Driving to work this morning I saw a mother and her child, both on bikes (the child being on a balance bike) on the road (both wearing helmets). The mother was beside the child, obviously to provide protection but this made them together very wide. They were on a bus/bike lane, and I was in a stream of traffic in the car lane. I was horrified to see a bus pull up behind them, having to pull into the car lane to pass them, and then continue on.

I was shocked as I would have thought that the road is no where for a balance bike, especially if the child could have ridden on the pavement and the Mum on the road.

What makes it even more bizarre is that the pavement was also a cycle lane!

I would have to agree OP, but that's based upon my 2 and how they were when they were on balance bikes.

DS1 was fine to be on the pavement with me walking beside him from around 3 onwards, but I would never have had him on the road. Even now at 5 I wouldn't even though he's on a pedal bike now.

DS2 I wouldn't even have on the pavement beside a road. He's so unpredictable. The only place I take him is the park or promenade by the beach.

I would imagine this child was around 3/4 if he's on a balance bike? Far too young to be on the road imo. My friend has hers on a tag along bike attached to hers and even that gives me palpitations during rush hour.

A youngster of that age shouldn't be on the road. Just too many idiot drivers about and the child won't understand road craft. Just too easy for them to wobble

Crazy to be in the road instead of using a cycle lane....
