To feel so angry and sad that some one would do this to a child

This is why the Mumsnet campaign is needed... I read a really disturbing piece in the newspaper this morning which proves why it is so needed...

www.timescolonist.com/family-of-autistic-boy-asked-to-leave-community-or-have-him-euthanized-1.593594

I have a DD who was recently diagnosed with ADHD and I am sick of people telling me it is made up, and that I am a bad parent, or "well children seem to have lots of lables these days". Sad

it's a very timely and much needed campaign

the letter you referred to is written by someone with a very black heart

apparently, it doesn't constitute a hate crime Confused

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/08/2013 21:18

Shock That is dreadful.

BrokenSunglasses · 20/08/2013 21:18

The actual story in that article is the bit that says a 'community is rallying around the family of a 13-year-old autistic boy'.

So one tosser out of a whole lot of kind, tolerant, understanding neighbours does something stupid and it's worthy of an article? Why can't they report about the positive side of something rather than the negative?

Shellywelly1973 · 20/08/2013 21:36

As a parent of a child with ASD & ADHD- i feel constantly amazed by the attuides of people, especially those well meaning but incredibly ignorant people i losely call family!

My ds goes to a special school, its an Independent day school. He gets 8 weeks summer holidays. My mother asked if he could sleep there...

She also asked me what the other parents do with their dc.

My sister told me he was a gift from God, I presume before she made her realisation, she considered ds a punishment?!

My dad asked me when was the last time i 'belted' ds

etc etc....

McNewPants2013 · 20/08/2013 21:38

A campaign for what.

It was a typed letter of someone anonymous.

It's not like it was a letter with over 194343721 signatures, with names and address attached.

I feel sorry for the family.

pictish · 20/08/2013 21:40

It is a dreadful letter, but it really is only one thicko's spiteful opinion. The rest of the community rallied round.

westcoastnortherner · 20/08/2013 21:47

McNewPants2013 this is my child is the new Mumsnet campaign.. www.mumsnet.com/campaigns/this-is-my-child-about-the-campaign

Yes it is one sick persons letter, however my point was that because of attitudes like this and many other people's this campaign is badly needed.

I read this. I can't help wondering if it was actually written by a child/children. All the exclamation marks and ott language. And signed "a pissed-off mother", that doesn't ring true to me.

westcoastnortherner · 20/08/2013 23:58

Or it is written by someone who is not very well educated perhaps

What a disgusting person, round up all like minded people and send them away from decent humanity

MrsYamada · 21/08/2013 00:24

Is there a link to the actual letter? Period, I don't think it actually matters who wrote the letter, even if it was kids messing about, it's still an expression of an opinion, it's still hurtful and this kind of thing really does happen. Even if this situation wasn't what it seems, there's plenty more out there. I've had neighbours complain about my son who has ASD, I like to think they understand now, but I'm not convinced.

MrsYamada · 21/08/2013 00:32

Having said that, I've had far more good experiences than bad from neighbours and the community. Most people are nice.

PeriodMath · 21/08/2013 00:58

Of course it's still an awful thing to do MrsYamada - I didn't say otherwise.

I was simply offering a thought.

MrsYamada · 21/08/2013 01:06

Sorry period, wasn't having a go, you might be right, I've only seen the quoted bits. I just reckon/know it does happen, so even if this is kids messing, it can only bring something that does happen to peoples attention.

MrsYamada · 21/08/2013 01:11

I do think that nice folk outnumber bigoted idiots.[quietlyoptimistic]

wharrgarbl · 21/08/2013 01:28

From reading the article, my conclusion was that these people are unfortunately living near an extremely nasty idiot. Everyone else seems to be on the side of the family.

SolidGoldBrass · 21/08/2013 01:37

That letter's doing the rounds on Facebook, too. It's highly unpleasant and I suggested to the person who 'shared' it with me that the actual original recipient should go to the police. But it's just one arsehole.

LyraSilvertongue · 21/08/2013 02:43

I bet Katie Hopkins wrote it Wink

crazycanuck · 21/08/2013 02:53

SolidGoldBrass they did go to the police link

Amy106 · 21/08/2013 02:56

That's just plain awful. I really feel this child and his family.
