To think ALL aggressive dogs should be PTS

This isn't a thread about a thread.

AIBU to think that dogs that repeatedly display signs of aggression towards humans and/or other dogs should be PTS?

I'm not talking about the odd growl here or there, but I mean dogs where the owners know that the dog can be aggressive.

As someone who has previously been bitten by a dog who the owners knew to be aggressive, but assured me was under control, I don't give two shiny shots whether you think you can control your dog, if it repeatedly behaves aggressively then it should be PTS, regardless of the circumstances in which the aggression occurs. (Obviously discounting being deliberately tormented or scared).

And before I get flamed, I love dogs and have one myself, but I know that if my dog was aggressive I wouldn't hesitate in having him PTS.

I know dogs are often "part of the family", but really, it would be far more sensible if people were stringent about this and no doubt it would prevent a lot of accidents/deaths!

If the dog was on a lead, how did the fight start? If your dog approached an on lead dog then you are at fault... You should also never intervene in a dog fight, ever. Even if it's your dog, as you have discovered, you'll get bitten.

I think if an aggressive dog is managed properly then it is fine. I also think it is very difficult to define what is aggressive. What about the dog who gives a warning growl to the dog trying to hump it? What if it's a nervous dog? What if the dog snaps but never does any damage? What about if it's a tiny little thing, does that make a difference? I thing YABU. Tomorrow your dog might get attacked and may become scared of other dogs and begin growling at dogs that approach it. Wouldn't you prefer to manage the situation through training or walking in quiet areas with a muzzle, rather than immediately putting the dog to sleep?

Should dogs who are out of control be removed from the owner be put to sleep? Perhaps. But not dogs that are perfectly in control.

ynbu.
may get flamed but you know what i put humans above animals.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 22/08/2013 16:06

"The amount of other walkers who shouted oh my dogs fine, its friendly with me replying well this ones not and its why she is leashed was unbelievable" Omg YES!

I make my dog sit and then reward her with a chicken bit once the dog has walked past.

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 22/08/2013 16:06

It's all aggression. People need to stop puttin their desire to own an animal over everything else.

wonderingsoul · 22/08/2013 16:08

also belive you should have a liceance to have a dog. and i agree that that its the owners fault manily. bu tthat doesnt stop the risk.

id also like owners of such dogs be given jail time if found guilty of mistreatment. i mean real time,

In the same position I would have done the same as you but that is I'm afraid your choice , and indeed mine . My sister had to have her finger sewn back on after splitting up a fight between her own terriers ,her choice . I still don't think that makes it ok to say that all aggressive dogs should be PTS . What did the dogs owner do ?

FriendlyElephant · 22/08/2013 16:09

Any dog can become aggressive though. You can't label a dog "aggressive" until it has already attacked or at least threatened to. Should we just destroy them all to avoid taking the risk? Hmm

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 22/08/2013 16:13

There's aggression, so far only displayed to other dogs. You might not find out that it's human aggressive until it's too late.

But, of course, people 'know' and 'trust'their animals, constantly putting their need to have one over everyone else's need not to be attacked by one of the little darlings.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 22/08/2013 16:14

Yes friendlyElephant kill them all just incase. And with that line of thinking take all cars off the road. And... wait humans fuck! We're the worst of the lot, we should just euthanize the human race to be on the safe side. Grin

AliceinSlumberland · 22/08/2013 16:15

Okay so if dog aggression is the same as human aggression, should we put down all dogs who chase cats? Because that's aggression too, and on your logic it's the same.

I got bit by a cat once? Should all cats be put down too? In the poor things defence it had just had surgery and had come round from the anaesthetic quite badly and was terrified and disorientated. But still.....

AmazingBouncingFerret · 22/08/2013 16:17

I know someone with a terrier who is a very impressive ratter, that's aggression to those poor rats, the terrier should be shot.

A dear, the dog defenders doing their best.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 22/08/2013 16:19

My sister's black headed caique almost had my eye out once. I think aggressive parrots should have their necks rung and roasted for Christmas dinner appetisers.

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 22/08/2013 16:20

You happily carry on keeping animals that have shown signs of aggression and are fully capable of causing considerable damage to humans.

It wasn't dog aggressive before it displayed sings of aggression to a dog was it?

ProtegeMoi · 22/08/2013 16:22

Dog on dog aggression is completely different to human aggression so disagree there.

ButThereAgain · 22/08/2013 16:22

All dogs are aggressive. In the sense that for every dog there is some level of provocation that will lead it to bite.

So the question in the thread title would have to be refined to say that dogs who are aggressive in a certain range of circumstances should be put to sleep. The problem then is to decide which sort of aggressive reactions we will tolerate. Which brings us back to the need for commonsense judgement and distinctions that the original post wants to eliminate.

ProtegeMoi · 22/08/2013 16:23

And if anyone gets bitten splitting up a dog fight than that is insane, who would jump in the middle of two fighting dogs without the correct knowledge to safely do so?

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 22/08/2013 16:23

The point is that it shouldn't be an instant decision in most cases. There could be medical reasons why it happened. Should a treatable condition be ignored and the dog PTS anyway even if the aggression was a direct result of being in pain or being sick?

Chattymummyhere · 22/08/2013 16:37

If one of my dogs ever bit a human (providing human had not hurt my dog first) the dog would be pts, I have children and big dogs I'm not risking a child after the dog has already showed it is willing to bite humans.

Dog - Dog would depend on quite how bad it was, however it would be rehomed as it would not be "fit for purpose" here

LackingEnergy · 22/08/2013 16:46

Can we have any overly aggressive animal pts including the human kind

9 times out of 10 the dog will have some kind of problem doggy equivalent of a mental health problem , could have an undiagnosed medical issue, have never been socialised, or will have been abused to the point of acting that way.

I feel sorry for the poor dogs who never get a chance to live with a family who give a shit and actually understands dogs as its usually these dogs who end up 'aggressive' or as 'status' dogs. Some people should never be allowed to own a dog as they just don't have what it takes to raise a lovely, well adjusted dog those same people rarely have what it takes to raise a child either since children are more difficult to raise than dogs
