WIBU to only replace the uniform items that really need it?

Do you replace everything ready for September?

Ds will be getting new trousers, polo shirts, shoes for school.

But his PE kit still fits and there is nothing wrong with it. Tie, book bag, all fine. I'm even toying with keeping the jumpers a bit longer and perhaps replacing them mid year. They're £16 a go for logo jumper and they still fit and not a bobble in sight, but probably will replace these.

YWDNBU!

I am not buying DS anything new for this next term.

To be fair, he is going into year 11 - so has pretty much stopped growing now.

He has had the same sports shirts since Y 7 - I am making them last another year...

Why buy new until you have to?/

PumpkinPie2013 · 15/08/2013 10:22

YANBU

If the items still fit and look decent there's no reason to replace them just because it's september.

FranSanDisco · 15/08/2013 10:24

I only replace what they have grown out of or what looks tatty. DS (almost 11 yo) has grown out of everything which is annoying as it will be his last Primary year. DD (almost 13 yo) needs new shoes, socks/tights, cardigans and skirts plus PE shorts, which have logo and name printed. Her Blazer was big so may get another year.

halcyondays · 15/08/2013 10:25

no, only replace things that have been grown out of or that are worn out.

Mouseyinmyhousey · 15/08/2013 10:26

Well absolutely. It's from my parents who would always buy a whole sparkly new uniform ready for September. Just seems the done thing.

I'm really pleased how well everything lasted (he's going into yr 1) as I'd heard stories of lost items, ripped trousers every other week and ruined shoes. But it's all stayed in one piece and the PE kit just looks like its not been worn.

Ds is going into year 5 and has had new shirts & trousers. All PE kit & jumpers are fine. Last year he had a couple of new jumpers but no trousers.

Mouseyinmyhousey · 15/08/2013 10:28

Plus it will save the joy of sewing name tags into 18854634 items the week before school starts.

I find that growth spurts don't always happen in summer. It would be a waste to go and buy a whole new kit- only for the DC to grow significantly a couple of months later.

starfishmummy · 15/08/2013 10:30

No. I just get what ds needs and buy stuff throughout the year as he grows (or if I see next size up in the sales).
This year he is getting a lot of new things as he has had a growth spurt.

Fairylea · 15/08/2013 10:30

Yanbu.

mrsjay · 15/08/2013 10:30

Yanbu I dont buy what she doesn't need her PE kit is fine well she has trackies and a t shirt anyway she has grown over the summer so she got new clothes but when dds were younger if it was still good and fitted they wore it, why would you buy a new tie ?

Although dd NEEDS a new school bag this year I cant see anything wrong with her old one Hmm

meditrina · 15/08/2013 10:30

"Just seems the done thing"

I'd not heard of this until reading about it on MN. And have never seen it happening in practice.

phlebas · 15/08/2013 10:31

yanbu - dd is going into year 8 & will have last year's blazer/tie/PE kit & skirts. I've bought new shirts, shoes (ouch) & trousers & will have to get another jumper (lost last year's) but that will wait until it gets cold. I wouldn't dream of replacing stuff just for the sake of it!

SalaciousBCrumb · 15/08/2013 10:32

WHY ON EARTH would you replace items that still fit, let alone a PE kit that still looks good as new? Are you insane?

YABU to even ask the question. YWBVVVU to spend good money on it.

and breathe

feetheart · 15/08/2013 10:32

Another YWDNBU from me.

DS (7) will get new PE shorts as he has worn them for 3 years (and DD wore them for the three years before that Shock), new polo shirts and a tank top if I can find one.
DD (10) will get new socks.
I will get both of them measured for new shoes but hope not to have to buy for either.

I only buy when it is needed and usually try and get the next size up when Sainsburys have their 25% Tu stuff sales so I have it in the loft. I also rarely buy logo stuff.

Myliferocks · 15/08/2013 10:32

YANBU

3 of mine are only having new uniform for the items that don't fit from last year or they are about to grow out of as uniform can be difficult to bu during the rest of the school year.
The 4th one has to have new as she is starting a new school with a different uniform but even then she has some of her older sister's uniform from when she was at the school.
Why spend money on uniform just because it is September if you can use last years.

rockybalboa · 15/08/2013 10:32

I don't understand why you would even contemplate buying new stuff if the old stuff is still ok?!

mrsjay · 15/08/2013 10:32

I honestly dont think it is the done thing either , to buy all new every new term if it fits loads of people just put it on their dc, and also folk hand down jumpers to younger siblings where i am for primary school

Mouseyinmyhousey · 15/08/2013 10:33

Medit, it comes from always going to the uniform ship last week in August with my parents. So that we looked all new and smart to go back.

Plus the shops advertising, they're calling me in with their displays.

OP posts:
Ragwort · 15/08/2013 10:33

I have never heard of this before Confused - I only replace buy from charity shop uniform if it seriously needs replacing.

I do think there are some unusual habits on mumsnet that you never, ever see in real life.

Manchesterhistorygirl · 15/08/2013 10:34

You are not being unreasonable! I've had to replace everything this year because ds1 has shot up. Normally I only buy what actually needs replacing.

Ragwort · 15/08/2013 10:35

You must be the dream consumer Grin.

crumpledinside · 15/08/2013 10:35

New tie? Thats barking mad - don't all kids keep the same one through school?

mrsjay · 15/08/2013 10:35

one year i only bought blouses and shoes for one of the dds as I had got her new bottom half at easter as she had grew , people have more money than sense to replace perfectly good clothes just because ,,,

Yorkieaddict · 15/08/2013 10:35

I've bought DS new trousers and shoes as he had trashed the ones he had. I haven't even contemplated replacing anything else as its all fine. Why would you waste money replacing perfectly good clothes?
