To wonder why some things are unequivocally accepted as facts on MN whilst facts are sometimes rejected as lies

Just wondering why some facts are accepted without question, such as abuse or mental health problems whilst other things (yes I am referring to the thread where the OP as been brandished a liar because her child is at school in August- in Scotland) are rejected as lies even when they are factually correct and can be verified with a quick google search?

I completely understand that in most instances, people deserve the benefit of any doubt but I just don't get why some facts are accepted and others aren't?

I've not seen the thread you refer to but I would have thought everyone knew the Scottish schools went back earlier Confused

Are you only referring to that or is there other 'facts' you see discredited?

Bearbehind · 26/08/2013 21:47

It's not so much the discredited facts I am referring to as the ones that are accepted without question and completely influence the responses, but that thread has made me think about it more.

I was wondering something similar myself today.
It is interesting how so many things are just believed and taken at face value. The OP side of the story is not questioned.
I was reading some thread about a DP unfaithful/untrustworthy or something along those lines and I was wondering what the DP side if the story would sound like?
Or the MIL/SIL side of a story for that matter! Grin
I suppose things have to be taken at face value or the concept of a anonymous forum wouldn't work.

gordyslovesheep · 26/08/2013 21:50

but I think by 'on MN' you actually mean 'by some posters on MN' I post on MN - I didn't disbelieve anything - didn't see the thread

Bearbehind · 26/08/2013 21:55

Yes, gordy I do mean some posters, not everyone, sorry.

That's my point though smartie why on earth would some people completely accept one side of a story in most instances yet a poster is discredited on the basis of a completely verifiable fact, ie today is not a Scottish bank holiday and is a school day in Scotland in other instances??

Yes, I always wonder about the MIL's point of view. I have 3 boys so I'm very likely to feature in a MN MIL story at some point in the next 15 years or so.

I'm always aware there is another side. Isn't everyone? Of course the Op's going to write from her angle whether she is right or not.

Lazyjaney · 26/08/2013 22:00

I'm always amazed at the number of people who take the OPs version as the gospel truth, it's most likely if it conforms to MN tropes (ditto mostnlikely to be rejected = those that don't)

LittleBearPad · 26/08/2013 22:12

It's extraordinary how many people don't RTFT though and keep pointing out the same issues (eg bank holidays in countries other than the one they live in.

trixymalixy · 26/08/2013 22:12

Which thread?

LadyBeagleEyes · 26/08/2013 22:18

Don't know what thread your'e talking about but the Scottish hiliday ones always bug me.
It happens every year.
I also get mildly irritated when posters put my child is in year 2, 3, 4 etc the Scottish system is so different and I can never work out what age they are.

I RTFT thank you littlebearpad, I just could not believe how many people continued to say OP was lying, despite the facts.

OP posts:
LittleBearPad · 27/08/2013 16:41

I know you did. I was posting to agree with you. I was talking about all the people who kept saying it was a bank holiday despite it being stated pretty early on that the OP was in Scotland and it wasn't a bh there. Sorry if this wasn't clear.

Bearbehind · 27/08/2013 20:33

Blush sorry littlebearpad, I thought you meant I should RTFT!
