AIBU to think that you only return a call if you are left a message?

Every time my folks arrive home the first thing my Dad does is dial 1471 and see who has called them last. Then they call the person back even if the person hasn't left a message.

Sometimes I call them to ask something that needs to be answered right away and there's no need for them to call back. For example, today when I had lost DS's shoes and thought my Mum might have seen them when she had been in my house this morning. I called her and no-one answered but there was no point leaving a message and I eventually found the shoes myself. Then when they returned home (just as I was trying to settle DS into bed) the phone rings and she leaves a message saying that she is returning my call. Surely there is no need to do this?

This happens about once a week and I've tried to tell them that if I haven't left a message then there is no need to call back. AIBU?

(BTW: I know I'm tetchy, but that's probably because I've been in sole charge of 5 kids all day...one of whom threw his shoes behind the telly!)

sparklingbrook you may think that, however, I've had situations where hospital/GP/council phoned for an anticipated phonecall and left no message so they only way I knew they had phoned was from 1471ing

Which is annoying as it goes on there on records as contacted client no reply

Hospital/GP comes up as caller withheld generally and I imagine they can't leave a message due to confidentiality. Also they have mobile numbers.

My mum used to leave a message on my voicemail saying, "no need to phone back, will call you back later". She stopped because that annoyed me - if there's no need to call back then why waste time leaving a message? Confused

I think it's an older generation thing. Maybe to do with manners and from a time when local calls weren't free and so it was polite to call back? And maybe they're just not so busy...

I hardly ever answer the landline now. We have caller display. Drives my Mum mad. 'Aren't you going to answer that?'. Erm no. I don't know who it is and everyone has my mobile number. Grin

Schools actually ring mobile numbers first here.
