DP says i was wrong and the neighbours will think i am barking!

I'll tell you what is barking - throwing perfectly good, practically new crockery into the skip, thats what! So i rescued some really nice mugs - we need new mugs. There was other stuff too but they had dumped a sofa on top of it so i couldnt get to it without shifting things around.

My neighbour did walk past but didn't say anything, although shes the type to talk one day and not the next :)

YANBU
Have him help you shift that sofa

TheBookofRuth · 24/08/2013 21:55

You're not wrong, you're just a Womble. Nowt wrong with that.

PoppyWearer · 24/08/2013 21:56

YANBU.

Justforlaughs · 24/08/2013 21:58

YANBU providing the neighbours doesn't mind you taking things out of their skip - it is still classed a stealing legally, so they COULD prosecute. I doubt that they would, but be careful.

NomDeOrdinateur · 24/08/2013 21:58

YANBU at all, although Kirstie would say you should've asked first Wink.

picnicbasketcase · 24/08/2013 21:59

I hate the idea of people chucking stuff in a skip that is still perfectly useable, why don't folk freecycle or charity shop it rather than binning it?

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 24/08/2013 22:11

I'm guilty of throwing stuff out that could or should be freecycled. It's laziness because local charity stops are on busy road with no parking, I can't be arsed holding onto stuff and fending off tons of emails until someone turns up to relieve me of my goods and as someone who struggles to declutter when I decide it's time to chuck something, it had to be done there and then!

I am currently tripping over bags of baby clothes that I should have taken to the charity shop weeks ago!

RiceBurner · 24/08/2013 22:12

YANBU.

But note what Justforlaughs said ... ie be careful taking stuff out of someone else's skip, or from in front of their house, cos I was once warned by patrolling police that it was techincally theft to take (clearly abandoned, & perfectly good) stuff which was dumped on a pavement by a wheelie bin, after a house of students had just moved out.

Best option (for you) would have been to ask neighbours (nicely) if you could take some things out of their skip? I have done this (once) and been told ... "please help yourself".

Re-using an (unwanted) item is vastly superior to recycling it or sending to landfill, so, if anyone criticises, please tell them that you are an eco-warrior!

Remember though, I'm a womble Grin I can feel a namechange coming on!

Yanbu. Best to ask first though really, just to be polite, but I'm sure nobody would mind.

ILetHim - they're not boys aged 1+ clothes are they I could gladly relieve you of them! Grin

Ireallymustbemad · 24/08/2013 22:51

I'm with your DH I'm sorry. It's not your stuff to help yourself to, you should have asked if you really wanted it. A bit weird, would you help yourself to their bin??

TheBookofRuth · 24/08/2013 22:58
Grin

My mum is known to DD as Grandma Womble because of her policy of, er, proactive recycling.

LEMisdisappointed · 25/08/2013 09:22

"Would you help yourself to thier bin?" Of course if they were throwing away perfectly good stuff:) I might have another rummage later

MisselthwaiteManor · 25/08/2013 09:50

YANBU especially if she saw you doing it and didn't tell you to piss off.

LEMisdisappointed · 25/08/2013 18:58

I had another rummage - i managed to get the rest of the crockery set - so thts a full dinner set then, four plates, pasta bowls, four mugs, naice wine glass and two big christmas style plates - I am very chuffed, and desperate to find out what else is in there but i can't see without shifting things about and that would be rude!

The house was/is a rental and i wonder if the landlords/new owners are doing the place up after tennants - stuff was brand new though and all matching Grin
