to think a 4yr old shouldn't have BO?

My 4 yr old DS has really bad B.O, I bath him every other day and he gets a strip wash every morning but yet come lunchtime he really does smell, is there anything else I can do?

I'm not keen on bathing him everyday as he has eczema and daily bathing dries his skin out.

He starts full time school next week and worried as I know children can be cruel and I don't want him picked on because he smells.

He is a very active child but surely 4yrs is too young for deodorant?

OP if worried about bathing him every day look up the soapy cauldron and their oat/honey bee shower mousse it's fab!!

Apparently one of the lesser known causes can be an allergy to dairy! My friend is having this issue with her 4yr old son.

My dd1 (4) has this sometimes. I think it is a combination of hormones, specific food she has eaten and sometimes not enough to drink. She also has eczema so I only wash her pits with Dove-type soap. I bought her a Tom's of Maine unscented deodorant recently which is non-antiperspirant and aluminium free.

Thanks will check them out (she doesn't need anti-perspirant, just something to freshen things up).

FreakoidOrganisoid · 27/08/2013 17:28

Dd has had bo since she was 3 despite baths and clean clothes daily. Crystal sticks etc didn't work for her, she needs an anti perspirant Sad

Gp just said wash thoroughly and use antiperspirant.

Dairy definitely makes it worse but she has been tested and isn't intolerant.

I never understand comments like ' but he's 4 so you can't use deoderent' or 'oh she's 7 she can't shave her legs'

yes if the 4 year old smells and its obvious then yes it's your job as a parent to solve it. if your dd has black hairy legs that cause her to be teased or upset then solve it. that's your job as a parent.

good luck op and think you are quite right in sorting this problem out before school begins.

My DS (6) went through a phase of this in the spring, I used a crystal stick from Holland and Barrett on him and that solved it, but interestingly he came down with chicken pox a couple of weeks after it started, and once the chicken pox cleared, so did the BO! All through the hot summer weather he's not been whiffy at all and we've stopped bothering with the stick for now.

I completely agree, if he needs deodorant then let him use it! If he needed age 7 clothes age 4 people would buy the age 7 clothes, not leave him stuck in age 4 that were tiny on him! Although I also second taking him to the GP for a check up too.

Edendance · 27/08/2013 19:04

Be wary of the con that is crystal sticks! I once had a 'all natural' deoderant bar thing and it did nothing. I'm a very non smelly person but it was shit. Just get down the supermarket and pick up a sensitive non scented mens deoderant roll on thingy. Job done.

valiumredhead · 27/08/2013 19:35

No issue with deodorant for a 4 year old, my surprise was at saying it was fine to use anti perspirent.

thismumismad · 27/08/2013 21:34

Crystal deodorants are fantastic. They stop the bacteria that cause the smells. Try to find some handmade soap for his armpits, as a good one will not be drying and is in fact very beneficial for the skin. I started to make my own soap as I was having trouble finding products that would not upset my psoriasis. Just three weeks after changing what I used, my skin cleared up completely.
