whilst the mother was browsing the sale rail? went shopping in a pet store & parked outside was a car with two young children strapped in their car seats screaming for their mother. the window was open but it was a hot dayso as i entered the shop i said (in a loud voice than shouting) that i couldnt believe soneone would leave young children screaming in a car whilst shopping to which a young woman glared at me & continued shopping.about 10 mins later she left the store & got in hercar & drove off.

i know its not on a scale of neglect some dc are subjected to but it didnt sit right with me.

if i need to shop i will take all dc with me.

Well it's a good thing you did something. She could have come out of the store half an hour later to her children sweating and unconscious and possibly unable to be revived.

I'd have rang the polic, hopefully would have frightened her and they may have involved SS although i doubt it.

You at least tried to help those children, although given she carried on shopping regardless it shows the type of parent she is and you couldnt change that.

YWNBU at all.
I'd have mentioned calling the police if no one claimed the children.

SirChenjin · 26/08/2013 12:06

YWNBU - good for you for doing something about it.

Think I would have probably followed up with a phone call to the police after a couple of minutes as others have said, but then hindsight is wonderful. Who the hell leaves young children for that long in a car on a hot summer's day??

GangstersLoveToDance · 26/08/2013 12:12

YABU. Going into a shop that the driver may or may not be in and shouting was a ridiculous thing to do.

You should have waited next to the car for a max of two minutes then called the police.

inneedofsomehelpplz · 26/08/2013 12:54

erm, it was the only shop at the back of an estate with its own car park. browsing sale items would not be what i would be doing leaving my dc screaming in the car. wasnt you was it gangster?

I agree that you might have got better results from handling it in a calmer way - she may have been shamed by your approach, but ultimately her continued shopping may have been an attempt to avoid drawing attention to herself after you shouted. I think the suggestions upthread about how to deal with such a situation are apposite but doing something is always better than doing nothing.
