To think if I wanted to listen to dogs barking all day, I'd have bought a dog?!

That's it really, I don't have a dog or any pets except my 2 year old and generally live quite considerately, no said 2 year old screaming in the garden, no loud music after dark etc. However my neighbours on either side both have dogs who spent all day in the garden and consequently alot of time barking at one another! Angry

It's driving me slowly crazy and ruining my afternoon naps

Have you asked them about it? If they're out all day they may not be aware?

whats4teamum · 09/08/2013 12:13

Ha do you live near me?

The dog next door barks so loudly it is like it is next to me yet we cannot hear much other noise and the vicars dog barks loudly in the garden. They often set each other off.

I was outside the other night and heard someone who I presume to be an equally pissed off neighbour yell "SHUT UP DOG."

Do people become oblivious to the noise their dog is making?

YANBU. Similarly, if I had wanted to pick up cat shit in my garden I would have a lovely cat of my own...

Perhaps it will scare the dogs into silence?

Eyesunderarock · 09/08/2013 12:20

Robot, if they are out all day then they shouldn't have dogs.
Bored, pissed off and noisy dogs.

LouiseAderyn · 09/08/2013 12:25

My neighbour has one, which they put in the garden at night and the poor little bugger barks for hours - drives me batshit!

I feel this way about dog poo too - I have no dog yet am continuously having to dodge the mess left by other people's dogs.

I think this is why the British are not allowed to routinely own guns - there would be mass murder of inconsiderate dog owners!

inallmydays · 09/08/2013 12:28

i had a neighbour who got so worked up about my dog it got obsessive, she threw stones at him , put chicken bones over the fence , constantly shouted at him , i counted his barks one day he did 3 woofs and she went hysterical at him ,had a dog trainer round (no hes fine) dog warden ( no hes just barking like a normal dog )she made stories up that i left him howling, sometimes non dog owners do get a little obsessed about a few barks.

littlewhitebag · 09/08/2013 12:32

How much is a lot of barking? Just so we can get a clear idea.

rumbleinthrjungle · 09/08/2013 12:38

Anything done to scare the dog will only make it bark a whole lot more and be even more obsessive about it. A lot of persistent barking comes from the dog being anxious. My dog is an anxiety barker but she isn't allowed in the garden unsupervised to bark herself silly at any sound or movement, and she's crated when at home alone so she settles and sleeps instead of drives the neighbourhood batty.

You could think about putting a note through the door to say the dog was barking a lot, or talk to the council or RSPCA. If the dogs are barking for hours regularly so one of those agencies can come and hear it, the owners need to be asked to do something about it and they'll advise and follow up with them.

Inallmydays that is just cruel, I would never do anything like that! I have kind of had a passive aggressive word with the neighbours usually just a "wow, the dogs are certainly very chatty today!" with a big smile!

As for how long, it depends on if both dogs are out as it can easily be upto an hour or so then, which doesn't sounds like a lot but is always when I have a headache or when DD is napping! Depending on how often the dogs go out maybe 3/4 times for about 20 mins?

To be honest the dogs drive me slightly crazy but other than that my neighbours are lovely, both sides mow my lawn occasionally as I'm a single mum, so I don't actually want to case any bad feeling or confront them, I just needed a moan!

Rumble, I'm not sure if they are anxious or just territorial, I live in a house that's the last house on a dog walking lane so lots of dogs go up and down and set the dogs off, and if both sides are out at the same time that sets then off too!

We will soon have new neighbours with a dog and I'm hoping this doesn't happen.
The guy already eyed the hole in the hedge and said he's a bit worried about the dog.
Well yes mate that's why you need to sort it out as its YOUR BOUNDARY.
If it gets in my garden with my two yr old ill not be happy as she's allergic.

DanceParty · 09/08/2013 13:05

The culprit where I live is a policeman! He has 2 dogs - outside dogs who sleep in the conservatory and prowl the garden day and night barking. He's gone all day so doesn't hear them, and he sleeps out the front so doesn't hear them. I am pig sick of it !!!

inallmydays · 09/08/2013 13:09

an hour of barking would drive me nuts as well ,i wouldnt let mine go on for any longer than it takes me to run out and get them in or tell them to be quiet , it is worth having a word , or ring the local dog warden ,dog barking can really cause a nasty atmosphere with neighbours , hope it gets sorted .

Ledkr · 09/08/2013 13:09

Are they police dogs? How annoying.

Nicola19 · 09/08/2013 13:17

OP, I had the same problem. Neighbour's dog yapped continuously for hours whenever they were out. I put a couple of anonymous notes through making them aware and asking them to think about possible solutions. Eventually I spoke to the Dog Warden dept in the council. They were brilliant, they wrote a letter to the neighbours saying there was a problem and gave them advice. A month later the council wrote to me asking if all was fine and if not to start filling in a noise schedule. It had all stopped from that first letter they were sent. Dog hated being alone and it just wasn't on for poor thing to be anxious and barking all the time and for us to all hear it.

lollilou · 11/08/2013 09:27

whats4teamum do you live near me! We have a dog next door that is put in a cage outside at night and it barks all the time. Last night I put my head out of the door and yelled "Shut up dog!"
