To not understand a lot of threads?

When quoting another posters post it used to be the case that people would either use quotation marks or bold the text.

Nobody bothers with that anymore and people just lift entire paragraphs and then add their own comments underneath.

It doesn't make any sense I am constantly reading threads with a sense of déjà vu.

Why is everyone doing this?

Its annoying yes, particularly if you read the threads back to front then you have no idea its a quote.

I bold quotes & names, its just easier for anyone reading :)

FruOla · 09/08/2013 08:49

I agree. I bold names and enclose the copied text in quotation marks and make it italics.

Perhaps some people just don't realise it's good netiquette?

YouStayClassySanDiego · 09/08/2013 08:51

Me too, I bold quotes and poster's names, makes life so much easier. Wink

MardyBra · 09/08/2013 08:53

I usually do quotation marks. I agree it's annoying.

There is one very persistent offender, but otherwise she is a lovely MNer so I won't name and shame.

fluffyraggies · 09/08/2013 08:57

Y'know what i hate?

Folks posting just ''what Xposter said''.

I mean .... ugh.
We then have to scroll all up (or down) if we care enough to find out what X said and that's really annoying! QUOTE THEM PLEASE!

Justforlaughs · 09/08/2013 09:05

Don't know how to italic script but I do surround quotes with quotation marks and make them bold, I thought that was what everyone did. Maybe I don't spend enough on here as I hadn't noticed this trend. Wink

HoneyDragon · 09/08/2013 09:06

It might be mildly annoying but the longest threads are only 1000 posts. Surely you can can recognise you've already read it? It doesn't make it incomprehensible.

celticclan · 09/08/2013 09:08

Good it's not just me then!

I rarely see people using quotation marks or italic text etc these days. I have given up on reading some long threads as my head hurts trying to decipher who said what.

The thread about tax breaks for childcare is particularly confusing everyone is cutting and pasting and the debate is going round and round in circles because nobody seems to be clear on anyone's opinions!

OP posts:
celticclan · 09/08/2013 09:13

Clearly some posters are confused HoneyDragon because they are disagreeing with the wrong posters on some of the threads I have looked at recently.

If you view in the app bolding doesn't show up, so they could be bolding but you can see it.

celticclan · 09/08/2013 09:36

I didn't realise that Fandango. I use the app on my iPhone that is probably what is happening then.

I must admit I'm not overly keen on the app it isn't always easy to use and I hate the way it rarely refreshes.

I find it helpful when people use bold or quotation marks, and I do get confused on thread a lot shorter than 1000 posts.

It's not like people are doing it on purpose though.

FruOla · 09/08/2013 09:45

"I rarely see people using quotation marks or italic text etc these days."

I must be rather old-fashioned then, celticclan Grin

I didn't know that about the app either.

MardyBra · 09/08/2013 10:00

Honeydragon I skimread a lot of threads and don't necessarily read every post. and I have the memory of a gnat

HoneyDragon · 09/08/2013 10:30

I just guess I've got used to it because so many people insist on using the app and the app is shit

I'm fine with it as long as people at least separate them into distinct paragraphs.

I prefer quotations in italics, but I can still understand the thread.
