judgey much?

It reads like a clip from the daily mail - actually, it probably is!

Now there are people, i have a friend who can make an amazing meal out of apparently nothing (she is italian though!) in ten minutes flat - although she has lots of those ingredients that are expensive to buy in the first place but go a long way,i would never know what to do with them!

I am such a boring cook, i have a small repertoire (sp) of meals that i cook - over and over again, the ingredients in my cupboard are basic because i can't afford capers and porcinni mushrooms etc. I rarely fall back on ready meals and feed my family healthily. But its boring really and i can understand why some people use ready meals - time, money - So yeah, making your own pizza will be cheaper than dominos or tesco fineset but it is not going to be cheaper than icelands £1 pizza is it? Not from scratch, not from the start - yes if you divide the amount of pizzas your flour, cheese, tomato sauce and anything else you want to put on it by 20 it might be cheaper but those ingredients have to be bought in the first place.

See, I would welcome cheap and easy ways to make my meals more exciting and thankfully we are not on the breadline this month, but im not going to watch that smug little bastard telling me how i can just knock out some pucker tucker out of a packet of anchovies and dust from the cupboard!

I have always thought him a smug twat - this confirms it!

this is a UK wide study and shows low income = higher chance of obesity in children.

LEMisdisappointed · 28/08/2013 10:07

I have been on the waiting list for an allotment for three years - however, i am under no illusion that this will be an economical venture.

my tomatoes in my garden are not ripening either, though that is because DP planted them where there is no sun - will they just go off?

So do we all think that it is just poor people who have bad diets? Do those with some extra cash never get pizza or go to McDonald's or get a ready meal? There are some huge assumptions and use of stereotypes on here.

And let's just point out that for all his campaigning, childhood obesity has not slowed down, but continues to increase.

Weight is a really complex issue and food is just one small part of it. If kids grow up where there aren't parks to play out, or it Isn't safe, or the

mignonette · 28/08/2013 10:31

I have already got that study Faster. The demographic will change. That is what worldwide studies are suggesting/even showing. Alcohol consumption also plays a part w/ its hidden calories and as is widely publicised, that certainly ranges across the social classes although I suspect the middles are in more denial wink]...

mignonette · 28/08/2013 10:32

Bloody hell, I need to learn to Wink properly.

kickassangel · 28/08/2013 10:34

... Or the older ones take younger ones home then they stay home til parents get in from work, then exercise is boun to be part of the issue. How many times will they go to clubs and activities that cost a lot?

People seem to be ignoring the lives of the working poor who don't have time or money to live the ideal lifestyle.

These issues are not new. JO market is actually the smug mc who have time and money to sit and watch his shows then buy his books and try out his recipes.

He would do more to lower childhood obesity by giving some of his billions away instead of adding to his immense wealth by preaching to the converted

twistyfeet · 28/08/2013 10:35

my tomatoes are in full sun but not under glass. Maybe I will play marbles with the non ripe bastards.

Perhaps if he is trying to drum up publicity for his book, he ought to stick to talking about the book. I used to like him, sort of, and now I'm not very impressed at all.

Trigglesx · 28/08/2013 10:41

I think it's a bit rich for someone who has an estimated worth of £150 million (from today's article) making snarky comments about the poor and their style of living.

mignonette · 28/08/2013 10:42

Using BMI is flawed. What adjustments are made for children w/ high muscle mass? My son at 14 would have been classed as overweight using BMI because he was a rugby player, expert drummer and solid (heavy) muscle. My DH being an ex ballet dancer (do not laugh, pre RMN days) and now a builder is solid, solid muscle and weighs heavy for the acceptable range. Yet he is super super fit. Neither are tall men.

Interesting differences between boys and girls makes me wonder what (if any) influence the media has upon pre and pubescent girls to conform to the acceptable body size. Also as I can attest personally from working w/ teenagers, thinness does nor necessarily equate w/ health and restrictive diets lay all kinds of nasties in wait for them as they age.

Trigglesx · 28/08/2013 10:45

Also from the article:

I'm embarrassed to look at British kids. You get their mummies phoning up and saying: "He's too tired, you're working him too hard" ? even the butch ones.

even the "butch ones" ?? WTF?

On himself ?Sometimes I think of myself as a chef, but really I am a professional s* stirrer.?

Well, that explains a lot. Hmm

mignonette · 28/08/2013 10:50

He was only a line cook at River Cafe when he was starspotted by TV. Anthony Bourdain used to rip into him. Now he does not.

