To want to know if you kit your kids out with a whole new 'wardrobe' each season?

I don't, but DD's friend's mum was most surprised when I told her earlier today that I don't. She then went on to tell me that at the end of every season she totally re-stocks both her DCs wardrobes with new clothes for the coming season and gets rid of things from the previous one. She also buys them 3 or 4 pairs of shoes per season.

She was genuinely shocked when I said that I don't do this, and things get given to the charity shop/Ebayed when my kids have grown out of them and not after just 3 or 4 months' wear. She was even more shocked when I said that DD will be going back to school in September wearing - shock horror - the shoes I got her in June, as they still fit perfectly and look new.

I had to replace my 17 year olds whole pant collection last month as somehow i had just forgotten that boys become men and that bit of them also grows and it wasn't until i saw him heading for the shower in his too small pants looking like something from a porn shot that it finally twigged.

I do a twice yearly audit and pass on anything DD has grown out of to younger cousins if they are still in reasonable condition. I do keep summer clothes from year to year but she has a full new set of winter clothes every year because the previous year's are pretty much knackered.

My two have growth spurts all the time so I also do a bi-annual clothes audit. It just makes sense.

Woah op, is your friend a billionaire? What a crazy lady lolz. Seriously, in a way I'd like to as my kids look like they got dressed in the ragbag some days, but they are happy! We might get a few new things, some handmedowns, last seasons faves, some charity shop items. This year when I got my oldest a new coat I felt a pang of guilt also buying a new coat for littler sister, but we do kind of have the money, I just can't bear the waste of having a perfectly good coat lying around from last year.

I do.

awaits backlash

I have a 6yo ds who lives half the week with me and half with his dad. So I only get 1 weekend day (Sunday) and after school with him. But he still has rough clothes that I don't worry through the holidays. I also have a 2.5yo dd. she has a MASSIVE wardrobe. But it's my money, we work hard for it, and all other bills are paid.

I pass it down to friends (we rarely get given anything) and if others but second hand then someone has to buy it first ;)

Uniform was done by the end of July. Ds is back to cool on tues. currently building up dds winter wardrobe. Ds has new winter coat already which I got in the sale last yr. they both need new winter shoes too.

I enjoy spending money on their clothes. It's not on credit so what's the issue?

My kids just didn't grow, and even their growth spurts haven't been that big, yet they end up taller than avg so how does that work? Confused If I bought something toddler sized now for winter, iffy whether my tots would grow enough to wear it before next summer.

Neighbour has a barely 10yo who is about 5'2", I'll credit her for outgrowing stuff fast.

I'm glad there are daft people like the OP around though, as it means there are always barely worn bargains to be found whn I have a mooch in the charity shops Grin

RockMummy · 29/08/2013 18:41

Much to DH's disgust DS (nearly 10) loves clothes so takes a fancy to things every now and again. If it's useful I buy it .I enjoy him developing his own style too. Not forgetting replacing the trousers with constant holes and those which flap unstylishly round the ankles! So I guess I am half way between the OP's friend and the other posters in this thread.

FreudiansSlipper · 29/08/2013 18:52

no of course not

ds gets new clothes when he needs them

i do not like to see styled or very fashionable children

olibeansmummy · 29/08/2013 19:40

That's an interesting comment FreudianSlipper. Ds is just 4 and is incredibly stylish. This hasn't come from me or dh it's just how he is. He chooses all his own clothes and always matches perfectly even down to the shoes and hats. Should I try to make him dress scruffily just so it looks like he doesn't care? Because he would care a lot and it wouldn't be worth the arguments!

I buy for ds when he needs it but so put summer clothes away or get rid of them at the end if summer and he usually needs new winter stuff by then. His summer stuff from this year has done him 2 summers and a Christmas holiday in Australia, but I've just bought him new winter clothes today and yes, for him shopping is a fun experience Confused

Clothes happen as and when. There's no real science to it. The toddler fell in love with a tee shirt in the supermarket this week, so he got that. I bought jeans for the ten year old last month because they were reduced and she likes that style. Middling spawn hasn't had much recently, but he'll probably hit h&m at some point and find a new jumper. I don't do seasonal shopping as I can't be bothered dedicating a weekend to kitting out three kids. Not my idea of fun at all.
