AIBU to have been nervous at man trying to deliver parcel at 9pm

i feel like an idiot for being nervous when a delivery guy in a car just knocked on the door with a parcel (not for me, in the end, but the name sounded similar to mine, he had a foreign accent). I live on the edge of a village and there are no street lights, i don't have a porch light and my indoor hall light has blown, so could barely see the guy. DH out for the night, so when delivery guy steps towards me to try to show me the name and address on parcel was IBU to say sorry and close the door on him? I feel like such a wuss. Popped round to neighbours back door as i was feeling nervous about being home alone and missus next door immediately legs it down the road to see what he's up to; she is so much braver than me....turns out he was legit....was i being a dick in closing the door on him?

No, YANBU. Whilst it probably felt hostile for the poor delivery guy, 9pm is rather late. There are so any opportunists out there, you have to be careful.

lljkk · 30/08/2013 21:28

It's socially odd, but a lot of these delivery guys are self-employed fitting the work around other life commitments.

Moomoomie · 30/08/2013 21:30

If you are that worried, you did not need to open the door to him. It is your prerogative to not open the door when someone knocks.

ArtVandelay · 30/08/2013 21:32

Ooooh foreign accent! Bound to be a scallywag ....

Monkeyandanimal · 30/08/2013 21:50

No, not the foreign accent marking him as a scallywag! Just making it hard to understand whether he was actually saying my name or another; even my neighbour came back saying parcel was in my name but when i read label it was just a similar name. Am not that judgemental/sheltered as to assume all foreigners are up to no good!

Yanbu, tbh I wouldn't answer the door if its dark and I'm nit ecpecting anyone round. It's sound silly, but its makes me feel uncomfortable

pigsDOfly · 30/08/2013 22:10

No YANBU OP. It's really late to be delivering parcels. If in doubt I don't answer the door.

I live on a busy road in a student area and I'm always having strangers knocking on my door. One told me he was trying to find his friends and all he had was a description of the house - clearly not a very good description.

The other night someone knocked at almost 11 o'clock and when I asked through the door who it was he said 'can you open the door'. He asked a couple of times and then went away. Obviously I didn't open the door, and although I expect he was just looking for his mates and had the wrong house, it did make me feel a bit nervous. Perhaps, like you, I'm a bit of a wuss

Misspixietrix · 30/08/2013 22:10

YNBU. I'm a LP and the Door never gets answered after 7pm unless I know it's family members who have usually called beforehand to say they are on their way ~

Footface · 30/08/2013 22:14

You got me thinking, I don't think if open the door even if the
Person said they were the police. They'd have to put their warrant card through the letter box

Jan49 · 30/08/2013 22:28

I think you're right to be careful. I wouldn't have opened the door.

I once had a young adult man ring our bell at 2am. I'm a single parent and was with my adult son, about to go to bed and lights still on. I think that's why he picked our house as the rest of the street was in darkness. I wanted to check who was there because knowing someone was on the doorstep at that time was scary. I spoke to him through the glass in the front door. I think he was lost because there were diversions on the buses, so I gave him directions but without opening the door. It felt slightly surreal.

Yanbu. This happened to us too, but luckily dh was in so went to the door. I think the drivers are freelance in some way so manage their own hours/workload (even though the package was off Amazon I think in our case, came to the door at 9.30pm!). I guess actually people are more likely to be in after, say, 7pm, than during the day. But still, not normal practice so you weren't being unreasonable.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 30/08/2013 23:06

Yanbu but fix the lighting situation asap!

Misspixietrix · 30/08/2013 23:09

What Beaunatt said actually reminded me that a friends DH delivers Parcels in the evening and starts his shift at 5pm. But you shouldn't feel.silly about something that Isnt the norm as it were ~

ArtVandelay · 31/08/2013 00:00

Okay sorry! But apart from anything else - its up to you if you want to answer your door or not. Don't fret :)

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 31/08/2013 00:06

Yodel officially deliver to domestic premises until 9pm, but we've had stuff far later than that.

Monkeyandanimal · 31/08/2013 10:04

Thanks for replies; in the sunny light of day it all seems a bit foolish. Still feel a bit sorry for the delivery guy as he went off looking for the right address and I bet he got a few similar responses. Getting light fixed asap, Neo, and I kind of opened door without thinking; just assumed it was my neighbour.....
