AIBU thinking my son should pay for this?

Often of evening I have the laptop on the coffee table.

It's plugged in at the wall and so the cable is lying across the carpet

Last night DS1 (20) stepped over it to get to the window, then started yabbering about something, forgot it was there and stood on it, breaking the charger.

I want him to pay for a new one.

He thinks AIBU

So who's right in this scenario?

He is big enough to look where he is going! He should pay.

He should pay

MrsMongoose · 14/08/2013 03:14

Why is this even an issue? I break my chargers all the time, and replace them for £5 on eBay.

The blender problem could have been avoided if he'd done his own washing up... he should pay

lljkk · 15/08/2013 20:38

I reckon split it.

FreeWee · 15/08/2013 21:22

Our wifi broke and we had to have a cable from the router to the laptop. I was always joking to my DH not to trip over the 'wireless Internet' as a passive aggressive hint to fix the wifi He tripped over it and bust the charger pluggy thingy into the back of the laptop so paid for a new charger. Then a few months later tripped UP the stairs with the laptop busting it properly so it wouldn't charge at all. We went halves on a new one

With the blender story YANBU for him to pay the clumsy oaf!

Strangely enough, if it occurred in, say, an office and he was an employee or visitor of yours rather than your son, he wouldn't be paying for damage, but he would be suing you in the event of injury.

Not saying it's right, just saying.

Bogeyface · 16/08/2013 00:40

Reading OP - yanbu, he should look where he is going!
Reading second post - yadnbu. You have to pay for your accidents, so should he.

StuntGirl · 16/08/2013 00:51

He should pay.

I thought that anyway but your subsequent posts cemented that. He's being cheeky and a bit grasping to expect one rule for you and another for himself.

Dr's son - Pay up you cheeky little swine!
