AIBU?

"they ate fast food and junk food but had splashed out of a plasma TV."

This comment just came up on the radio news, supposedly said by Jamie Oliver about one of the families he was working with in his new TV show.

AIBU to wonder how the fuck what you eat relates to what TV you have?

Surely this just reinforces stereotypes of the people likely to have bad diets through lack of education on the matter? What a bullshit statement.

Agree with youthecat about nice pasta sauce. Apart from the bloody pulses. Seriously, why do people always say 'put pulses in it to bulk it out'? Pulses are the devil's food: if I'd been raised on a diet of chicken nuggets and McDonald's, and somebody tried to feed me lentils I'd probably deck them, then run back to Chicken Cottage and hide there gibbering.

A tin of tomatoes with an onion, is basically tomato and onions. It is not a sauce.

You may be able to eat it and enjoy it, but it is not a comparison.

But Ministry of Food isn't that great - most of the recipes are still complex, with lots of talk of organic and ethicly reared meat, sea salt etc. Way above the budget of many people.

Delia has a book called frugal foods, which is quite old but fantastic. If she could update it and rerelease it in a non-patronising way it would be good.

Maybe he should have given his ministry of food book away for free then.

I mean for the 20 quid it costs you could buy a whole heap of lentils and tinned tomatoes.

Ive never watched his shows so have no idea if hes sanctimonious or not, but he certainly hasnt abandoned Fifteen at least I do know that. i think he means well. If people find him annoying why are they watching him? Hes never annoyed me because Ive never watched him (no tv!)

@alma - what is it about lentils that makes you heave? It doesn't have to be lentils - any pulse would do. Baked beans can be used to similar ends - not as healthy but can certainly be a cheap way of getting protein.

Pasta eaten all the time is not nutritious, why does everyone say you can make a cheap pasta sauce as if this is the height of good healthy food? What is nutritious is high quality meat/fish (eggs good substitute) and high quality vegetables and these are extremely expensive in this country. My husband comes from a supposedly (well, they are) very poor country and they laugh at the prices in the supermarkets here- £2 for 2 courgettes or whatever. Eating vegetables and decent non-hormone filled meat or good quality vegetable protein is not cheap.

I never understand why people use the excuse of not having had home ec lessons at school. I didn't, I wasn't taught to cook either, but there are plenty of free recipes on the net that explain step by step.

Not talking bernaise sauce which is more tricky, but anyone can follow a recipe for a flipping spag bol or fish pie! Even if they've never picked up a kitchen knife before

Ah Jubbly Oliver such good intentions but what a patronising way.

Want I'd there to be for us all to watch on our (plasma) TVs is a programme where Jamie and his family (or possibly Bono and Jamie on their island) live for a least a month, two preferably, on a low income.

They'd recieve their budget and out of it he has to pay rent/bills, travel expense and have and entertain his family, keep everyone happy. He'd also have to ensure that his family eat well as his keeps telling everyone to, fresh food only and there be no waste.

When he does that, then I'm prepared to acknowledge that his information is acceptable.

I am not saying its an excuse, what I am saying though is that its a chance to educate. No-one is going to be able to live on cherry scones!

Im standing by my napoli sauce - even if I have no onion its still delicious! I also agree about the pulses - they have their place in chili but not pasta sauce!

Shade of violet - maybe I'm falling fall of what I mentioned earlier but I find the Ministry of Food recipes really simple.
As for free recipes the BBC Good Food website is full of them.

There's nothing fake about his accent. He grew up in a pub in Essex and his parents speak just like he does.

And he was in the remedial stream at school - dyslexia? Which is why he started the 15 scheme.

So he's made money. Good luck to him.

It's surely about convenience too? I have 2 small boys & PND and there are days when I'm just too tired/low to cook from scratch. DH doesn't cook so on those days we eat 'junk'. I know it's not ideal.

Also decent fruit & veg isn't cheap.

He probably doesn't truly understand the problems that some people face, how can he properly empathise with people in poverty when he is worth millions?

But at least he cares, which is a lot more than the majority of millionaires do.

Being wealthy can have it's problems as well, but we don't expect people who are poor to be able to understand or care about that.

I think it's really unfair that he's receiving this much criticism. He's been getting it for years and he could easily have decided not to bother so he could concentrate on increasing his millions in another way that wouldn't leave him open to such hostility.

Makes me want to watch him and see what the fuss is about!

15 does make him money, but it could probably make him more money if he didn't invest so much in training young people and he just relied on people who had been trained and qualified elsewhere.

He grew up 2 minutes down the road from me. No-one I know speaks like that. We are talking North Essex, close to the Cambridgeshire border, not deepest Romford.
