All on Nick

Camp Fred, iCarly Shake it up and Victorious.

I don't find this appropriate viewing for a 9 year old or am I just an old fud?!

OP posts:
Pawprint · 30/08/2013 09:29

Don't know the others, but I detest iCarly. Awful, screechy kids.

propitia · 30/08/2013 09:38

yes you can pin individual channels on virgin media.

Hulababy · 30/08/2013 09:38

No not banned.
Never seen anything on them that would seem them inappropriate for pre teens bar general annoyingness.

Sure our parents for our tv pretty annoying and mind numbing too.

If it bugs you then turn it off at home instead.

thebody · 30/08/2013 09:47

my mom tried to ban grange hill and 'i dream of Jeannie, ( (yes i am old)make us watch blue Peter, fucking boring then and fucking boring now.

for my kids the only single ban has been Tracey Beaker which was vile and nasty.

in my opinion these American shows are harmless and kids live them. far far better than them watching corrie and vile Eastenders.

fluffyraggies · 30/08/2013 09:49

I've never heard of any of the programmes you're all discussing.

I'm 20 weeks preg. with DC4.

DC3 is 15.

I am light years out of date with young kids TV and am actually dreading entering the minefield which it seems to have become now :(

fluffyraggies · 30/08/2013 09:52
Grin
thebody · 30/08/2013 09:57

fluffy, its only a minefield on mumsnet 😃

loving the clangers, my dcs loved trumpton and the herbs.

mummytime · 30/08/2013 10:01

Don't panic, it seems fine to me. But my kids got bored of NickJr, aren't allowed Disney; and the crappier stuff they are liable to get Mummy discussing it with them.
But then I wouldn't ban Tracey Beaker, and let them watch the Simpsons, so maybe I'me jut a pleb.

Fakebook · 30/08/2013 10:01

I don't have sky and I refuse to have it because of this crap on these channels. I don't let my dd watch crap like Tracey beaker and My Parents are Aliens either. They say things like "shut up" and "get lost", which IMO is bad language for a 5/6 year old. Dd knows this and always turns it off when they come on.

I also hate Dickhead and Dom. I caught a clip of one of their programmes about 2 years ago in which they were just constantly pretending to be sick...even dd wasn't amused and she thankfully hates them both too now.

Quaffle · 30/08/2013 10:02

I quite like Victorious and I watch Life With Boys because I could eat the guy who plays the father for breakfast.

Dobbiesmum · 30/08/2013 10:05

Chorlton and the wheelies is popular here Grin
It's definitely only a minefield on MN fluffy.
There's a really cute video of Lucas Cruikshank (Fred) coming out floating around YouTube, Jezebel showed it last week, he seems like a proper sweetie when he's interviewed. I always think he deserves an awful lot of credit for Fred however bloody irritating it is, he developed it himself while still a teenager and it just took off.
Jessie's the one that annoys me, that girl could overact for the Olympics...

Dobbiesmum · 30/08/2013 10:07

Dick and Dom are well loved here Fakebook I have a soft spot for them as they were the first thing DS watched that made him laugh after being very poorly for weeks Smile
Da Bungalow was not much difference to Tiswas really, silly and messy but in general just fun.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 30/08/2013 10:08

It's a rite of passage to watch shoite TV at that age. I did it with Saved By The Bell, California Dreams and Clarissa Explains It All (refuse to lump Sabrina The Teenage Witch in with crap because it was brilliant Grin) Everyone does it. even the ones with parents who banned them

Youhaventseenme · 30/08/2013 10:17

Following an attitude overload DS (11) had all the Disney Channels locked down at the beginning of the holidays. After about a week I said as you haven't mithered me for Disney pick a channel and I will unlock it for an hour. He chose I bloody Carly, I went off to do something and when I came back he was back on CBBC. He declared the Disney channels screechy nonsense.

I offered him an hour yesterday and he said no thanks it is just rubbish.

Is it that difficult to teach a child of school age why Tracey Beaker speaks in a different way from what would be allowed in her own refined home? To explain that Tracey has never had a daddy and has been dumped by her mummy and doesn't know how to behave. Or simply to say briskly "well, you are not Tracey Beaker- this is the behaviour I expect of you"?

Over the years my dc heard some pretty ripe language, not so much from television as from the other parents in the playground. It didn't mean they thought I would ever accept language like that in our house.

I found Jacqueline Wilson very useful for explaining social issues. I like to think that reading her books helped dd to understand why other children might come across as different, but also to see that Tracey's behaviour doesn't actually help her much: she is somebody who continually trips herself up and paints herself into corners.

maidmarian2012 · 30/08/2013 10:18

MY GOD!! Iv just googled Dan Shneider, I feel ill. Gross. I am never allowing those channels programmes in my house, ever.

KatoPotato · 30/08/2013 10:20

DS is starting to get bored of Cbeebies. So I'm afraid that will be the end of his TV watching career then!

Dobbiesmum · 30/08/2013 10:24

Did you find anything like actual evidence MaidMarian? I could only find rumours on forums..

LookingThroughTheFog · 30/08/2013 10:25

Oh I hate these programmes and the children know not to bother asking for them when I'm in the room. On the other hand, if I can hear DS laughing until he's literally crying from another room and I go in to check that out, it will always be one of the Nick shows, or Horrible Histories. Usually a Nick show.

He watches a fair amount of stuff that's interesting, educational and whatever. I sort of feel that it's OK to mix that a little bit with appalling rubbish that makes him laugh.

In general, I do think he watches far too much TV, but that'll be easier to control again when school starts. And it's not like it's all he does by a long shot.

sunshinefrog · 30/08/2013 10:57

I can't stand the likes of iCarly, Jessie, Suite Life etc. I found that when I let my DDs watch those shows, there was a definite increase in 'backchat' and generally rude behaviour towards adult. So I banned them of those grounds.

friday16 · 30/08/2013 11:25

Why do people pay for Shite Sky and then complain they don't like it? Isn't the solution pretty obvious?

friday16 · 30/08/2013 11:28

"I would remove the tv altogether if I had my way!"

So why don't you, then? Who's stopping you?

thebody · 30/08/2013 11:32

cory makes a good point though. children do need to see that tele is tele and real life is real life.

they can't act out and behave like characters in a TV show anymore than most adults don't act like Katt Slater( some do of course)

I did ban Tracey Beaker as its unremittingly depressing and anyway going to the local comp my kids saw others lives like hers in real life. they don't need it shoved down their throats in books and TV as well.

Hulababy · 30/08/2013 12:54

I must be lucky. DD has never acted out what she's she sees on Tv with me. Never had poor behaviour as a result of a TV show. Is it really that usual for it to occur?

OnTheBottomWithAWomensWeekly · 30/08/2013 12:58

Why do feel people feel the need to ban things because they personally don't like them? I dont let my children watch stuff like that, but I don't see why my opinion should mean that nobody else can watch that shit if they choose.
