To wear flats and a mid length dress?

I know this isn't really AIBU but Style and Beauty annoys the shit out of me. I have a dress I love and which looks really nice on..very, very flattering but it's mid length! It falls kind of mid calf...I just can't wear heels due to a very painful foot issue...can Iwear it? I am a 12...5.6 so not tall really.

Don't know if this helps much but I read somewhere once that the shorter the dress is the higher the heel should be.

The longer the dress, the lower the heel.

I wore slight heels on my wedding day, but other than that flats, but proper shoes, not ballet pumps all the time. I wear mid length/knee length stuff lots.

Wearing heels is bad for you!

Feminine · 16/08/2013 13:16

coralanne are you sure? Grin

I think you have mixed that up!

yeah get shoes to match bag. I would.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 16/08/2013 15:08

Right. Just back. I could not find anything I liked in Debenhams so went to New Look and got a nude ballet flat and a lovely pair of wedged dolly type shoes which are gorgeous. As the dress is a bit 20s/30s in shape, I think the dolly shoe looks excellent...thank you once again Mumsnet! I love that I can ask ANYTHING on here and someone knows!

Flowers and Brew and Wine all round!

I've never met a man who spoils a night out wearing stupid uncomfortable shoes, so I have no intention of doing so.

Everytime I see a woman in heals I think fashion victim.

thebody · 16/08/2013 16:58

lovely so enjoy the event hun.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 16/08/2013 18:11

Star it's "heels" not heals. Smile and they won't ruin anything thanks!

Glad you are sorted. Have a great time.

Neo fuck off with the spelling corrections and blisters and bruised balls of my feet generally don't put me in a party mood.

A beaded or embellished expensive looking sandal is your best bet here. NO big straps around the ankle - go for something with minimal fuss to maximise the length of your leg & compensate for the lack of elevation.

If sandals aren't right, and you want to go for a ballet pump, avoid the following:
patent leather
black
bow details

All the above are far too 'daywear' to wear with a mid lenth dress. Try and go for something fairly structured, something along the lines of these:

As a heel avoider, I agree light strappy flat or kitten heel sandals or pumps in a light colour, metallic or a colour from the dress. Black flats in summer look wrong and too much like you just grabbed you work shoes.

Solari · 17/08/2013 16:45

I always think that whatever you wear, there will be some who like it, some who don't, and a substantial amount of people who simply don't notice or care.

Just personally, I think the only rule to go by is that you like it, and feel good in it.

Hope you have a lovely day!

Trills · 17/08/2013 16:51

YANBU to wear whatever shoes you like with whatever dress you like.

Did that help? No. Because the question is not about reasonableness, it's about style.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 17/08/2013 17:58

Star and you fuck off with the unwanted "advice" about how "heals" aren't necessary. Thanks!

abof thanks so much...I've got two options..one nude heel (wedge) and a plain nude ballet flat. I'll see what looks best but both would be fine I'm thinking.

What an agitated thread (on what) is just a query about what might look nice?

Confused
7to25 · 17/08/2013 20:29

I too cannot wear heels. I always shorten all dresses to just below the knee, it looks much better with flats

VitoCorleone · 17/08/2013 23:06

My style at the moment is midi dresses with sandals.

Flats are fine :)

GobblersKnob · 17/08/2013 23:17

I am very tall and have never worn heels and wear dresses and skirts of every length with flats, have never given it a second thought. I'm sure you will look lovely.
