What with being on the world wide web and all!

So why are there constantly puzzled responses to anything that doesn't fit with the 'norm'.

Posts in 'Education' during August are often met with - 'why wait til the middle of the summer holidays to ask about this OP?' 'Don't email the school in August, noone will be there OP!'
HELLO! There are places in the world ( inc Scotland) where there is school in August.

If someone posts on a Sunday night about just speaking to a teacher about something, there's always a few 'it's Sunday OP, are you making this up, trip trap'.
HELLO! People in the world are in different timezones to the UK. It does not make them trolls!

Maybe we could have little flags next to our posts to indicate location. That would excite the excel-spreadsheeters!

mrsjay · 19/08/2013 10:44

I will admit to I didn't understand the school year thingthe rest of the Uk have but i asked and managed to work it out over the years

GrandstandingBlueTit · 19/08/2013 10:47

YANBU.

It's the posts asking why people are still awake/up 'at this hour' that amuse me. Um, because it's lunch time and it'd be rude not to be...? Grin

I think there's a pretty high percentage of posters from outside Britain on here, let alone outside England.

Dont be giving them ideas.

Honey

You're not wrong...

PenelopeLane · 19/08/2013 11:00

It can be annoying as you might be talking about buying a bike for example and say "this afternoon I saw....." and you get people saying that its only 10am.

I agree with this - when people make such statements when it's not a major detail a post (ie a 'this morning', or 'this afternoon', or today when it's Sunday in the UK) it feels like the implication is that you're a troll who can't get their story straight. Not something I get majorly worked up over, but it is annoying.

I agree location is important in some posts - ie about legal issues - but all posts.

PenelopeLane · 19/08/2013 11:01

Ooops I mean not all posts

belief · 19/08/2013 11:05

Guess what some of us even live in......... Wales. Shock

Its bad enough that many Americans i know assume UK means England -far worse when people actually in the UK do it too

GertBySea · 19/08/2013 11:09

To the person above posting about ITV player, it might not work inGermany. It doesn't in Australia. The website recognises the location of the IP address that you log on from and places locations restrictions on the site. I think.

I have downloaded a cunning program that I run on my laptop when I want to watch bbc from here that makes the BBC think I'm in England. Otherwise it just refuses to play things.

Expat surfer. Great stuff.

WilsonFrickett · 19/08/2013 11:15

It's when it's irrelevant that it's annoying. So if I was posting about property or divorce, I'd mention I'm in Scotland because Scots law is different. If I'm posting about DS school, I do get irked if someone pops up and says 'school? In August?' because that's just not relevant to the point in question, imo.

rollmeover · 19/08/2013 11:15

mrsjay - l do think that most posters are English - based on absolutely no scientific evidence whatsoever, just a gut feel. More than happy to be wrong though! Grin

themaltesefalcon · 19/08/2013 11:16

I live in Russia. I like posting here at 9am Moscow time, which is 6am GMT. Makes me feel all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to be concocting almost literate sentences at sparrow fart.

BooCanary · 19/08/2013 11:39

Penelope and Savoy you have understood exactly where I'm coming from.

Of course it is useful to mention you are in Scotland or Wales when talking about an educational issue which specifically relates to those countries, but when people just say 'when I spoke to the school today' and the next poster feels compelled to question: 'today! But its the summer holidays, what on earth are you talking about', its a bit tiresome.

HQ just ran a census. We should find out soon who lives where.

As in specific addresses for all MNetters everywhere. Truly. I mean that.

Or tries to catch the OP out in a lie: 'ah ha, you said you have just had breakfast, and as it is 8pm you are clearly constructing a web of lies'.

ouryve · 19/08/2013 11:43

I often have to say this to DS1. Never thought i would have to say it here. MNers may be mostly awesome, but I don't think we count telepathy amongst our skills. OPs need to be clear about things that are different for them from the majority of posters.

I totally get you OP, and had a rant about this very thing on another forum last week.

If I see one more poster reply "Your kids are back at school ALREADY?? Ours are still off for another 2/3/4 weeks!!!" Or "Lucky you, ours are still at home" etc, I will fucking scream.

THE WORLD STILL REVOLVES OUTWITH YOUR LITTLE ENGLAND BUBBLE YUNNO?!?!

The question about the ITV player's not that silly at all - it doesn't work in Scotland, we have to use the STV player instead.

mrsjay · 19/08/2013 11:52
