to wonder what my uni tutor meant?

end of first year, in a nursing degree.

So far have got all A's (but one) Blush though I do work like a dog admittedly.

My academic mentor asked me how my first essay made me feel (where I got a high B grade). I said blardy fantastic Grin. I had been out of education for nearly 20 years!

He then said something about 'perfectionist' though I cannot remember quite what. He was not being mean I think he was genuinely wondering as I think I have been coming top in stuff Blush.

I do not think I am but now I am wondering, is that how I am being perceived?

No one knows my marks anyway - they're all private. It is not as if I am bragging or anything. Heck, I have surprised myself.

Do you think it was a bit odd of him to ask? It is not like I pester him for help etc.

I think actually he asked me if I was a perfectionist - something like that anyway.

Confused...I think he was probably just complimenting you. What's wrong with being a perfectionist? If you're going to be a nurse, that's a good trait to have IMO.

RevoltingPeasant · 28/08/2013 22:09

OP firstly well done on your marks!

I'm a university lecturer and don't know what he meant, but sometimes there is a jump up from 1st to 2nd year and people who get firsts in the first year get a bit of a shock in the second. It is quite common for marks to regress a bit at the start of the second year. Perhaps he meant, don't drive yourself mad if that happens to you.

CoffeeTea103 · 28/08/2013 22:10

I think you are looking for some praise here. Why would he ever mean this in any other way than as a good way.

SilverApples · 28/08/2013 22:10

Why are you bothered? Do you usually fret over small things?

Ididabravebravething · 28/08/2013 22:10

I wasn't looking for praise. I genuinely was wondering.

Not that stuck up my own ass insecure Grin

I think as a mature student going into nursing you go in with your eyes open and a lot more life experience. You also probably 'want' it a lot more than 18-19years old (I know I was often more interested in the bar on a friday night (and many other nights).

Well done to you don't let him cast doubt on your success.

Ididabravebravething · 28/08/2013 22:12

yes revolting, perhaps that is what he meant.

I just thought it was an odd thing to say.

Maybe he knows how hard I have been working to juggle uni and the kids as we do have a chin wag when we have our meetings.

I was just curous, as to anything else :D and came on here to ask, nothing more to it than that really.

I just love the MN panel Grin

If he was meaning that I am actually a bit touched, as I do work too hard probably to do my bestest (as my dd says).

I do not need to work so hard. I somehow feel if I don't give 100% I am not giving my best and that it is not ok.

perhaps I am a bloomin perfectionist Grin

I'm a Uni lecturer as well as a postgrad student. I'm amazed at how many of my cohort and myself have had counselling due to the stress of being a erection it's hitting us during our PhDs or masters courses. Perhaps it's the same in your institution and he is trying to work out whether you are putting too much pressure on yourself. It bodes well that you are not stressing about every grade and are pleased to do well after your break from education, you sounds very well balanced :)

Ididabravebravething · 28/08/2013 22:18

thanks eight

ps, I did always wonder if erections were stressful GrinWink

Self awareness and reflection. It's not what you've done, it's how you feel about what you've done.

Don't over think it too much, you'll drive yourself around the bend :)

Ididabravebravething · 28/08/2013 22:21

we are six.......that was like my last essay Grin

infact, are you my tutor in disguise own up now or forever hold your peace did you set the essay???? Grin

OP posts:
WeAreSix · 28/08/2013 22:31

Haha no, not a tutor! Been a nurse for 13 years and did midwifery degree too so I've churned out all the reflection and self awareness which are not very important to clinical practice...

Kiwiinkits · 28/08/2013 23:13

I feel stressed at being an erection too, Eight

Kiwiinkits · 28/08/2013 23:14

There's the old saying, "C's get degrees"

(Although IMO A's get you into the best post-grad and job positions)
