She owns her own business. I am contracted to work part-time but have been working full time for the last few weeks, covering staff holidays etc. I am a good worker, always on time and have never refused to work extra hours or all day when asked to a short notice. She is generally a good boss, but is a bit of a show off to customers, making inappropriate comments and doesn't seem to have a filter. Today she told a customer she would get 'her bitch', (me) to get something for him. There were a few customers who witnessed this and they were all a bit Shock. I told her I didn't appreciate being called this, but she says she's the boss what else is she meant to call me? I suggested she used my name. I am absolutely raging, but stayed completely calm at the time. She has used this term about me once before and I asked her not to use it, but it happened again today? What can I do, there's no boss above her to report this to. OH suggests I tell her that her bitch resigns and to stick her job up her ar$e?

Tell her for a bitch you are underpaid and every time she calls you that you will expect a pay rise.
Or tell her to do one and file a harrassment charge ......

No way should anyone at work be calling you names and trying to humiliate you. If you point out that this upsets you and they don't refrain in future, then I would consider that harassment.

From taking a quick look at the relevant Citizen's Advice and ACAS pages, it would seem that the suggested advice would be:

  • Informal chat/meeting with your boss. If nothing comes of that then..
  • Log a grievance complaint in writing. You will probably need to provide instances and dates of said harassment here. If still no luck you can...
  • Make a claim to an employment tribunal.

PS if you have another chat with your boss about it, I would ask her to set aside some time for a meeting as you have something to talk to her about, then she will now it's serious. Do it when you are calm and when you both have the time to talk about it. Make a note of the outcome in your diary. Record everything that happens basically in case you need to take it further or if she tries to sack you for complaining.

Personally I wouldn't walk out. I would follow protocol. As an employer she has certain responsibilities towards her staff.

TimeofChange · 13/08/2013 21:39

I'm shocked.

How long have you worked there?

Maybe have a chat and tell her you'll be looking for another job if she says it again.

I'm hopeless at confrontation - I hope you are better at it.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice. Will keep calm and follow it.

Send an e-mail saying something like 'As per my request yesterday, I wanted to let you know that I find it absolutely unacceptable for you to refer to me as 'your bitch' or any other derogatory term and I would appreciate it if you would refrain from doing so again. If you do, then not only will I be seeking alternative employment but I will have to consider pursuing this through official channels.' That way there is no confusion over whether or not your are joking and no doubt as to the outcome should she not stop being such a bitch herself!

justmuddlingalong · 13/08/2013 21:44

ToC, I'm shocked too, only been there a few months but I know I'm a good member of staff. I've been given more and more responsibillity, but just feel she's taking the micky now. Feels like good 'ol Justmuddling along will do this, that and the next, and then to be called that!

Out of order! We have some in the gutter banter and dodgy nicknames, even so, nothing like this! God, if i said this to one of my staff, in the way she did to you, i'd be up on disciplinary, then sacked probably!

If ou have legal expenses on our home or motor insurance you could call them about advice on how to take his forwards, given that she is the owner!
