We have two threads in active convos tonight:

  1. asking for details about your pets and
  2. asking what was number 1 on the date you were born

This is probably a coincidence and harmless, but remember to be careful about specific personal info you give out on the internet everyone.

Stay safe out there Smile

LEMisdisappointed · 27/08/2013 22:02
Confused
NickNacks · 27/08/2013 22:03

It's often password details/security questions.

AFishWithoutABicycle · 27/08/2013 22:03

Yes interesting.. Glad I didn't post.

JaquelineHyde · 27/08/2013 22:03

Pets names are very commonly used as passwords/memorable words or one of those security questions some sites use.

BOF · 27/08/2013 22:04

Shall I make it a round three and ask people what their mother's maiden name was?

CatThiefKeith · 27/08/2013 22:04

God I am so naive sometimes! :(

YourHandInMyHand · 27/08/2013 22:07

Yep I saw those 2 and swerved them too. Way too much personal info there!

lunar1 · 27/08/2013 22:08

I never thought of that, thanks mintyy

MarcelineTheVampireQueen · 27/08/2013 22:09

I swear I saw a Maiden Name one once BOF

There are always threads on here looking for personal info. Then again, though I name change, I am identifiable by my posts. Though hopefully nothing that would help someone get into my bank account (they would find fuck all tbh)

AmazingBouncingFerret · 27/08/2013 22:09

BOF you do maiden name, I'll do town you grew up in.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 27/08/2013 22:09

Mothers maiden name - Gosling
DOB - 21 Dec 1978
Pet - Guinea Pigs - Rum & coke.

... and?

Beastofburden · 27/08/2013 22:09

Have you told MNHq?

JoinYourPlayfellows · 27/08/2013 22:09

Oh, good call, Mintyy :)

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 27/08/2013 22:11

Yup... I swerved too.

Any would be hackers beware: my passwords are not my pet names or date of birth they're much easier to work out than that

Hassled · 27/08/2013 22:14

The level of specific personal information people a) ask for and b) are prepared to give baffles the hell out of me on a regular basis.

Thanks, Capt Frank.

londonrach · 27/08/2013 22:17

Doesnt everyone use a mixture of letters and numbers that mean nothing to you for passwords. We have to change passwords at work once a month. Very confusing....

ImperialBlether · 27/08/2013 22:17

But... but... you would ALSO need:

A person's name
Bank account number
Maybe a sort code
The number written on the back of the card

These things are not insignificant!

Wereonourway · 27/08/2013 22:19

Hhmmmm, do you think it's actually a ploy??

I'm 99% certain no one would ever guess my passwords for anything. They're quite random

My date of birth could be found by doing a search on net couldn't it? Like a stranger could get my birth certificate?

Actually the only one that would worry me would be banking and a) there's nowt in bank ever anyway and b) my bank has triple super duper security that I sometimes can't breach.

Mintyy · 27/08/2013 22:19

I wasn't thinking particularly about bank accounts.

Fine, if you want to share and aren't concerned, share away to your heart's content.

RevoltingPeasant · 27/08/2013 22:21

Blather no, you wouldn't necessarily - my DM leaves her iPad with her bank customer number saved on it so she can log in quickly any time. So if you got to the password screen and "forgot" it you could then use those types of details to to swerve the password requirement.

RevoltingPeasant · 27/08/2013 22:21

But this is the point, lots of sites will let you on without a password if you answer the security Qs!

BOF · 27/08/2013 22:22

I suppose it could possibly be that somebody knows an MNer's real identity and is hoping to lure them onto the thread...

Then again, I have no idea- I haven't seen the threads, could be kosher.
