To Object to Asda Displaying its unhealthiest produce at it's entrance and exits

I have 3 local Asda stores and have noticed that over the last few months the stores entrances and exits have become clogged with cakes pastries biscuits sweets etc.

And whatever happened to the banishment of sweet stuff at the check out?
Shouldn't stores take some responsibility for trying to promote healthy eating? No wonder we are all getting fatter.

Here's a novel idea. Why don't people take responsibility for what they buy and eat?

Then no-one can blame the supermarket for them getting fatter...

ddubsgirl · 22/08/2013 18:21

Ahh sorry read it wrong I work counters but not bakery often see them going off to arrange the displays and do the counts it's a right pita!!!

TheFantasticFixit · 22/08/2013 18:23

Shop online. Saves a multitude of temptation!

livinginwonderland · 22/08/2013 18:26

ddubs I work counters at ASDA too :)

cantspel · 22/08/2013 18:26

If you can manage to walk past the displays of loo roll and comfort conditioner then i am sure you are just as capable of walking past some multi packs of cupcakes and buns.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 22/08/2013 18:30

I don't think it matters where these products are situated.

StElmo · 22/08/2013 21:47

All the supermarkets do this and also have loads of baskets of '£1' sweets and chocolate dotted about and near the tills for impulse buying. There's often big displays of large bottles of fizzy pop near the doors (Sainsburys do this a lot) they do this so that, when customers want to buy some, they have to go and get a trolley and therefore will possibly stay longer and buy more. Costco have all of their most expensive and most attractive products at the front and all fresh produce, household items, sundries at the back so you have to walk through the warehouse. It's about making money, not making people fat Smile you can buy it or not.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 22/08/2013 21:51

They put fruit very close to the entrance at ours.

I know this because I am one of those parents who lets DS scoff blueberries that we haven't paid for yet. If I shop quickly I can usually make the blueberries keep him quiet for the entire shop. If not, I can find fruitshoots even if they're not at the front door Grin

jacks365 · 22/08/2013 21:58

You'd appreciate my asda. I go in downstairs which is all non food then go up in the lift and straight into the fruit and vegetables so I miss those displays. Saves me a fortune.

Pigsmummy · 22/08/2013 22:22

Have you only just realised this or is it a slow news day in your world?

Funghoul · 22/08/2013 22:35

Ours has all the marked down kids clothes then the cakes, shopping is now a minefield!

Abofdoncaster are you really from Doncaster?

chateauferret · 24/08/2013 10:16

U. When I go into a supermarket I want to get crisps, coke, cream cakes, chocolate and biscuits with minimum effort so that I can get back to my couch and veg out.

Chance would be a find thing :-)

fuzzpig · 24/08/2013 10:25

I was flicking through a 'healthy eating for kids' type book (about 4 years old at a guess) the other day, and it had a whole chapter on surviving shopping with children. There was a bit about checkout displays having sweets and interestingly it said that Asda had recently agreed to remove sweets etc from checkouts and replace with healthy food.

I don't know if they ever did that or not but it's certainly not the case now. Whereas our local Tescos have no food at all at the checkout - something I actually hadn't even registered until I actually thought about it.

neunundneunzigluftballons · 24/08/2013 10:29

Yanbu I am watching the series the ' men who are making us fat' at the moment and it is a real eye opener. The first world is in the grip of an obesity epidemic it is a serious public health issue and it needs to be addressed. It is not as simple as saying people need to take responsibility although obviously that is a huge part of it but marketing is having serious consequences. The marketing practices like special offers on this type of what are essentially junk are successfully leading to people buying and eating more so this should be looked at. This issue is not going away and is going to cost our health system a fortune so something should be done.

ilovesooty · 24/08/2013 10:31

How much nannying do shoppers need?

complexnumber · 24/08/2013 10:41

I at Asda quite a few years ago, queuing behind a mother and (guessing) a 4 year old girl sitting in the trolley. The girl waited until her mum wasn't looking, then reached over to the sweeties, pulled out a box of tic tacs, opened them and shook them into her mouth. She then replaced the box and looked all innocent.

I was Shock, but also a bit Grin

fuzzpig · 24/08/2013 10:50

neun, where are you watching the series? I think I missed it on iplayer.

fatlazymummy · 24/08/2013 10:50

So what if the sweets are at the checkout. Just say 'no' FFS. It really isn't that difficult. Just like it isn't that difficult to walk past the multi packs of fun size mars bars, the doughnuts, the pringles and the alcohol.
All this stuff about advertising amd marketing has been common knowledge for donkeys years.

RobotHamster · 24/08/2013 10:54

Yep,you all need to watch The men who made us fat (on iplayer) if you really think you're making your own decisions about food. Companies spend millions on advertising and product placement, and you have to be very aware of it all the time to consciously be able to avoid it.

fuzzpig · 24/08/2013 11:07

ah I see ep3 is on iplayer, will it matter that I haven't seen the first 2 or are they separate issues IYSWIM?

RobotHamster · 24/08/2013 11:13

The first 2 give a background and build up to it, but they're standalone episodes.

V interesting stuff.

manchestermummy · 24/08/2013 11:14

On at least three occasions I have seen people stealing cakes etc. from the foyer. I have always told security but I doubt anything happens. So I actually think Asda is being monumentally stupid.

neunundneunzigluftballons · 24/08/2013 13:35

The men who made us fat was on BBC 2 on Thursday I think it is on again next week it makes very interesting points.
