Wet hair at work

When working in a professional role which involves working with people do you think it looks unprofessional to turn up to work with tied up but obviously wet hair?

OP posts:
Trills · 17/08/2013 12:46

If customer-facing - not ok.

If only seeing other staff - why would it matter?

KatieScarlett2833 · 17/08/2013 12:54

I do this all the time. Hair oil in, quich blow dry to the roots, quick straighten over the top, hair pulled to nape of neck, twisted up and clipped and I'm good to go. The bonus is when I get home I unclip and have fab loose waves with no frizz.
Disclaimer - I have long, very thick hair which if styled down takes 40 mins to do properly. The half blast and twist takes 5 mins max and no one other than me knows its wet underneath Smile

CleverWittyUsername · 17/08/2013 12:56

Unprofessional. Surely tied back dirty is better than it being very obviously wet to meet clients/colleagues?

SybilRamkin · 17/08/2013 13:01

You'd prefer tied back dirty hair to tied back wet hair just to meet other colleagues?! Madness.

I cycle to work, shower, then tie my hair back and clip it so it stays neat at my desk. I'd much rather see someone do this than have someone walking around with sweaty, greasy hair!

SPBisResisting · 17/08/2013 13:01

Doesn't bother me, do it all the time

SPBisResisting · 17/08/2013 13:02

Sybil I assume the OP would prefer clean but dry hair actually

SybilRamkin · 17/08/2013 13:06

Oops, was actually replying to Clever, meant to say that.

Crinkle77 · 17/08/2013 13:06

It would depend. If they are dealing with customers then yes but if they are sitting in an office then no

ImNotBloody14 · 17/08/2013 13:08

"Surely tied back dirty is better than it being very obviously wet to meet clients/colleagues?"

dirty versus clean and wet? er- no contest.

I wonder how many men get talked about for arriving at work with wet hair. as per usual- women slating other women for their (clean) appearance rather than whether they do the job well or not. FFS!

SPBisResisting · 17/08/2013 13:08

Oh yes I missed that post! No agree, damp clean hair better than dirty!

sashh · 17/08/2013 13:13

It depends I think.

In my dim distant past I have been on call for the cath lab and called in at 4am, by the time the patient was back on the ward it might be 6.30.

I'd get a shower and change clothes but my hair would still be wet at 8 when the department opened for business.

elfycat · 17/08/2013 13:14

Wet hair? Every time it rains or I wash my hair as I don't own a hairdryer or an umbrella. I do own waist length hair that can be wet 48 hours later if I tie it up into a bun while wet.

Compared to the look of stuck on nails, or too bright lipstick, or that blusher thing right next to your ears I don't thing wet hair is a problem*

*according to my own personal taste and no reflection on people who have these as long as you keep comments about wet hair to yourself.

SuperiorCat · 17/08/2013 13:19

Clean but wet better than dry but dirty any day - greasy hair stinks

nenevomito · 17/08/2013 13:20

No - I cycle into work and have a shower when I get in, so my hair is always wet. I'm in a professional managerial role. Its certainly not hindered my progress at work.

If you can do your job and do it well then coming in with wet hair is neither here nor there.

nickelbabe · 17/08/2013 13:21

i don't think it's unprofessional.

It's fine.

I prefer that to the obviously preened and pulled to an inch of its life hair so many people prefer.

I like clean hair, I don't care if it's wet.

Empress77 · 17/08/2013 13:24

My goodness, I too had no idea people even noticed the wetness of other peoples hair, crikey! Since when did professionalism have anything to do with dampness of hair! Goodness me my dreadlocks would really piss people off then. They take all day to dry too, and it doesnt diminish my professional abilities one bit. Im actually extremely professional excccuuuse me! (But then I dont work in an office and am glad, sounds like a judgemental working environment to me!)

UptheChimney · 17/08/2013 13:24

Perfectly fine by me.

But then I'm lucky that I'm a professional (ie practise an actual profession) and have a career in which my success depends on my knowledge, expertise and experience, not on how I look.

flatmum · 17/08/2013 13:27

Wouldnt bother me in the slightest and far preferable to unwashed, smelly people. I work in a bank in the City and many people do this as a lot of people cycle into work and then have a shower in the changing rooms. I think it makes them look healthy and sporty. Always dry before the business day kicks in anyway so can't see the issue.

Empress77 · 17/08/2013 13:29

My dh goes to work with wet hair every day in a very senior professional role (again, not an office though) - do the people who think its terrible for a professional woman to go go to work with wet hair think the same for a professional man?????

5madthings · 17/08/2013 13:33

Oh dear I often go out with wet hair, just brushed and tied back. I never blow dry my hair!

It simply wouldn't occur to me to be bothered by this in a professional capacity or not.

MrsBW · 17/08/2013 13:37

I don't sell things to people... They sell things to me.

My role isn't customer facing and I'm as senior as I want to get.

Yup, sometimes I trn up to work with wet hair (always tied in a bun though).

Couldn't give a flying fuck what anyone thought. If I was a bloke with wet hair no one would bat an eyelid.

nomorecrumbs · 17/08/2013 13:42

Go MrsBW! I hate this perception that all women must have hair like Kate Middleton. We don't all have the time, energy or money to spend on such frivolities. Some of us have work to do.

EeyoreIsh · 17/08/2013 13:43

I used to cycle to work then shower when I arrived, or go for a run at lunch. There are no hairdryers at work, so I would frequently be at my desk with wet hair. Luckily it drys quickly and is naturally curly so I didn't need to do anything for it to look smart once it dries.

I would rarely have wet hair when I met external colleagues, and it wouldn't be soaking.

In my view, freshly washed hair is more professional than smelly greasy hair.

Onesleeptillwembley · 17/08/2013 13:44

Totally unprofessional. If you can't be bothered to present yourself properly then what else are you too
Lazy to do. Completely gives off the wrong image.

IvanaCake · 17/08/2013 13:44

I never put a hair dryer on my hair. Its very curly and thick and looks hideous if a hair dryer goes anywhere near it (think poodle dragged through a hedge backwards).

It takes a few hours to dry naturally but I don't really have a choice.
