AIBU?

To not feel any sympathy for drug-smuggling women?

Just that really. Two young women facing 25 years in a Peruvian jail for trying to smuggle 11kg of cocaine. Saw they described as 'vulnerable' in one paper. Hardly. Greedy and stupid though.

They haven't been tried yet, let alone found guilty.

No sympathy from me either, unless it was planted unknown to them but 11kg would have made a considerable difference to the weight of the cases surely?

Hate drugs and no sympathy for anybody involved with them. They are illegal for a reason.

No sympathy at all, and I wonder if anyone who does have sympathy for them has lost a relative or loved one to an overdose of drugs, because then they may think differently. I haven't thankfully but have seen the consequences to mental health because of drugs, who knows how many families would have been ripped apart if these 2 girls had managed to smuggle the 34 cocaine packages into Spain, one had 5.7 kg and the other 5.8 kg. They were greedy and thought they could get away with it - everyone knows drug smuggling is illegal and I really doubt they were coerced - well apart from the money obviously. And now we have friends coming out going on about how nice a girl Melissa is (on our local radio) as if "nide" girls don't commit crimes.

sunny well they shouldn't have tried to smuggle drugs then should they! I would rather save my sympathy for the victims of drugs and their families such as the Mum I know who lost her 17 year old to drugs. They are 19 and 20 - and out partying and working in Ibiza.

One of them is fairly local to me. Facebook was going mad last week with her family frantically searching for her, and apparently her passport wasn't used to leave Ibiza. (Disclaimer: I don't know that for a fact but its what her family were saying and I have no reason to disbelieve them). So, either she did it for money and had no regard for the frantic worry that she caused her family, or she was coerced into it and forcibly taken out of contact with anyone who could realistically help her. If the latter is the case then my heart breaks for her, and her family. If its the first well, it was pretty selfish. But she is the only one who knows the truth.

I have a small amount of sympathy for them. Mainly because the sentence and conditions they're facing are awful.

That and the masterminds behind the gang get away with it and will find other mules.

They've been very stupid but 25 years in such a prison will be awful.

But then I also think of the consequences of drugs in this country and know that we need strong deterrents like this.

Plenty of sympathy. Surprised more dont do it really. They're young, they're idiotic.

And I think drugs should be legalised - all that shit, all that crime, all those gang killings - all GONE.

Poor foolish girls.

Have any of you ever watched "Maria full of grace?" (Colombian film) It explains very well how girls get lured into drug trafficking. It is quite an eye opener.

Walk a mile and all that...

Well, exactly - I wasn't aware the court case had happened Hmm

I'll reserve judgement until the facts unfold I think.

in this case and if guilty,i have no sympathy at all in any shape or form

in other cases where real poverty and fear for your life/family then yes

so no some silly girls that have many opportunities and the world was at their feet (alas many in poverty stricken countries could only dream of) no sympathy at all ,IF GUILTY

I've just finished a book called The Damage Done by Warren Fellows, who spent twelve years in a prison in Bangkok after being caught smuggling heroin. Before reading it, I would have said that the mules deserve everything they get. Now I hope, if they're found guilty, that they're allowed to serve their sentences in the UK.

Whether they're found guilty or not I stand by saying they've been stupid.

The drugs were found in their luggage. So they either knew about it or they've been daft enough to accept a present/parcel/new suitcase from someone they didn't know very well.

Me to Minty - at the levels of bleeding hearts for a pair of drug smugglers - yes of course they haven't been found guilty yet - but they just decided to go on a nice wee jaunt to Peru from Ibiza and some nasty person planted the cocaine thats been found in their suitcases eh Hmm

WeAll · 12/08/2013 20:19

Oh this is the girl who went missing from Ibiza? I kept seeing her on facebook last week too.

Report
sweetestcup · 12/08/2013 20:20

Saw far too many lives destroyed by drugs to have any sympathy, and as for facts? Well the only fact known at the moment is they were caught with a whack of cocaine in their luggage.
