To think size 12 is not "heavy"

CruCru · 30/08/2013 18:51

I keep seeing comments on here from people who are size 10/12 who think they are heavy. I would never think this is even remotely heavy, just a healthy slim size.

I'm 5'1, about 9.5 stone at the moment, 10/12 depending on make and I'd say 'sturdy' rather than 'heavy'. Depends where you have what - how much is muscle, whether fat is on tummy or legs.

AnyoneButLulu · 30/08/2013 20:12

I'm pretty close to your measurements Lucille and no I'm definitely not heavy by civilian standards - we're "true" size 12s. But if we were 5 foot nothing with the same measurements. And I reckon I'd need the best part of an extra stone to fit a vanity sized 12 (M&S or Next) which would make me fairly chunky.

Squitten · 30/08/2013 20:13

I was very lucky to lose a lot of weight through BF DC2 and I dropped from a size 16 to a 12. I'm 5,10" and it was definitely nice and slim on me.

Fingers crossed DC3 isn't about to ruin it Sad

catinboots · 30/08/2013 20:14

My friend's husband referred to me as 'chunky and big-boned' on holiday.

I'm 5'5" and 10st 4lb with quite a small frame. Okay I'm no Kylie but I'm hardly Miranda.

I hated him silently for the rest if the holiday.

DeathByTray · 30/08/2013 20:19

At one point, my sister and I were exactly the same weight and height but I always looked much slimmer.

I have a very slim top half with a flat chest and long neck (sound like a bloody giraffe). All my weight is on my hips and legs. If I dress to suit my shape, I give the illusion of being very slim.

DSis carries her weight around her middle, has a good size bust and rounder face but very skinny legs.

Comparing height/weight/clothes size is useless.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/08/2013 20:19

My friend's husband once asked me how on earth my skinny legs managed to hold up my boobs. Git. :)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/08/2013 20:22

The weird thing is that I am often a 12 in M&S (especially in tops and trousers - dresses and skirts can often be a ten) but I am also a 12 in Topshop. And in Whistles, depending on the style, I sometimes need an 8. Tbh I just buy what fits - I have from size XS to size 16 in my wardrobe, depending on the shop, style, phase of the moon etc.

GrandstandingBlueTit · 30/08/2013 20:24

The thing is, if you are overweight, you are never, ever going to fathom how a size 12 might be considered a bit hefty on some people. You just aren't.

However, when you are that size 12 person and can grab wodges of thigh and tum, then you do understand.

But woe betide anyone who is a size 12 expecting any sympathy for not being happy with their body...! They're expected to be grateful, even though women are conditioned to be unhappy with their lot, no matter how nice and functional and unique their bodies are.

DeathByTray · 30/08/2013 20:24

I did once walk behind a woman with a very large bust and the tiniest feet I have ever seen. They were toddler size feet !!

I marvelled at how she managed to stay upright.

marriedinwhiteisback · 30/08/2013 20:25

Agree about build too. I am broad and teutonic and even at size 8 my shoulders, hips, feet, etc are still wide.

I'm 5'6 and a half and slimmed down to a 12 from a 14/16, losing 15 pounds. I look normal weight now but not slender - I had a goal of 10 stone but can see I could healthily go to 9.5 stone and lose the softly rounded tummy, get a tighter waist shape and get leaner.

So that's my new goal, and will probably make me a 10 on top and below in some shops but its more about seeing how my silhouette can get sleeker and my middle leaner and stronger than being a size. I can't change the size of my pelvic girdle or ribs or shoulders, nor the length of my legs.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/08/2013 20:29

Death - mine are a 3 and a half. I'm doomed.

DalmationDots · 30/08/2013 20:31

I am a size 12. I am 5ft 7. I look normal weight, not super skinny but not fat. I am about 10.5 stone (trying to get it down but not because I think I am overweight, more because I think 0.5-1 stone lighter I would look and feel fab rather than feeling 'OK' about my weight)

Height is a big factor. For me, I can usually fit into size 10s but they don't look flattering at all.

