Re-watched the Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice this week as have time on holidays and also lovely DH got it for me for the my last birthday in February and only got round to watching it now.

It really is wonderful and I now know what all the fuss about Colin Firth is. It's the eyes. It's the way he looks at her. And the chemistry between him and Jennifer what's-her-name is remarkable.

And I feel he's so handsome that at times I had to look away from the TV for fear of being blinded. Grin

And why oh why did they bother to remake it with Keira what's her name?!

Bit of a dated topic I know, but AIBU. Was it as good for you:) :)

(Sending my esteem and undying affections to all you mumsnetters:) even those with less than five thousand a year Smile

MrsG the book and BBC adaptation are also my go to for when I'm feeling out of sorts! Love it that much I named DD after Lizzy Bennet!

MrsGeologist · 18/08/2013 10:23

If either of the DSs were girls, they'd have been Lizzy, possibly inspired by her. She is just such a wonderful character.

RooRooTaToot · 18/08/2013 10:24

My mum told me I really should watch the Keira version and lent me the DVD. I last 15 mins (while ranting) then took it out and watched all 6 hours of the BBC version followed by rereading the book to bleach my brain.

She did not get the character at all. Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth are magical together in the roles.

Does anyone else's heart skip a beat and fill up with emotion at the 'Dearest, loveliest Elizabeth' near the end? I can't even write that without smiling!

Melonbreath · 18/08/2013 10:26

Watching colin firth as mr darcy gives me the mother of all wide ons.

GigiDarcy · 18/08/2013 10:30

Yey, I love P and P (see username!). Love the BBC series, hated the film. Have you seen the Lizzie Bennet diaries on YouTube? It's a modern adaptation done through a vlog. I love it!

mamapants · 18/08/2013 10:31

I prefer the KK version- just throwing it out there. I think it captures the book much better. Plus the bbc version just drags it all out, you can read the book in about 2hrs!
Also don't understand why everyone loves the Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman Sense and Sensibility. Love both actors but they are at least 10yrs too old for the parts and it just doesn't work.

Melonbreath · 18/08/2013 10:35

Mamapants, because hugh grant is poetry in a pair of breeches!

NutcrackerFairy · 18/08/2013 11:20

Oh no mamapants, it is sacrilege to say that!

You are right though that ET and AR were both too old for their parts.. but both are fantastic actors and it really didn't matter imho.

KK is the right age for her part admittedly, but she is such a crap actor that she ruined it nonetheless.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 18/08/2013 11:20

"Mamapants, because hugh grant is poetry in a pair of breeches!"

^^ This.

Grin

Plus Greg Wise plays Willoughby brilliantly. The bit where he's looking down on Marianne marrying Col Brandon almost ALMOST makes me feel sorry for him.

NutcrackerFairy · 18/08/2013 11:22

Aah yes, Greg Wise. He was brilliant wasn't he.

Such a selfish, feckless cad... but quite fanciable nonetheless.

Just perfection!

I am going to get flamed for this, but much as I love Colin Firth's interpretation of Fitzwilliam Darcy, I find the whole series to be very stagy and I don't think that, as a whole, it has aged that well. It may be time to revisit it.
I know a lot of people hated and detested 'Lost in Austen' but I think it showed a lot more in terms of the Bennet family dynamics than many straight adaptations of the book. Alex Kingston was a great Mrs Bennet and far superior than Alison Steadman's interpretation.

Elsiequadrille · 18/08/2013 12:00

Yes and yes, I love Colin Firth's portrayal of Mr Darcy. Greg Wise as Willoughby, too!

Elsiequadrille · 18/08/2013 12:06

Sunnymeg, I think I agree about Lost in Austen and the Bennet family dymnamics. I thought it was a nice glimpse into that area of their life.

I hated lost in Austen, however (I still watched to conclusion). The main character, Amanda (had to look up her name, had forgotten), would have been ostracized immediately because of her appearance and manner, without doubt. And the Bennets wouldn't have dared allow her into polite society connected to them. That hair. That lip gloss! Not to mention everything else.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 18/08/2013 12:10

Lost In Austin was hilarious. No doubt it would never have happened, she'd have been out on her arse but it still was an entertaining comedy nevertheless.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 18/08/2013 12:10

ARGH! AUSTEN*

YouStayClassySanDiego · 18/08/2013 12:12

It is the best adaptation ever!

Colin is delicious and I was always jealous of Jennifer's heaving bosom.

Might see if I can pick it up on dvd, I had it on video. [ showing my age there]

Elsiequadrille · 18/08/2013 12:12

She would have been out on her arse Grin They'd have hidden her away, I think, until they were able to make her leave. And Mr Darcy wouldn't have given her the time of day

GigiDarcy · 18/08/2013 12:34

I can't watch Lost in Austen, I'm too pedantic I think! There is no way that the Bennets would have allowed her out, as said up thread, and also as a JA fan surely we would know more about the mannerisms?

I'm sticking to 1995 P and P. In the film, KK speaks far too fast and Darcy has no presence IYSWIM. Plus the dialogue is awful-Austen esque but not actually from the book. If you making an adaptation use the actual text FFS!

Oh, and 1995 version is on Netflix if anyone has it. Might go and rewatch my favourite bits now, even DH likes it.

GigiDarcy · 18/08/2013 12:35

*she. Really should proof read Smile

GigiDarcy · 18/08/2013 12:36

And *are
Slinks off thread now she has disgraced the Darcy name.

Elsiequadrille · 18/08/2013 12:37

I dislike the KK version too.

ClartyCarol · 18/08/2013 13:03

Right, I'm ordering the DVD of the tv P&P - I've heard so much about it over the years but never actually seen it. At the risk of sounding like a cultural heathen I bloody love Colin Firth as Mark Darcy in the Bridget Jones films, so I suspect I may combust watching him as the real thing Grin.

burstingbaboon · 18/08/2013 14:34

I am so happy that you started this subject! As I said, I love Darcy! I love his eyes, akwardness and desire for Jennifer! O we all dream of having our own mr Darcy!!!!!!
