I know. I know
Boring adverts have been plaguing us for years
I contacted one of the organisations that do no win, no fee and check out your old loans
They came around and took all my info re an Egg loan I knew I'd had PPI for and as I'm self employed and have insurance I clearly had no need.
They rang me a couple of weeks later and said I'd not had PPI

But more recently I discovered I'd been right after all and have today received £1600

did it myself after comparing the form from one of these companies with a DIY one on moneysavingexpert...£21k later I'm glad I did, and not a penny paid (except the stamp!)

Just contact your bank/ the company directly. My DP and I both had loans years ago (taken out not long after uni, with very little understanding of what we were doing, just needed the money to pay off uni debt) and both of our banks sorted PPI claims for us with no need to go to any outside agency

I'd like to know where to download the claim forms from too. And if you don't have the paperwork, account
Numbers etc, how can you prove that you had a loan/credit card with them?

SilveryMoon · 17/08/2013 15:04

My dp phoned his bank and said he wanted to check for PPI, they had a quick look through their records and told him he had 7 potential claims, 2 weeks later he got an e-mail with the result of 3 of them, and had funds transferred into his account a few days later, and he is due to hear the result of the others in 2 weeks.
Quite a bit of money back from just 1 phone call

Can I ask for a big cheer for Nationwide, who have just sent me £190 for some PPI I'd had absolutely no idea about?

WorraLiberty · 17/08/2013 15:13

Argos did the same to me Dame

They knocked over £500 off my balance a few weeks ago for some PPI I had a couple of years ago, and didn't even know about.

Here is the Financal Obudsman's site with all the info you need to claim yourself.

AmberDextrous · 17/08/2013 15:17

i got nearly 14K back - was a touch!

MrsGSR · 17/08/2013 15:19

We got almost £4000 back by following the advice on the MSE website. It was very easy, they have a step by step guide and all it costs is a stamp. I'd definitely recommend having a look if you're not sure.

Bogeyface · 17/08/2013 15:21

I remember reading about a guy who got back over 80k on a Barclaycard due to PPI, except as his first claim was refused by the bank, he tried again via a claims company instead of going to the Ombudsman.

So he had to pay them 30% plus VAT so roughly 25k, all for them filling in one form and then sending the same form to the ombudsman when they refused it again. So the sake of 2 stamps Shock

I am sure I read about him on MSE.

GrumpyRedhead · 17/08/2013 15:27

I got a letter from Egg, who I had a loan with, to tell me that I had paid PPI on it. They included a complaint form if I wanted to use it.

I did, as I had no idea there was any insurance on the loan, and got a cheque back a few weeks later.

If they hadn't contacted me I would never have pursued it as I didn't know I had paid it! The timing was great too, as DP had just been made redundant. I also had PPI on a credit card ages ago, but I'm not claiming for it as I chose to have it.

PassTheCremeEggs · 17/08/2013 15:35

Poppy wearer - not all PPI claims are successful. If you knew you were taking it out, and the policy was suitable for you, a claim for a refund of it would be rejected (both by bank and the FOS). So there's no moral difficulty, not everyone gets it back.

mylittlepeanutface · 17/08/2013 15:37

Do not use a claims management company. They don't do anything apart from send in the questionnaire that you will have filled in with a cover letter.
I deal with PPI claims for a big bank and we look more favorably on people claiming for themselves, it gives your account of the sale more credibility rather than looking through generic complaint points sent in by a company.
If you still want to use a company go with Gladstone Brookes or a solicitor.

RandallPinkFloyd · 17/08/2013 15:46

I was just going to post the FOS link. MrsCake got there before me. Everything you need to know is on there, it really is.

PLEASE don't use a Claims Management Company. They are leaches, nothing more. They can do nothing you can't do yourself. In fact they actually harm your case by using formulaic letters with a bunch of generic allegations which are taken much less seriously than genuine first-hand complaints. I can't go into detail but trust me, some of their methods are seriously suspect.

In the same way it's best to avoid using template letters from MSE and such like.

Just download the FOS questionnaire and fill it in with as much detail as you can. In the space for account number just give the ones you know but always be sure to write "all accounts" too just in case there are ones you've forgotten about or don't have the details for. The questionnaire contains all the information that is needed. No need for covering letters or anything else.

Help!
I had ppi missold to me by HSBC, I worked as a temp and the only way the would give me the loan was with ppi, which I couldn’t claim from being a temp!
Now, here’s where I need help! For various reasons my account t with HSBC went into default, they are still collecting monthly payments thru a DMP.
When I tried to claim ppi back direct from HSBC, They declined saying that they have no record of my account dating back that far! So, if that’s so, how can they still be collecting? If not, why haven’t I had the refund?
Catch 22 all over again!
Someone must have some advice....help!

whatdoidonowffs · 28/05/2019 19:21

Beware that the claim company doesn’t come back asking for their share the same thing has just happened to me
The claim company said I had no ppi so sorry then the card company said they’d made a mistake and if I filled the forms in I could claim
I got £1800 back then the claim company hit me with a demand for £700 for getting me the money 😔😔
Just about to start a fight with them 🙌🙌
