Just that really, a friend has returned from holiday with a very tanned baby and she said that she tanned through her UV suit. I didn't think that was possible and am worried now as am taking my baby to Cyprus very soon, will I have to put sun lotion underneath?

You need to check the label of the UV suit to see what SPF it has (or claims to have) and plan accordingly.

Generally better to keep babies out of direct sunlight completely, and certainly in the middle of the day.

SavoyCabbage · 10/08/2013 08:57

Not if its a proper one you can't.

3birthdaybunnies · 10/08/2013 08:57

Also depends on how old it is - think they last max 2yrs so if a hand me down is quite possible.

Nombrechanger · 10/08/2013 08:58

No. You can't. Most are 40spf.

KirjavaTheCat · 10/08/2013 08:59

I don't tan through my non-UV cotton clothes, why would anyone tan through something solid that claims to also have UV protection? Confused

It doesn't take long for babies to burn in the sun, perhaps she misjudged it and by the time she covered her up it was too late.

MrsKeithRichards · 10/08/2013 09:01

I don't understand the need for these things. You don't tan through clothes, at least I never have?

gingerbreadshoes · 10/08/2013 09:15

I think MrsKeithRichards the idea of them is that they are suitable to go in the water so by wearing one they give much more body coverage than a normal swimming costume/trunks.

My baby got a tan through his clothes but he is very olive skinned.

Yes check SPF. Keep little one out of sun at the hottest times. SPF does not shut out all the sun's rays.
Perhaps child spent some time running about in just nappy/pants?

Edendance · 10/08/2013 09:50

Good quality ones are SPF 50 but I reckon some are better than others... UVA and UVB rays can get through clothes, more so if they're wet but I don't know why you never seem to burn or tan.

Don't worry yourself, get a decent make suit that specifies protection, Gul do some very good ones for children. Make sure you follow washing instructions too which are probably hand wash in warm water.

We used UV suits for our DCs this year in turkey. Ds didn't tan through his. He is 2.5 and spent a lot of time in the pool with a uv suit and hat on.
But I kept the baby in the shades much as poss.
It will be seriously hot in Cyprus at this time of year. But I'm sure you know that.

Emilythornesbff · 10/08/2013 10:13

Have a lovely holiday.

HorryIsUpduffed · 10/08/2013 10:31

Wet UV suits still protect whereas wet normal clothes don't. Or something.

I agree that your friend messed up somewhere.

Have a lovely time and don't forget to avoid the hottest part of the day anyway. Good time for a siesta Grin

Thepowerof3 · 10/08/2013 13:18

Siestas in our air conditioned room will definitely be the order of the day, can't wait!

We have just been away for two weeks with my
DS and he had a Skins UV suit which was 100+SPF and he didn't tan through it on his body.

His arms, legs and face were smothered in SPF 50 constantly and did go golden however!!

ballstoit · 15/08/2013 17:05

My DC have always come back from hols tanned, despite wearing UV suit, hat and 50+ SPF on face in the day and being in the shade/indoors between 12 & 3. They tan easily and we tend to be up early and stay up late with nap in the afternoon, so they catch the sun on the way and back from breakfast and dinner. They have never burned.

specialsubject · 15/08/2013 17:34

normal wet clothes don't protect against UV, cotton and so stretch and have holes in them. UV suits protect against UV even when wet. Marvellous.

the baby hasn't been wearing one if it is really tanned, and has also not been wearing enough suncream to protect it against the reflected rays. So it has a higher chance of skin cancer and early wrinkles.

Cakebaker35 · 15/08/2013 17:40

More likely your friend didn't use the suit all the time and the baby got tanned when in just a nappy or something tbh.

YoniBottsBumgina · 15/08/2013 17:43

Some people just seem to have the sort of skin where they barely have to look at a picture of the sun and they go brown. DS does Envy I burn.

BellaVida · 15/08/2013 17:44

My 4 all wore UV suits this summer hol. The skin where the suit was is as it was pre holiday. They had factor 50 on the rest of their body and tanned deeply, but they tan easily.

The UV suits were new last summer, but still did the job despite being a little more stretched out!
