to think that Waitrose cafe is not the place

to start singing Old MacDonald to your baby?
DH and I went for our free coffee in Waitrose this morning and first of all we were near a woman who was loudly talking to her child about CAKE. 'Mummy likes CAKE. Daddy likes CAKE' etc. So we moved to let her get on with it without an audience.
Then a woman with a small baby in a first size carseat started singing Old MacDonald. I didn't see the baby, only the seat, but surely singing in a cafe is inappropriate.
Or am I just showing what a Grumpy Old Woman I am?
I've still got it in my head as an earworm and it was over an hour ago!

What is it with Old McDonald? Second time it has featured this week on MN.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 14/08/2013 12:54

Which supermarket cafes ARE deemed suitable for Old McDonald then? Is there a list of acceptable songs for each emporium?

pussycatwillum · 14/08/2013 12:59

Yes, I suppose I could have joined in. That would have emptied the cafe pretty fast Grin

I'd have been annoyed too. Quietly entertain your child, yes. Sing loudly and disrupt other paying customers, no.

Shrugged · 14/08/2013 13:01

Grumpy. You sound slightly as if Waitrose cafes had a strict code of behaviour, like a 1950s library, where breathing too loudly is frowned on! Talking and singing to a baby sounds harmless enough, unless the singing mother was doing 'Old MacDonald' Mariah Carey style...

newrose · 14/08/2013 13:01

Are you stealth boasting about having a Waitrose WITH A CAFE? FGS, ours has only just got a coffee machine!

ChunkyPickle · 14/08/2013 13:08

Grumpy... be thankful it was just Old Macdonald - DS has a lovely song about the contents of his nappy that he'll start belting out at inappropriate times.

Stunt - but they weren't paying customers - they were there for their waitrose card free coffee (which I forgot I can get too... and they have a machine by the door... hmmmmmmm)

BrianButterfield · 14/08/2013 13:09

I think most things go in a supermarket cafe - that's precisely why you take young kids there. Otherwise seriously, where the hell is left where you can get a coffee and cake fix while chuntering mindlessly to a baby? I always found them full of pottering pensioners who were more than happy to engage DS in peep-o or to wave across the room for a smile.

mignonette · 14/08/2013 13:23

All I can picture is a harried Mum trying her best to entertain her child to stop him getting bored, fussy and ultimately making more noise by roaring his/her head off.

Can't we have a little more tolerance? My children are grown up, I dislike bad behaviour by my own or the children of others' as much as anyone but remember well that hope that you can just sit for one moment in a cafe with a drink and not have a child bored and crying...

StuntGirl · 14/08/2013 13:27

Don't they get that 'free' coffee by buying other shit from Waitrose?

bliss88 · 14/08/2013 13:28

Hahahahahahahahahaajah definatly a grumpy old women! You were a child once and it was a baby and a small child lighten up!! You only live once and it was an hour of your time be greatful you can hear and see such lovely things! Our world is full of badness and hate it was singing to a baby! Get over it.

TimeofChange · 14/08/2013 13:28

YABU
It's lovely to see parents / carers interacting with babies and children.

Far better to have a sing song than ignore the baby or be busy on a phone.

honeytea · 14/08/2013 13:28

Yabu, this must be a reverse aibu!

The mum sounds lovely singing to her baby, it's a supermarket cafe not a funeral!

TimeofChange · 14/08/2013 13:30

I did think the thread was going to be about sex under the table or having an internet date in Waitrose cafe!!

Snowyelephantshavewrinkles · 14/08/2013 13:31

Poor old mc Donald. Old mc Donald had a far e I e I o and on his farm he had some ........?

YouTheCat · 14/08/2013 13:32

Since when has Waitrose café turned into some sort of children's karaoke fixture?

Singing to kids is great. Wonderful. But do it at home. Or at baby group. Or anywhere else.

If the baby was fractious, surely she could have just talked and cuddled?

mrslyman · 14/08/2013 13:34

I often sing to my children in public, I don't do it on purpose on even consciously I just can't seem to help myself, I just really like singing to my children it makes them smile Blush

bliss88 · 14/08/2013 13:35

Stunt girl they were having a free coffee too lpl

jacks365 · 14/08/2013 13:36

Must remember not to talk too much about cakes next time I'm out. Dd4 has delayed speech and one strategy given to help is repetition ie mummy likes CAKE daddy likes CAKE does baby like CAKE. You'll frequently find me singing to her too. Wasn't me though as we don't have a waitroise. You are being grumpy sorry.

YouTheCat · 14/08/2013 13:37

Grumpy and proud. Grin
