Just had my first ever online shop delivered and have just had the terrible thought that I should have given the delivery guy a tip. Should I? Do people usually tip the driver and is he now thinking I was very U not to do so?

I don't tip the delivery guy but I did give one a fiver when it was snowing, his van broke down and he delivered my food using his own car. I thought that was real service.

I think you're very mean not to tip a person who delivers a takeaway.

DfanjoUnchained · 20/08/2013 13:38

I tip takeaway delivery drivers maybe a couple of quid by just saying keep the change.

DfanjoUnchained · 20/08/2013 13:38

Now I realise why they're always so surprised and pleased when I do!

Justforlaughs · 20/08/2013 13:39

I don't think I've ever had a takeaway delivered (not since my uni days anyway) and it wouldn't occur to me to tip. As for grocery shopping, I wouldn't think about it. Although, if I have a regular delivery service or something, with a regular driver then I would give a small gift at Christmas.

Murtette · 20/08/2013 13:46

Why would I tip the delivery man (whether supermarket or takeaway) when I have already paid a delivery charge?
I always find it interesting in restaurants as those which automatically include service seem to be the ones which have the worst service. On Friday, we went out for a meal and our request to have service deducted from the bill was met with horror. We also explained that we'd like the puddings we'd been waiting over 35mins for deducted as well as one of the glasses of wine that we'd asked for repeatedly but never received.

I don't tip anyone ... ANYONE

Not even in resturants

DanceLikeJohnTravoltaNow · 20/08/2013 14:14

I tipped the supermarket delivery guy a couple of quid at Christmas, but don't usually.

MisselthwaiteManor · 20/08/2013 15:47

I don't tip postmen or couriers but I do tip takeaway drivers, after working in a takeaway and finding out they don't get paid. The ones where I worked got £1 per job and were leaving at the end of the night with £10-£15 each, plus tips. Without tips it would have been pointless after petrol costs. Of course the takeaway should be paying them properly but it seems some don't.

Montybojangles · 20/08/2013 15:57

I don't tip supermarket delivery man, I do tip the takeaway guy.

I also give a Christmas tip to the postie and the bin men.

littlemisssarcastic · 20/08/2013 17:44

I usually tip online shopping delivery drivers at Christmas, simply because they are paid terrible money and the man who delivers to me uses his own car and only gets paid for each parcel he delivers.
OTOH, bin men and posties are paid a wage, irrespective of how many bins they empty or letters they deliver.
On the basis that people shouldn't be tipped for a job they are already paid to do, I don't see why binmen or posties are tipped.

I have tip anxiety, it spoils trips to hairdressers for me as I never know how much to tip, I find the cut etc quite expensive enough without chucking another £5 on top. Is it mean to give £3? or is best not to tip at all if its not generous?

picnicbasketcase · 20/08/2013 19:36

I tip in restaurants if the service has been good but not just as a matter of course. I say to keep the change to the takeaway delivery person if its a reasonable amount. I wouldn't tip a supermarket delivery person or a hairdresser, nor have I ever tipped a postman or bin man.

LaGuardia · 20/08/2013 19:38

I always tip supermarket delivery drivers. Only one Waitrose guy (party food delivery) said he wasn't allowed to accept tips, although he did take the £2 we offered. I think it is very mean not to tip these people. Their wages are crap, the hours are brutal and they are saving us a lot of time and energy.

silverten · 30/08/2013 09:04

But surely the problem lies with their employers if the wages are rubbish! And yes, if that meant that delivery fees went up, I would be prepared to pay.

Whether or not they get paid shouldn't come down to customer's personal whims on the day- if they've done the job, getting paid shouldn't be in the lap of the gods, it should be a given.