And tbh in shops I differ so much from size 10-14 depending on the shop sizing.

ouryve · 30/08/2013 20:32

I'm 5'4 and a 12-14 and borderline for BMI and waist measurement. I've never been less than a size 10, even when I was an underweight teenager. With a BMI of 18, I still had 35" hips. I got down to a BMI of 23, a couple of years ago - about a stone lighter than I am now - and was a size smaller. I couldn't even get jeans to fit me because my hips were down to 36" and even men's jeans were too hippy on me, since having the boys and galloping middle age have destroyed my waistline. My shape has changed so much from when I was a teen. People were telling me I looked gaunt at that weight.

I also have much bigger boobs than I had, even 11 years ago, when I was heavy, with a BMI of 29. Correcting for crap bra measuring, back then, I was a 34D (measured a 38B, wearing a 36C because it fitted me so much better!). I'm a 32FF, now!

NachoAddict · 30/08/2013 20:35

I am 5' 2 and 8st 8 a size ten/twelve nd i feel fat. I carry any extra weight on my boobs and belly which is why I feel fat even though others say I am slim. I just cant see past the mummy tummy.

Pinupgirl · 30/08/2013 20:39

There are really far too many women on here way too obsessed with their weight. I am 5'6,no idea what I weigh but am a size 16 in clothes. I am probably a couple of stone over weight but couldn't give a shit. I am trying to eat a bit healthier and I exercise a couple of times a week but I certainly don't beat myself up because Im a bit chubby. Self confidence is everything.

shockers · 30/08/2013 20:39

I'm 5' 3, size 12/14 and feel pretty good (I do quite a bit to keep healthy), until I see a photo of myself... then there's no denying that I look overweight.

absentmindeddooooodles · 30/08/2013 20:46

Depends on the shape and build. Ive been a size 12 at 10 stone. Im 5.9" . I didnt look "fat" I was healthy not over weight or underweight.

My sister is 5.1". She is a size 12 now. For her it is a little less healthy. She has quiye a small bone structure and fills out a 12 well weighing around 12 stone. She does not look fat, but is not happy with her weight and would be much happier in a 10. The issue is health. Not being thin or fat for vanity sake.

My mum on the other hand is still a 12 in teousers. Shes 5.6" and looks very slim. She has big hips ( bone structure) and there is not an ounce of fat on her. You could in no way call jer heavy or even slightly over weight.

Its all relative but I dont think a size 12 woman can ever be unhealthily fat or heavy. A little overweight maybe. But not massively.

OneWaySystemBlues · 30/08/2013 20:49

I'm 5'4, weight 8st 2lbs and have a BMI of 19.5, which is at the lower end of normal. I am a size 10-12. The interesting thing is I have weighed the same for the last 20 years and a size 10 these days is the same size as a 12 used to be 20 years ago. I know this because I could NEVER have got into a 10 20 years ago, whereas now I'm finding that 12 is sometimes too big and a 10 is fine. And my size 12 jeans from 15 years or so ago are the same size as my newer size 10 jeans!

GrandstandingBlueTit · 30/08/2013 20:50

It's easy to dismiss people as being 'way too obsessed with their weight', but actually, you have absolutely no idea whether that is the case or not.

Certainly not if purely going on the strength of this thread.

Tryharder · 30/08/2013 20:52

Stopped reading when people who are 5'9" and size 10 say they are fat.

NO YOU'RE NOT AND YOU KNOW IT!

Poppyhat · 30/08/2013 20:57

How can one persons 22inch(or whatever a 12 actually is) waist be slim and another's be fat. They still have a size 12 waist.
I agree that their weights can be very different .one may be underweight, the other over,by BMi charts. But they are still size 12.
Surely nobody thinks a size 12 is fat?
