To think it is really hard to find nice clothes for 8+ girls on high street?

Went shopping for DD today, found it so hard to find 'plain' clothes like fitted t.shirts in pretty colours without tacky slogans/pics plastered on the front. Everything was so fussy (H&M), glittery or bows/fuss (Next). I just makes everything look 'cheap'. It was easy shopping for my 5 yr old DD.
It's so frustrating!
Shopping for 5 yr old = easy and fun Grin
Shopping for 8 yr old = difficult and frustrating Angry

Have you tried zara? Some of there stuffs great, river island is also great for that age range.

DorisIsWaiting · 16/08/2013 18:02

Could agree more.

I end up online with dd1 (8 but in clothes anything from 7yo to 10-11 yo depending on the shop/ cut).

DorisIsWaiting · 16/08/2013 18:03

Couldn't Blush!!

StrawberrytallCAKE · 16/08/2013 18:08

My 4yo (almost 5) is very tall so I have to buy 6-7 year old sizes and agree there is some terrible stuff out there.

I like John Lewis for basics and some Mini Boden (only ever with a discount code) and Joules. Mothercare sometimes has good basic tshirts and sometimes tesco has a couple of good things.

MinimalistMommi · 16/08/2013 18:20

We usually shop Mini Boden, was trying to save some money...

Haven't tried Zara or River Island!

Thanks for John Lewis reminder.

I was Shock at how tacky it all was!

The high street is just awful, in fact even online it can be dire. Slogan tshirts and short skirts. urgh!

DD is 10 but is tall and stocky but not overly so. I have to buy adult sizes for her. Children's sizes end at age 14 and they are too small for her!

MinimalistMommi · 16/08/2013 18:38

Spotty DD is super tall, she's eight and have to buy age 10/11 for her.

We ended up trying Primark! Picked up two plain white t.shirts for £2 each and a lovely turquoise one and a blue and white striped one. They were £2 too. Felt a little uncomfortable as they've been in news about sweat shops etc...

Ended up also getting two stripy fitted tops in Next (managed to dig them out among trash) and a pair of jeans and also lovely striped shorts from Gap.

It would have been able to fill bags and bags for 5 yr old!

DD is 6 but tall and stocky too. Quite a lot of 10-11 fits her but isnt really suitable. Tops we can buy in an adult size 6 (have you tried that?) We tend to buy boys joggers and jeans as they are plainer.

LynetteScavo · 16/08/2013 18:42

I agree. The only things DD and I seem to like are Boden atm.

The trouble is the £££.

H&M do seem to have a few nice things on line. I would like DD to wear something other than GAP hoodies, though.

SpottyDottie · 16/08/2013 18:44

The Primark near us is just awful too. DD isn't fussy but even she draws the line at shiny polyester and nylon!

MinimalistMommi · 16/08/2013 18:45

Row I haven't tried buying size 6, didn't occur to me!

spotty let me see what Primark t.shirts are made from...

95% cotton
5% elastine
Not bad for £2.00!

Some are 100% cotton!
Label says no tumble dry though...

Life I got some Fat Face stuff for me today, t.shirts for £10.00 Grin

Retropear · 16/08/2013 18:49

Yanbu.

I reckon if the high street woke up to the fact we don't like dressing 8 year olds in tacky nylon, bling and black lace half of Johny Bs profits would disappear.Grin

MinimalistMommi · 16/08/2013 18:50

Ha ha ret you're right.
Is it me or is Johhny B quite a but more expensive then Mini Boden?
I mean I know the clothes will use more fabric but still...

My dd 8 loves River Island and Debenhams , likes the Pineapple dance wear and Ted Baker.
Next is a bit on the babyish side with some things , I also have dd 5 who loves next.
However some River Island is a bit to grown up IMO so I do have to watch what she chooses from there.
Yesterday I got dd some lovely shorts and pumps from Fat face.
Zara has some nice things to.
I find H and M has far too much character items or pop star things which I am not keen on.
Although I see Next has picked up on the One Direction / Justin Bieber etc

SpottyDottie · 16/08/2013 18:52

It sounds awful but I've resorted to Sports Direct to find soft comfortable trousers for her, t shirts and hoodies. They sell quite a variety of colours and styles and DD seems happy for the moment in those. She's not a girly girl (hates pink) but isn't quite a tomboy either.

quoteunquote · 16/08/2013 18:53

most the stuff on the high street is vile,

my DD is age 12 clothes as she is tall, despite having another two years of primary school left,

If I bought most of what is on offer she could podium dance in a night club.

I in my darker moments think the people who do the buying for the shops are mass grooming young girls.

It not even as if I/we are rejecting it on her behalf, she doesn't want to wear these clothes,

It really creeps me out that these clothes are so grim,

I would love to question the buys as to why they want young girls to dress so inappropriately.

MinimalistMommi · 16/08/2013 18:55

Thank you for all these tips everyone! I need to write a list!
Hadn't thought of Fat Face/Debenhams etc
I would NEVER have thought of Sports Direct for simple t.shirts so thank you.

I have the same problem looking for clothes for my 10 year old dd. I usually end up buying her stuff from the boys section, or getting extra small men's t-shirts.

MinimalistMommi · 16/08/2013 18:56

quote you're right it's grim, absolute trailer park trash Shock
