He is 13m. Doesn't take much interest in water so I have been making up fruity teas, cooling them and popping them in his sippy cup. He drinks the lot.

Usually blackcurrant, lemon and ginger or green tea. About half the strength that I would have.

My mil looked like a slapped arse when she seen.

Apparently I used to love Camomile tea when I was little.

Crannog · 09/08/2013 12:48

Camomile tea is meant to be good for teething.
I wouldn't think it was a problem as long as there was no caffeine.

MissMuesli · 09/08/2013 12:48

I'm not sure about the health implications of fruity tea? Does it still have caffeine in, in which case I would say YABU to let your son have it has his "main" drink. Also although not an issue right now but alot if schools and nurseries only offer water or milk to drink so might be worth encouraging water if you can! Would very diluted orange juice be a better compromise?

PlotTwist · 09/08/2013 12:49

I was going to do the shocked face until I saw they were fruity teas. Normal tea at that age? No, because of the caffeine, but fruit tea? I would think that was fine.

Caitycat · 09/08/2013 12:50

I don't know, but I would have thought that unsweetened herbal teas would be healthier than the squash that a lot of children drink at that age. Avoid black tea though as I think caffeine is bad for them.

YoniRanger · 09/08/2013 12:50

I would have thought fruit tea would be better than fruit juice or squash.

Cant see the harm, only thind dentist said was that fruit teas can contain lots of natural sugar

Doobiedoobedoobie · 09/08/2013 12:56

Fruit teas yanbu but there's a lot of caffeine in green tea so I'd avoid that tbh

GobblersKnob · 09/08/2013 12:57

Fruit teas do not contain any sugar and are fine, mine both loved them, green tea contains caffine though, so I wouldn't be giving him that.

coraltoes · 09/08/2013 12:58

they sell fennel teas for children in planet organic. if it is good enough for the hippies, it is good enough for the non-hippies surely!

burberryqueen · 09/08/2013 12:59

that sounds really nice - i did start giving mine cold camomile tea after a v isit to italy, and certain members of my family were like....wtf are u doing?
well it made them calmer at bedtime anyway.

Jan49 · 09/08/2013 12:59

I would persist in giving him water. Otherwise he'll get used to sweeter tastes and won't drink water at all.

Elsiequadrille · 09/08/2013 13:00

I was going to do the shocked face too Grin We used lots of camomile (it's nicer making own from dried camomile, I think).

FuzzyWuzzywasaWoman · 09/08/2013 13:03

Better than regular tea but fruit teas still have lots of natural sugars in as fruit juice would..not sure if any less or more than fruit juice though sorry. Green tea also contains caffeine which is not recommended for babies. I would still try to encourage water with his meals if you can, and limit the amount of fruity drinks.

ImperialBlether · 09/08/2013 13:04

I'd just give him water.

Pigsmummy · 09/08/2013 13:07

Green tea is a strong antidioxant and I wouldn't give that to a baby personally. Also as an adult no more than two a day.

Katiepoes · 09/08/2013 13:10

There is no sugar in fruit tea!

Mine drinks tea all the time, the only way we can get water into her. There are loads of varieties - she especially likes the one made with hibiscus flowers because of the colour. Usually she gets a rosehip & lein one, or ginger (as that's what I like too).

Those who 'persist in trying water' - there are toddlers that simply will not drink it. I have one.

spiderlight · 09/08/2013 13:11

My DS loved cool fennel tea, and camomile and vanilla. Won't touch them now, mind!

ppeatfruit · 09/08/2013 13:16

NYANU as long as you're not adding sugar (there's no way there's much natural sugar in half water fruit teas). I would try giving mint tea which is also lovely and good for stomachs as is camomile (agree it's calming).

HorryIsUpduffed · 09/08/2013 13:19

DS(2) likes camomile tea.

The problem with black tea is something to do with mineral absorption, isn't it? Apart from the caffeine I mean.

MrsKeithRichards · 09/08/2013 13:28

He has had peppermint tea, big pumps after so must have worked!

ShadeofViolet · 09/08/2013 13:34

DS2 loved camomile tea.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 09/08/2013 13:35

It's got no caffeine so no problem. I've always given warm fruit tea with a bit of honey when the kids have colds. Since they were old enough to have honey.

Mrsmorton · 09/08/2013 13:38

Your dentist might have said that fruit teas can be quite acidic (they can) but no sugar...

thegreylady · 09/08/2013 15:00

mine love lemon and ginger tea with half a teaspoon of honey if yhey have a sore throat.Otherwise cranberry or blackcurrant are great winter drinks once yhe dc are over 12 months.
