What used to scare you as a child?

I was terrified after I had seen the film Jaws at school, that a shark was going to come up the plug hole in the bath or up the toilet bowl. And for ages I had nightmares about that dead body that appeared from under the rocks in the water. My Mum was Angry that they had shown the film at school I was about nine and easily scared. I also remember being terrified of the Triffids which was on telly when I was young. I remember my sister, who is three years younger than me chasing me round pretending to be a triffid! I still can't watch horror films.

I was scared of the most random things as a kid. Like mirrors (think i accidentally saw some sort of horror where they were like a portal for the dead?), clowns and dolls, and whales (good job there's not many in yorkshire..).
But bless my brother, hes older than me and can remember plain as day, the night he came into my room as i was scared of something. I was about 6, he would have been 11. He sat with me and explained in great detail how my duvet was magical, and nothing scary could ever possibly get through a magical duvet! I was totally convinced and never felt scared in bed again. Still partly totally believe in the magic duvet.......

Bagpuss. Hated it. I still get the creeps if I see it now. I also saw a Nightmare on Elm Street at 10 and just thought it was funny. But Bagpuss freaks me out.

Well dreams about house fires did it for me. Also as a kid at primary school I read a book on nuclear physics and then had a few nightmares about nuclear warfare.

I dreamed that my house was the only one left standing after a nuclear attack on my home town and in the dream I was unable to build a fallout shelter. The best bit is that in the dream I did recall correctly how to build one out of household objects like dinning tables and heavy objects.

I loved the moon dial series...... Don't get me on the horrible Roald Dahl books. I'm dyslexic and when I read it becomes very visual. His books are too scary and not suitable for children. Dyslexia is a gift which some lucky people get but Roald Dahl books are awful. Give me the pictures ginger ale and famous five any day. Thinkthe twits were too scary and remember being scared of them but not as bad as the colour brown. (see previous answer)

I loved the Roald Dhal books as a kid, still do but I had the audio books of the witches and the magic finger....they terrified me in a way the books didn't.

I loved moondial too, it was a bit scary.

I was terrified of the dark (I still am) and I used to think that there were wolves under my bed and in the ironing hamper at the top of the stairs. I have no idea why I thought that. I also used to make my mum fast forward the part in Snow White where the queen turns into the old witch.

larosa and london I did love it, so much so that I bought the DVD years later but I still think its one of the scariest things I've ever seen, especially for a kids show! Think it was the music, and miss raven

Another vote for the AIDS/iceberg video, and Watership Down in general. That film gave me nightmares for years. Wasn't that keen on The Dark Crystal either...

I used to be terrified of flushing the toilet, I was convinced I'd get sucked in Confused

I also couldn't sleep uncovered or dangle a limb over the edge of the bed in case the monsters got me. I still don't like either of those, although I've mostly got over the fear of monsters.

Ooh numbum, I also remember that girl being kidnapped from a caravan in the mid-80s. I was about 7 at the time, and became terrified of having a window open at nighttime in case a kidnapper came in.

I also used to be scared of waking up in the morning and finding I'd lost the ability to speak. No idea where that came from. I used to make 'ahem' noises whenever I woke in the night to check I hadn't become mute.

Waking up in the middle of the night to find my Mum - in the middle of another episode of psychosis - sitting on the end of my bed because she thought I'd died.

And the Wheelers from the Wizard of Oz... Still can't watch that Blush
