To think DH is a nob!

celebmum · 29/08/2013 09:50

'D'H said he felt like crap, fluey, sore throat, bunged up etc. As soon as he 'announced' this I bought him beechams etc to try nip it in the bud and stop it spreading to our DC. He took 2tablets over the period of a week (and only because i handed them to him with a glass of water!) and then lied about having taken more.. (he hadnt I checked the pkt Grin )
when i persisted he whinged that he doesnt like taking stuff like that/it doesnt work blah blah..
cue 1wk later and I have 3yr old DS with 39degree temp, hacking cough and barely there voice and 10m old DD boiling hot and full of snot. DH is out of the house 10hours aday so he doesnt have to look after them! Angry

He's a nob isnt he?

I don't think taking medicine actually kills a cold, surely it just helps with the symptoms. There is no cure so I don't see how it would have made any difference in your dc catching it.

Hawkmoth · 29/08/2013 09:55

They would have caught it before he started to be ill in all likelihood. Hope they pick up soon.

gamerchick · 29/08/2013 09:55

Well for not taking cold meds no.

But yes for leaving you to it.. He could help.. even if it's to pick up the slack with cooking and tidying up while you have poorly limpets. I hope it's work rather than just buggering off and helping when he gets in at least?

Hope they are on the mend and you don't come down with it yourself.

WorraLiberty · 29/08/2013 09:55

How would taking the tablets stop him spreading it to your DS?

gamerchick · 29/08/2013 09:57

It is true the meds don't kill the cold. Once it's happened there's not much you can do but to let it go by itself.

picnicbasketcase · 29/08/2013 09:57

There isn't a cure for cold/flu, so taking Beechams etc wouldn't have done any good when it comes to not passing it on to others. But he absolutely should be helping you with the poorly children.

CoteDAzur · 29/08/2013 09:57

YABU for thinking cold tablets actually cure the cold. And calling your DH a "nob" for not taking them.

RobotHamster · 29/08/2013 09:58

If only Beechams stopped colds being infectious. You're being daft.

FatimaLovesBread · 29/08/2013 09:59

Taking beechams has nothing to do with stopping the cold spreading. It's paracetamol for the fever and aches and pains and then a decongestant to relieve the bunged up feeling.
It's a pain relief not a cure, your children would have got it regardless.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 29/08/2013 10:00

YABU

and ignorant. Taking Beechams doesn't stop a cold Hmm

Hope he is helping out with the children the 14 hours he is at home.

Mia4 · 29/08/2013 10:06

For leaving you to it, he's a knob, since he was looked after it's time for him to start doing some himself when he gets in. Or take time off.

Beechams only help the symptoms of a cold-not stop or hold the cold itself so they would have caught it regardless.

Sallystyle · 29/08/2013 10:06

No, he is not a nob.

Bloody hell, people really believe that taking cold meds stop the colds spreading Hmm

whois · 29/08/2013 10:10

Bloody hell, people really believe that taking cold meds stop the colds spreading

Plenty of people have even more stupid and wacky ideas about health!

WorraLiberty · 29/08/2013 10:11

When you say, DH is out of the house 10hours aday so he doesnt have to look after them!

Do you mean he's at work?

livinginwonderland · 29/08/2013 10:19

Taking Beechams won't kill any cold bug - they'll have caught the cold before he even knew he had it.

hillyhilly · 29/08/2013 10:20

Yabu

littlewhitebag · 29/08/2013 10:21

No he isn't. He had the cold, he didn't want to take medication for the symptoms. Fair enough, his choice. DS was likely to catch the cold anyway.

DH is now at work while you manage DS who has a cold.

Welcome to the real world.

Doubtfuldaphne · 29/08/2013 10:22

How mean! It wouldn't have stopped the cold spreading to someone else at all. I don't bother with those tablets either. What's more important is rest and fluids.

Featherbag · 29/08/2013 10:23

Please tell me you don't actually believe him taking the Beechams would've made any difference at all to how long he was ill, or whether he passed it on?! You do realise colds and flu are contagious for days BEFORE symptoms develop, right? And that Beechams is just paracetamol and possibly caffeine?

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 29/08/2013 10:24

YABU

Taking medicines just eases the symptoms, if he doesn't want to take them it is only him who will suffer. Your DC will have caught it anyway.

I am guessing he is at work during the 10 hours, if so YABU to expect him to take time off to look after them when you are there.

I hope he has as much sympathy for you when you catch the cold from the children! Which you probably will do even if you give them medicine.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 29/08/2013 10:32

I'm astounded that you believe beechams would stop a cold and keep it from spreading. I guess the advertising folks at beechams are thrilled though!

Anyway yabu (and a wee bit silly) small children are carrier monkeys for all sorts of horrible bugs and sickness

mummytime · 29/08/2013 10:52

I think you need to go to NHS direct and learn a bit about the cold.

They spent years spending a lot of money looking for a cure - THERE ISN'T ONE.

Beecham's works by lowering temperature, unblocking your nose and providing pain relief. Which recommends using separate drugs for these functions, as a more cost effective solution.

To stop your children getting it (which may have been too late by the time he had symptoms), you would have had to keep them away from him 100%, and have had to clean all surfaces, preferably with bleach. Colds are spread more by shaking hands than kissing.

The "First Defence" can help at the first sign of a cold, in Adults only. You have to use from the first sniffle/sore throat.

lecce · 29/08/2013 10:53

YABU and ignorant to think that Beechams stops colds developing and, when you say he's out of the house for 10 hours a day, presumably you mean he's at work. Yes, he should do his share when he's at home, but he is hardly a 'nob' for having to go out to work, is he?

gamerchick · 29/08/2013 10:58

Ah man look at how many people goto the gps wanting antibiotics for a cold. Some people genuinely don't know. It happens.

I found out that cold and flu can enter through the eyes as well as via touch and mouth. I knew about hand to eye but not sneeze to eye.

I'm the one who does a whole turtle head into my top if somebody sneezes on the bus. [Blush]