Let's see what kind of a parent you are JO when your adult offspring start doing the nepotistic kind of careers children of the famous now gravitate towards. Wonder how hard they will have to 'work' to land that parent assisted place in modelling/acting/cooking/party goer/little shop selling naice things...

kickassangel · 28/08/2013 10:52

And when talking about his wealth, lets not forget that as well as his personal wealth, he also owns or runs companies worth billions, so does have access to more income that many of us will see in a lifetime

limitedperiodonly · 28/08/2013 11:17

He flogs kitchen gadgets too. Anyone remember the <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.cookware-online.co.uk/images/product/main/jo_flavour_shaker.jpg&imgrefurl=www.cookware-online.co.uk/shop/kitchen-utensils-tools-and-gadgets/jamie-oliver-tools/product-377188.html&h=450&w=344&sz=21&tbnid=m6eg9lUM_7uQ5M:&tbnh=90&tbnw=69&zoom=1&usg=___jB0KG4uP-orwffWL-eFGVsYyTU=&docid=8RMTcCsRoqRq1M&sa=X&ei=Ks0dUvmIGeSY0QXI-YHoDQ&ved=0CG8Q9QEwBQ&dur=4631" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Flavour Shaker? Which to the thrifty among us is a fucking jam jar.

fromparistoberlin · 28/08/2013 12:32

mignonette

what a vitriolic post, you might not like him (its a free country) but dont fucking start on kis kids

sheesh, read that post makes you sound really fucking bitter

mignonette · 28/08/2013 13:03

No not bitter just have a highly tuned hypocrisy antenna. And the post is directed towards the no doubt nepotistic careers they will have. Not what they do as small children.

My children are very successful and happy individuals so I do not perceive it necessarily as at their expense. So no ,not bitter but I am aware of and do my best to help my patients and their families overcome the dice that are heavily loaded against them. And I have perseverance unlike JO who has dropped various campaigns for whatever reason- 28 years of perseverance.

Finally he is waffling on again last night in criticism of women who drink today and who are Mothers. So do you drink Fromp? Are you a parent? Because if the answer to both of those is yes, JO thinks you lack willpower, are less fit and less of an amazing Mother.
Nice.

PoppyAmex · 28/08/2013 13:13

"Finally he is waffling on again last night in criticism of women who drink today and who are Mothers. So do you drink Fromp? Are you a parent? Because if the answer to both of those is yes, JO thinks you lack willpower, are less fit and less of an amazing Mother. Nice."

That's not what I read at all. Link please?

FasterStronger · 28/08/2013 13:14

can you quote what he said?

PoppyAmex · 28/08/2013 13:15

In the interview with Good Housekeeping, the father-of-four, also spoke about his marriage and his wife's desire for a fifth child.

He said: "Jools and I have been together for nearly 20 years. I don't want people to think it's this heavenly, perfect thing. Of course we fight. But the truth is, we are really happy.

"I love her to bits. She is amazing and the best mum in the world. She is so healthy. She is fit, she has willpower and never drinks any alcohol. I have tried to get her drunk so many times."

He added: "Jools would love another baby. I don't know if I can handle it, but she is the boss. Whatever she wants, she will get."

Nowhere does he criticise mothers or mothers who drink Hmm

ubik · 28/08/2013 13:16

There is a nine year waiting list for our local allotment

cory · 28/08/2013 13:17

You do sometimes hear that "previous generations cooked because there weren't any cheap substitutes".

The truth is that some people in earlier generations cooked. Some, like my MIL (in the sixties) fed her family on spam and smash and tinned peas because she had never really learnt to cook. Tinned meals of dubious quality were around since at least WWII.

The generation before that, we are in The Road to Wigan Pier territory- white bread and dripping and sugared tea. In fact, George Orwell is a very good starting point for any discussion of the psychology behind a rotten diet.

And even in the 19th century, if you read Dickens Victorian, London is not full of happy housewives carefully measuring out the right quantities of their Christmas pudding a la Mrs Cratchit. Plenty of the poor depend on pie shops- and you never knew what went into those pies. Adulterated ready-made food was a massive problem in the 19th century. Large proportion of 19th century urban dwellers did not cook at home because they had no cooking facilities and could not afford the fuel: if they wanted hot food, they had to buy a ready meal.

Arisbottle · 28/08/2013 13:18

I don't think he was criticising women who drink, he did write off every young person in Britian.

He is, by his own admission, a professional shit stirrer, like Katie Hopkins but with less charm and brains!

PoppyAmex · 28/08/2013 13:19

"like Katie Hopkins but with less charm and brains"

Katie Hopkins has charm? Bloody hell.

Darkesteyes · 28/08/2013 13:20
