to be considering a move to Liverpool?

Just got back from a short break and loved it there, the people, things to do, general ambience, the shops (!), architecture is fab, and houses are so much cheaper than in the south east where I currently live...yes I have already been browsing Rightmove!

Unfortunately no move would be possible for at least 4 years as DS1 is about to start Year 11, but once he has finished school and DS2 (3 years behind him) has done his GCSEs, we could do it. I have friends up there, and my employers have an office in the area, so work shouldn't be a problem.

I suspect the Ex will kick off, he went postal when I said I was thinking of moving 20 miles away a couple of years ago. So I anticipate moving 100s of miles will go down like a lead balloon!

YANBU. Great place to live.

I live 20 minutes by train from Liverpool and love it.

Went in on the train today with DS (3.7) had a lovely morning at the World Museum (which is free) then out for dinner before getting the train home. City centre is big enough without being too big and during the day I always feel safe.

Lovely city.

We went to the World Museum on Wednesday! (and the Walker Art Gallery, the Liverpool Museum and the Maritime Museum...) I thought it was great that the town centre is small emough you could do all of them in a day (just about!) and walk between them too.

I felt really safe there too which tbh I would never do in central London (although I am fine in my own small town)

YANBU it's my home town and I now live in the Midlands - would move back in a heartbeat but for the kids and my ex (who is a good dad and see's them regularly - it would break his heart)

I plan to go back in about 10 years though Grin

It's a fantastic place. I'd move there tomorrow if I could

I bloody love it and would have stayed there if work was easier to come by. Lovely size, proper culture, nice food, lovely people.

VelvetSpoon · 09/08/2013 19:35

Glad everyone thinks I am nbu! :)

It was great - and the sun was shining too.

And I forgot about the men... Saw more attractive, well groomed, well dressed ones in 3 days than I would in 3 months at home!

I need to move Grin

I am a mature student at the University so am back and forth from Scotland a lot (I lived there in term-time for the past two years) and I would say...yes it is a great place to live, great museums (more than anywhere outside London in England) a vibrant art scene, great pubs. Everyone really friendly. (I foolishly didn't take advantage of this as I was missing my wife something chronic and was in a mope a lot of the time)

It is also one of the safest large cities in the UK (despite all the shite that gets written about it)

Yes it is a great place to live, but work in a lot of fields is very hard to find. The original plan was for my wife to come down to live with me there, but couldn't get a suitable job. The situation for female workers is particularly bleak, something like two thirds of women working in Liverpool are on the minimum wage.

Parts of the city are pretty bleak, a failed housing regeneration project in TOxteth has left loads of houses boarded up. The city is also depopulating, so parts of it are pretty barren. That said houses are very cheap. I would stick to the south side of the city centre, it is more cosmopolitan than the north.

Oh yeah...if you're thinking of moving from London, there's a very good and surprisingly affordable train service, which may reassure your ex. From the Midlands it is as cheap as chips to get to.

PS. If you've not already, watch Terrance Davies's 'Of time and the city' - his own love-letter to Liverpool.

I was in the World museum today as well. Mine was the three year old having a tantrum because he didn't understand he had to share the train toy thing on the ground floor.

Liverpool really is amazing. The north-west has a lot to offer.

Mine was the 3 year old having a tantrum because I told him he couldn't take one of the star fish home!

YANBU, I couldn't imagine living elsewhere. Brilliant city. Never short of things to do, and everything I need is within a 10 minute drive/25 minute bus ride Smile
