's no part of that song that says anything about a woman saying no and the man ignoring her.

Celadorhasacatandawaveequation · 31/08/2013 14:25

Grin squoosh

I've often wondered why his wife doesn't put her foot down. Although I like the music itself, it does have questionable lyrics and the amount of thrusting and parading around he does is off the scale.

What I am trying to say is YANBU!

Idocrazythings · 31/08/2013 14:26

I don't interpret it that way; and I also think he is also probably very clever getting himself a lot of free advertising for his CD. His wife may be more than happy with the royalties he is earning their family who knows? But by keeping up the controversy you are probably just earning him more money.

I also feel sorry for Miley Cyrus. I think she just had an epic fail at trying to be like the Lady GaGa's of the the music world.

Wonderstuff · 31/08/2013 14:35

I dislike 'maybe I'm going deaf.. You know you want it but you're a good girl' to me it's the whole 'of course you say that but you don't mean it' thing.
'You the hottest bitch in this place' is nothing other than an appalling mysoginistc attitude. The video.. Grim, very very grim.

BulletProofVestyBunny · 31/08/2013 14:42

I can't understand anyone listening to those lyrics and NOT getting the impression it's rape apologistic, or at the very, very least misogynistic. Confused

ShakeAndVac · 31/08/2013 14:45

Whee, another thread! How many does that make it now?! To say nobody on here supposedly likes him, he's sure getting a lot of Mumsnet attention - it's getting a bit obsessive now!

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 31/08/2013 14:46

It's misogynistic but that doesn't equal rape apologist. But that's the lyrics of a song, and the way you interpret. I'm talking about the statements that he, Robin Thicke, is a rape apologist.

Mintyy · 31/08/2013 15:00

Oh who cares? Hundreds if not thousands of women and some men too, no doubt, find the lyrics of that particular song objectionable. That's reason enough for me not too like him, its not a question of "interpretation".

TheCrackFox · 31/08/2013 15:02

Robin Thick agreed (and made millions) to singing a song about rape so that make him a rape apologist.

He is very sleazy.

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 31/08/2013 15:12

But it's not about rape is it now?

Don't like it, fair enough, but let's keep some perspective!

sashh · 31/08/2013 15:19

I still don't see how the lyrics to a song make him, as a person, a rape apologist. It is quite a loaded accusation and I was just wondering if anyone could elaborate.

I'll let Mr Thicke answer

"We tried to do everything that was taboo. Bestiality, drug injections, and everything that is completely derogatory towards women"

Then there is the lovely line in the song, "I'll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two".

BulletProofVestyBunny · 31/08/2013 15:28

Absolutely sashh, but you'll still have someone come along and tell you not to be so silly, it's just a catchy song. Hmm

Birdsgottafly · 31/08/2013 15:29

Unless you are going to post the whole interview, it is obvious that you are taking the parts that prove your argument, whilst leaving out all of the other bits.

He is supposed to look " old man-ish", or sleazy, that is the point, it fits in with what the whole thing is about.

Interesting that his behaviour is given credit for making his wife look stupid, whilst women who behave in a similar manner let themselves down, how's that for a misogynist POV?

MissOtisRegretsMadam · 31/08/2013 15:33

Robin thicke did not sing the line about tearing your ass in two... It was the rapper Ti

Why is none of the hate directed to him or pharrel who co wrote and produced the song?

MissOtisRegretsMadam · 31/08/2013 15:36

I posted too soon...

Rap artists (mainly black) constantly make music with lyrics like this and worse but when a white man in his 30s does it causes uproar? Why is that?

hardboiledpossum · 31/08/2013 15:37

I have no idea who robin is and i haven't heard the song but after reading the lyrics i have lost all respect for pharell.

MissOtisRegretsMadam · 31/08/2013 15:39

Pharrel has done loads more previous songs of this kind check out "lap dance" on you tube

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 31/08/2013 15:41

Everything else I've heard of thicke is sickly sweet saccharine stuff.

Gunznroses · 31/08/2013 16:27

Not sure what the big fuss is really about, yes his song has awful lyrics. Has someone just woken up and realised that most songs, wether its pop, RnB, Rap, Rock are awful? Misogynistic? What's so different about Mr Thicke? From the black rappers, to the white rock singers, the old Black Sabbath, justin Timberlake, Rhianna, et al all of them, all their lyrics are horrendous, i hear very few complaints about them, everyone still bops along.

What's so special about Mr Thicke? I haven't seen his video but hardly groundbreaking stuff from what i've heard. If we want to complain we need to start complaining about all types of music that denigrate women, including the women who dance along in these videos, and those women who are affirming those stereotypes in tneir own appalling music not just the odd male singer.

CaptChaos · 31/08/2013 16:35

Ah, so.... everyone does it so it's ok to be a rapey misogynist then.

Excellent.

Just to clarify.

If you write/sing songs where there are 'blurred lines' between non meaning yes and non meaning no, then you are a rape apologist. And a bit of a git.

Gunznroses · 31/08/2013 16:46

I don't think I said anywhere that its 'okay' so please read my post properly. The summation of my post is that you are not going to achieve anything by singling out just one singer whilst happily ignoring all others, if you want to make a change then we need to make a more concerted effort addressing all types of music that will force all musicians/writers/producers etc to change the way women are protrayed in their music and the message they are sending out to their audiences.
