And if so, what do I ask for?

DH and I bought a used car on Friday. We are both pretty clueless about cars but he did a bit of research and we had a list of essentials that we wanted. traded in my much loved mini for a more practical family car. We didn't get as much for the mini as I would have liked but got more than our minimum. we paid extra for a service pack and scotchvguarding on the seats etc.

one of the things listed on the car description was cruise control. this wasn't something we were particularly bothered about but was a nice added extra. However, when we picked it up it doesn't actually have this. We didn't realise right away because we've never had cc before, we had to look up what it should look like etc.

When we got car home it was pulling to the left. Dh took it in and its being repaired. I need to go and collect it today. I feel like it was slightly wrongly sold to us and if it doesn't have cc it should have been a bit cheaper. AIBU to ask for some money back and if so how do I go about it? I'm not the type to complain usually and I'm happy with the car but we are a bit disappointed that out little bonus does not actually exist.

Interesting Charlie. It's a 06 Peugeot 308. We have a friend who is a mechanic who is going to check it over when we get it back. I'm not ignoring the pulling problem but they are remedying it.

But the point is that if its a reputable garage / dealership, they put the car through a series of checks before they sell it. We have also just bought a 2nd hand car (for just over £3k) and if it anything was wrong with it when we drove away from the garage, I'd have driven it back and asked for my money back there and then, regardless of the CC issue. Whether they agree to do the repairs or not for free thats not the point. Pulling to one side is a serious issue, I'd just think "what next"?

I know nothing about cars, except how to drive one and fill it with fuel. My DH is the car boffin.

However I would without doubt go back and ask them where the cruise control is. If it's got it, say great thanks for showing me.
If it hasn't got it, say ok, what are you going to do about it then as I've been mis sold it in that case.

I've a few friends who work for well known reputable firms who have admitted to relying on people's 'lack of car knowledge' to not exactly fleece them but certainly try it on with them!

Update time. Car all repaired and due to the issue we now have a year guarantee. We also got £200 back for the lack of cc. Happy with that, I'm sure someone better at complaining could have got more but I'm satisfied.

Sounds like a great result ) a warranty on an 06 car could be very worthwhile!

Very good result for a feature you weren't interested in.

It was undoubtedly a misrepresentation in the advert, probably the dealer being lazy and copying and pasting the feature descriptions.

Although, a quick scan of Autotrader suggests you could have got 2008/09 models for £3500-£5000, so I'd guess the dealer had a bit of margin to play with.

Not round here with 35000 miles on clock mittens. We looked at newer but in our price range and round here (after MONTHS of auto trader searches) they all had around 100000 on the clock.

5k for an 06 pug 308 Shock

WMittens · 16/08/2013 10:18

they all had around 100000 on the clock.

Unfortunate, I've just found 38 that are less than 5 years old, under £5K (lowest starting at £2750) with under 40K miles.

Thanks everyone for the advice on the issue I posted on. I don't believe I asked anyone to search auto trader for cheaper alternatives or to piss in my new car parade. For the record its a Peugeot 308 estate, but I didn't think its body type would be relevant to my question. My issue has been resolved now and I'm more than happy with the outcome, my new car and the price I paid for it thanks a lot.
