First time poster, please be niceSmile

I listed an IPhone 3GS yesterday on eBay, started on auction and done a buy it now price, within 10 minutes somebody brought on buy it now.
I received an email from eBay saying the buyer was third party and do not send the item and relist it. I've received an email from the buyer again this morning telling me the issue has been resolved it was his daughter on his account and to send the phone to Nigeria with an address, and he has checked the Royal Mail website and has put an extra £50.00 in my payment account to cover shipping. I've had some emails of eBay too saying the issue has been resolved end your listing and send to buyer immediately. The emails from eBay don't look genuine. I went on my eBay account checked my inbox and I have nothing in there from eBay. I've had an email from PayPal as well saying I have a pending payment but it won't be credited to my account until buyer has received the item to protect the buyer. But again nothing on my PayPal says this just emails to my email account.

I don't know something's telling me this isn't genuine?

Sorry if this is long

Any messages hat ebay or PayPal send you can also view online via the website, so if unsure log onto the site and ignore any that don't also appear there. If you want forward them to [email protected] or [email protected]

RenterNomad · 16/08/2013 17:18

Even if you're willing to sell overseas (I've sold a lot to Eastern Europe), you should never send to a DIFFERENT address.

YoniBottsBumgina · 16/08/2013 17:22

Yes - ignore and report to ebay.

You don't have to send anything outside of the UK if you don't want to.

If in doubt as well, check your ebay inbox - it's under "my ebay" rather than looking at emails. If it's genuine then you will have received it here as well rather than only as an email.

I had similar when selling a furniture item a few years ago (on a different selling website). Someone messaged me saying they wanted it and would I agree to sell to them at a slightly higher price than I had listed it for. Being a lot less cynical than I am now, I agreed. Next thing I know, the 'buyer' has sent a cheque but it was for a much higher amount, as a secretary had issued the wrong amount in error (as you do). I was asked to cash the cheque and then send a refund for the difference but minus a couple of hundred for my trouble. Alarm bells rang and I emailed back saying not to worry and to cancel the cheque and re issue the correct one. This could not be done apparently and I was urged to go along with the original plan as the wrong cheque was already on its way to me. I declined the sale and funnily enough, the cheque never did arrive.

In my case it would have been either an attempt to get me to launder money, or they would have tried to collect the item based on me having a cheque that would never have cleared.

Log in to paypal on the paypal site - not from any links - and view your account - you can refuse the payment if it is indeed on there.

Scam scam scam. Shit in the box and send it to them Grin

Harrin · 16/08/2013 18:25

I've had something very similar whilst selling an iPhone on Gumtree. Wanted it shipped to Nigeria but can't remember payment details. I got a full story about how it was for a boys 14th birthday whose dad had died. Don't remember it exactly but remember I was suspicious enough to refuse and report. Don't do it

JaydeO91 · 16/08/2013 18:56

Haha shit in the box, I'm very tempted. Well funnily enough since I've told them I won't be sending it until payment has cleared I haven't heard anything from them.
Yes I did have a story about somebody being posted in Nigeria.
Il copy and paste

just received an email from eBay saying something is wrong with my ebay account, I knew where the problem came from. It was my daughter who had to log on to my ebay account to view the purchase, But ebay had thought it was a third party due to their over zealousness. they decided to protect us both. The issues with my account have now been resolved and confirmed by ebay.

Am sorry i didnt inform you I precisely purchased the item on behalf of a folk of mine in West Africa who has been transferred to serve as a missionary in Nigeria. I have sorted out the postage costs on the Royal Mail website and i will be adding it accordingly to the costs of the item and i want the posted via Royal Mail.

Yes, ebay's software so sophisticated that it can tell who is typing the log on details and was able to recognise that it wasn't the genuine accountholder Grin.

I'd definitely go for the stringing them along option - maybe tell him you also have relatives working as missionaries in Nigeria and maybe they could meet up.

sparklingstars · 16/08/2013 19:04

This is the other he has sent me

Dear seller,
I'm sure you have received payment as I have had confirmation emails both from eBay and PayPal, now that I have sent payment I wish for you to send the item immediately or I will have to report you to eBay and open a case. And do remember to send the shipping details to PayPal

Tullahulla · 16/08/2013 19:18

Don't send it. I've had a couple of customers requesting parcels containing phones to be retrieved from the mailbag as they've since found this out to be a scam!

Balaboosta · 16/08/2013 19:40

This is a scam. I've had the same one, fake PayPal and everything. Contact eBay they'll sort it all out quickly.

AwkwardSquad · 16/08/2013 20:37

We've had this. It's a scam. Do not send the phone!
