Daughter is mad because I bannned her from reading celebrity guidebook

So I caught my daughter reading a book on how to become famous. She's 13 and I'm not sure if it's appropriate. I wouldn't mind so much but I came across a chapter on how to make your own sex tape.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Yabu. When I was younger I read all sorts of rubbish including things like celebrity guide. Chances of me actually becoming famous-pretty small. It was just a stage in my life.

Although, I don't actually know what's in that specific book. If it was not age appropriate then I would maybe think twice about it

Toohottohandle · 13/08/2013 23:21

The fact it has a chapter on making a sex tape says it is unsuitable

MollyBerry · 13/08/2013 23:23

Oh my gosh. Just read your post properly!! YANBU sorry! Sex tape, what on earth?!

WorraLiberty · 13/08/2013 23:26

Yeah the sex tape thing is waaaay to much at her age.

Otherwise I would have said YABU to make the book seem all the more important and exciting by banning it.

Katiepoes · 14/08/2013 08:23

She's 13. Read it yourself and then let her, talk to her about it. Don't just ban it, she'll read it then secretly. Banning it just makes it seem exciting and dangerous.

My Mum tried to ban Jackie Collins when I was 13. Result? A huge secret collection of trashy novels doing the rounds at school.

gordyslovesheep · 14/08/2013 08:26

Where did she get it from? And yes totally agree with the previous poster don't just ban it

HeySoulSister · 14/08/2013 08:27

Lol over reaction or what!!

You 'banned' her? Hmm so she will see it as more attractive now and just read it behind your back anyway. Bit if a fail there op!

MrsOakenshield · 14/08/2013 08:31

I think most parents worth their salt would react strongly to their 13-year-old reading a book on how to make your own sex tape. Not much to 'Lol' about there Hmm.

OP, I would sit down and talk to your daughter about the book, find out why she's reading it, and talk to her about the parts that are concerning. What you don't want to do is close communication between the two of you over this.

limitedperiodonly · 14/08/2013 09:50

Caught? Banned? Seems a bit extreme.

Have you read it? Is it detailed advice on making a sex tape or just a round up of things people have done to get famous?

My mum freaked out when she saw me reading a book called Sex Tips For Girls when I was 15. It wasn't a sex manual it was a lighthearted guide to feminism with a saucy title.

Not that I think there's anything wrong with knowing how to do sex properly Grin

runningonwillpower · 14/08/2013 09:54

I agree with Katiepoes.

It's a perfect opportunity to talk about the inanity of celebrity culture and the complete wrongness of stuff like sex tapes.

Banning books is never going to work - she'll just read it anyway.

cory · 14/08/2013 11:09

Me too, runningonwillpower. 13 is not too young to talk about the likely career outcomes of somebody who tries to launch their career with a sex tape.
