To bleach cotton sofa covers...maybe with ordinary household bleach even?

They are terracotta. I'd like them to bleach out to a more pinky tone.

I won the sofa for 20 quid, its lovely Its cream covers work nicely with my colour scheme. The terracotta don't!

I'm thinking of swilling them round the bath, soaking a bit etc...

Iknow it will weaken the fabric. I'm willing to risk it I think? Eventually I'll get some new covers made...right now though, I'm a bit broke!

Thanks all. :) very much!

It might be better if you use value thin bleach? Try the weakest solution first?

Let us know how you get on!

Feminine · 25/08/2013 17:55

Yes, okay... Good idea. Thanks

I've been known to bleach all manor of things, some very successfully others not so much.
Make sure you rinse and rinse and rinse some more once you are done.
I second start out with a weak solution and build up the next time.

why not get a couple of cream throws from ikea

guiltyconscience · 25/08/2013 18:23

This has disaster written all over it lol! But the very best of luck op!

FirmYoungCarrot · 25/08/2013 18:28

I love doing this kind of stuff - 50% of time it's a disaster, 30% of time it's okay if I squint. 20% of time it's fab. But I never regret it because its fun and even a disaster is living with something you're not keen on and wondering what might happen if...

Do it OP! Please let us know how it goes.

As a word of warning though my bleaching is the least successful.

You can buy a pre-dye (Dylon) which removes colour from fabric.

Feminine · 25/08/2013 18:57

Interesting...the Ikea ones ...don't they have to be for one of their sofas?

If they don't have a cover to fit mine (check in a bit) then I will do it.

When the children go back.

That pre-dye also sounds promising...

Thanks for the help :)

a throw is a throw and just covers over the covers in terracotta- I have a cream throw I think I got for about a tenner from ikea and it covers over a patterned sofa I have that I got for £3 plus tax

Justforlaughs · 25/08/2013 20:04

I've bleached many things from towels to t-shirts but would normally dye over top afterwards.

Feminine · 25/08/2013 20:11

Throws never worked out for me. My kids slide all over them and knock them off! I would have to stare at the terracotta.. ;-)

The pre dye stuff stinks to high heaven, I used it once, never again.
