To think that an annoying noise is an annoying noise?

You're on a train.

A small child makes an annoying noise. On of those high-pitched screeches/squeals/shrieks (why do the words all begin with S?) that only small children can make.

It is annoying.

Potential causes for the noise include:
1 - the child is happy because it saw another train go past
2 - the child is scared because another train went past and made that loud horn sound
3 - the child just got pinched by a sibling
4 - the child just "lost" in a game
5 - the child has been denied a sweetie and is annoyed
6 - the child just got a sweetie and is excited

Do any of these causes make the noise more or less annoying? Or is an annoying noise an annoying noise, no matter what the cause?

Indeed. Couldnt you go give it a clip round the ear 'ole?

Onesleeptillwembley · 17/08/2013 14:16

Hmmm, I think it'd be more annoying if it was continual.

SPsTotallyMullerFuckingLicious · 17/08/2013 14:16

Oh THAT noise. I hate that noise. Still annoying no matter the reason.

Trills · 17/08/2013 14:21

You're right wembley multiple annoying noises are more annoying than one annoying noise :o

Annoying is annoying.

My patience has a tolerance though - I can manage a short lived noise quite benevolently - go on too long and I will be imaging scenarios involving opening doors on moving vehicles or imaginative ways of using my own socks.

I'm just socially trained well enough not to act on it though Grin

Turniptwirl · 17/08/2013 14:34

Annoying is always annoying but it's easier to tolerate if a) you know what's caused it and b) you think that's a valid reason

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 17/08/2013 14:36

Annoying is annoying. I have an extremely low threshold to annoyance, repetitive noises like clicking phone keys or bleeps when texting annoy me, tapping a finger on a table annoy me, clicking a pen top in and out annoy me, squealing kids annoy me, I am Ms easily annoyed... much to the annoyance of my offspring Grin

I love your use of onomatopoeias trills

Still annoying noises.

My dcs don't squeal/squawk/squeak/shreek much because it drives me nuts.
But stomping/stamping/slamming is rife in my house.

Trills · 17/08/2013 15:21

Anyone who leaves their phone set to make a noise whenever you press a button is clearly not competent enough to be allowed technology.

Next door's yappy dog has been barking on and off for hours today. They leave it in the garden when they're out. I am being driven mad by the poor animal.

Cerisier · 17/08/2013 15:53

PS annoying is definitely annoying

MrsLouisTheroux · 17/08/2013 15:56

YANBU.
Loud screeches/ shrieks are particularly bothersome.
Did the DC's parents box their ears or were they sitting in a different carriage?

There was a young child in pushchair with his mother in the supermarket the other day, very loud high pitched squealing continually.
You could see other shoppers recoiling in horror each time it happened and tut-tutting about it.
The mother seemed totally oblivious though, unless she had gone out wearing earplugs :).
Either way she didn't try to shut him up!
