.... don't 'diet' (ww/sw/5:2) but instead do this :

  • build up to running 5k 3 x a week by following c25k
  • cut the crap (choc, biscuits, lumps of cheese) out of my diet
  • limit my alcohol intake to 2 bottles of wine a week (I'm being honest here, if I said one, I'd fail)
  • walk 2-3 miles a day

Thoughts?

Worked for me, although I just did the running and cut out alcohol. I started at 11st8. I'm 5ft3. After about four months, I was down to 9st12. I still want to lose a stone, but I haven't lost lbs for a while although I've toned up. I think I'll now have to cut out the crap food.

Good luck!

LittleEsme · 20/08/2013 19:40

It's a might fine start.
The 2 bottles of plonk may be your undoing though...

HeySoulSister · 20/08/2013 19:41

what would you replace the crap with?

the walking wont do much....and the wine will seriously hamper weightloss. why do you want that much?

FoundAChopinLizt · 20/08/2013 19:42

If you get into running you may find you don't want to drink the night before a run. I've cut down a lot as I can see how it affects my running.

Good luck!

And join a running thread on here, (do run run) sorry don't understand how to link on the app.

Yanbu. I yoyo diet so am trying to make proper long term adjustments. I am 5ft 7 and dropped to 10 st 6 on WW (amazing!! I was so impressed with myself!!) but i really struggle to maintain. I start off great, lose 1 - 2 stone. Clothes all fit me again and then i stop, eat what i want and gain it all back. I have no moderation. I can diet strictly or eat crap. Nothing in between.

So my plan is this : 3 exercise classes a week.
Cut the carbs (i'm not fussed about them and only end up adding cheese and butter!)
Cut dessert - DH has one every night. I will have a glass or two of wine instead (rather than aswell)
No wine on exercise nights.
If i want a 'treat' have it but make it a concious decision and enjoy it then no more for the week.

I lost 3lb last week!

pantsjustpants · 20/08/2013 19:48

I've been seeing a nutritionist to help me lose weight, I've lost over 2st now.

Things I've learnt: drink lots of water (2.5l a day), cut down the sugar including fruit to stabilise your good sugar levels, eat wholemeal carbs in the morning and def not with dinner. I eat 3 meals and two snacks a day, once I've had my dinner that's it but it's been fine tbh.

dyslexicdespot · 20/08/2013 20:24

Yes- I am sure you will lose weight and learn to love running. The c25k program is wonderful. Be sure to join the various online support groups, on mumsnet and elsewhere.

Good luck!

A good, helpful thread, thanks! I want to lose a stone, that has gradually crept on, whilst I was ill for a year and comfort ate/couldn't run. I am now cutting out refined carbs, drinking alot more water and not snacking in the evening which is my worst time for snacking. I hardly drink alcohol at all so that's not a problem. I tried the low carb boot camp and it did make me see how much crap I was eating before in terms of sweet stuff BUT I felt so sick and ill on it I had to stop.

dyslexicdespot · 20/08/2013 21:10

The beauty of the NHS c52k is that it is essentially a fool proof plan to turn a complete couch potato into a dedicated runner.

All you have to do is download the podcast and walk out of your house. Changes to your diet will happen naturally as you become more committed to the program.

Good luck!

DontmindifIdo · 20/08/2013 21:13

I think that's a good plan! Slow weight loss is long term weight loss.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/08/2013 21:15

Two bottles of wine is about 1400 calories. That's a whole day's worth when you are trying to lose weight. Or, 5-6 Mars Bars.

HeySoulSister · 20/08/2013 21:17

There's also some research to suggest alcohol impedes weightloss in other ways ( my PT told me this so no link)

TeaAndABiscuit · 20/08/2013 21:20

Running is a great way to get into shape-you'll lose inches just from doing that.
I have overdone the running and tweaked my knee so have had to sit out the last couple of weeks and I have really missed it. I have gone from not being able to run for more than a minute to 30 minute runs in a couple of months.
A race or a ParkRun is a good motivator too..good luck!

MissMuesli · 20/08/2013 21:34

YABU to think 2 bottles of wine is a good idea, why can't you cut the wine? The other plans are good though!

Sharptic · 20/08/2013 21:38

Hi OP

I think that sounds like a good plan.

I am heavier now, but got down to 8st 6lb last year by doing the shred 2/3 times a week and eating less.

I still had a couple of bottles of wine a week, maybe some cake, chocolate or whatever I fancied, but all I did was reduce my portions, quite a lot.

I thought I had it sorted, that my lifestyle had changed but I have put about a stone on by stopping the exercise and eating when I'm not actually hungry and finishing my meals when I'm already full, it really was
simple.

Good luck xxx

WMittens · 20/08/2013 21:45

I think that's an excellent plan. I've no doubt you'll see impressive results.

JackNoneReacher · 20/08/2013 21:51

Just cutting the crap and reducing wine would do it. Exercise does make you hungrier. Also you are quite heavy at the moment do you currently exercise? What about just walking to begin with?

Lilacroses · 20/08/2013 22:26

Make sure you don't over eat even if you are running alot. I actually gained weight while training for a marathon a few years ago and it wasn't all muscle by any means!
