To want to save money before I go on mat leave!

DP says we 'don't need to save' as we have apparently have loads of money.
We don't. We have enough to get by and enough for treats but I like to put £250 away every month because when I go on maternity leave our income is going to drop dramatically leaving us with only £100 spare for emergencies/going out etc a month. And that's budgeting without factoring in a baby.
He wants to enjoy the money now and not save it.
I think he's being fucking stupid. We don't even have a mortgage, we rent! AIBU?

No yanbu its sensible to save for mat leave. Will take the pressure off you too so you can enjoy your baby without worrying about money.

Yanbu

And he'll agree with you when you can still afford a few luxuaries when you're on mat leave pay!

ImperialBlether · 15/08/2013 21:40

Well, ask him to live for a month with only the money you'll get when you're on maternity leave. Then ask him whether he'd like £250.

pinkr · 15/08/2013 21:45

Saving is essential...I reckon we need about 600 a month when i'm off work to cover bills etc on top of dh salary as i'm the main income. We've been saving for months, in fact before I even got pregnant. Your man needs a reality check yanbu!

Mehrida · 15/08/2013 21:46

YANBU

We saved. Best thing we ever did. Folk tell you that dc are expensive but we didn't realise quite how expensive!

I do agree about trying to get out and enjoy yourself before he/she arrives though.

Holly94 · 15/08/2013 21:51

He doesn't want to go without the luxuries now but he can't seem to see that when I'm on maternity leave if we don't save there'll be no getting a takeaway whenever we feel like it or random days out!
He keeps saying 'there's loads of months to save'. Argh.

Can you work out what your total income until the end of your maternity leave, and work out how much it averages our per month? Might help him see it in real terms.

forevergreek · 15/08/2013 21:54

We had to save.
I only took 3/4 month maternity but needed to completely cover everything above basic maternity pay. Plus baby expenses.
We also rent so needed enough to cover that without leaving us skint
We saved 6months income.

ShadowSummer · 15/08/2013 21:55

YANBU. Saving now will mean less worrying about money once your DC arrives.

We didn't realise just how expensive DCs are before DS came along either.

louloubellamozzarella · 15/08/2013 21:58

Yanbu! We are saving £1000 a month (each) as I will only get statutory mat pay and we are also saving for a house deposit and don't want to eat into those savings when I'm off.

We've been bad at saving in the time we've been together and being pregnant has given the reality check we needed!

Can you maybe put your finances in a chart/spreadsheet and also write up a budget of what you'll need to buy for the baby? That might get it across to him how important having some ££ will be - and will mean you don't need to worry when on mat leave. Good luck :-)

I'm starting my ML 4 days before my due date to try and minimise financial impact. At this rate I'll be going back when baby is 6 weeks old :(

yanbu. I'm not even pregnant with dc2 yet but saving madly for mat leave. my employer only offers statutory mat pay so we'll be quite a bit short every month. I'm saving now to be able to top up my smp when I'm off.

I managed a year off with dc1 but my target is to save enough to cover 9 months next time as we have a mortgage and other costs now.

Pigsmummy · 15/08/2013 22:43

I saved so that I could "pay" myself something every month on top of SMP. I saved about 8K but ran out of money properly four weeks before return to work and have had to get a temporary overdraft.
