Ooh my first ever AIBU. I must be in a masochistic mood Smile

I went to Ikea on Friday (perhaps that's an AIBU all on its own haha). I was by myself and at 8 months' pregnant I needed some assistance with getting a chest of drawers into my car.

When I paid the 12 year old young chap at the till said 'there'll be someone downstairs waiting to help you'. I got downstairs after a rather lengthy wait for the lift and couldn't see anyone who looked like they might be there to help. After wandering around for a while with a trolley that wanted to go in the opposite direction to me and cursing the boy upstairs for getting it wrong, I eventually spotted an Ikea employee standing at the exit to one of the lifts, not the one I'd been in, on the opposite side to where I'd exited.

I approached him and said 'Excuse me, could you help me get this to my car' to which I received the rather stroppy reply that he'd been waiting there for me for 5 minutes. Somewhat taken aback by his tone, I said sorry no-one had told me where I had to go when I got downstairs, just that someone would be waiting for me and i hadn't seen him. He replied that he'd been told I WAS told where to go. At this point I was starting to think he was a little rude to push the point, as it was obvious I hadn't deliberately kept him waiting!

Anyway, he told me to go and get my car and bring it round. After backing up I opened the boot for him and waited. It all went quiet. I couldn't see him as my view was obscured by the open tailgate. So I got out to ask if all was OK and he was just standing there. He said "Well i don't want to hit the back of your car with the trolley so I need you to put your foot on it while I pick up the box." "Well why the fuck didn't you say so instead of standing there like a lemon expecting me to be psychic?" would have been my preferred reply but being terribly British about it I compliantly put my foot on the trolley and he put the box in the boot.

I thanked him but what I really felt like saying was "your customer service skills need a bit of work mate". AIBU and overly-hormonal or was he a bit of an arse? Mumsnet, it's over to you!

I'm sure Ikea would want to know where their customer services is lacking, and this was definitely lacking.

If he didn't mean it in a rude way then he needs some extra training on how to be polite and friendly, it's not that hard.

You did well not to clump him one Smile

thebody · 11/08/2013 16:57

yeah, he was rude op.

Whothefuckfarted · 11/08/2013 16:59

Of course he was rude...

Mumrose · 11/08/2013 17:01

Def rude!

TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff · 11/08/2013 17:03

YANBU!

HorryIsUpduffed · 11/08/2013 17:04

That was rather unnecessarily rude, yes.

Hungover? Lazy? Who knows.

gingeme · 11/08/2013 17:04

Bloody rude Angry
Ring them up and complain. I would x

fairylightsinthespring · 11/08/2013 17:06

yes rude, and sad that someone of an age to be working needs to be specially "trained" in order not to be rude in such a situation. I would hope that to most people of 16+ it would be second nature to be helpful, polite and courteous, especially at work.

Elsiequadrille · 11/08/2013 17:06

Yes, he was rude.

Groovee · 11/08/2013 17:09

I'd be dropping Ikea a wee customer unsatisfaction note.

prettywhiteguitar · 11/08/2013 17:10

Complain ! He sounds like he needs a slap

MissMuesli · 11/08/2013 17:34

Rude, rude and ride. YNBU

Ever the empathetic sort, part of me was wondering if perhaps he was just a little socially awkward, but then surely he'd be better employed 'behind the scenes'...

YANBU. It's up to the staff to direct/ find a customer who needs help and how does he expect you to know what he wants you to do. He was rude. Complain.

MikeOxard · 11/08/2013 18:57

Rude. Incidentally, are they doing their meatballs again yet?

MintyChops · 11/08/2013 18:57

He was really rude and I'm sure Ikea would want to know about it; their customer service is usually really good.

namechangeforthispost864269 · 11/08/2013 19:02

He was rude which is pretty unusual for Ikea. We have one 10mins from my home and I'm always there meeting my friends for a brew (thanks to my family card I get unlimited free tea and coffee lol)

I'd let them know I've never had a grumpy person in my local Ikea and I've been going there for years and I think they pride themselves on excellent customer service and gorgeous meatballs so they'd probably like to know.

HorryIsUpduffed · 11/08/2013 19:03

We had meatballs there yesterday. Yum.

Vivacia · 11/08/2013 19:08

He sounds like somebody doing a rather mundane job, customer-facing at that. I'd have pulled him up at the time but wouldn't spend time putting a complaint in.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 11/08/2013 20:41

What a complete arse! Complain!
