school trousers not to be made of polyester

Can anyone tell me if there is any reasonably price 100% cotton boys school trousers out there?

Living in Scotland our kids go back to school soon and at the moment all I seem to be able to find are polyester viscose teflon etc. I would no more wear that all day long than fly in the air, so why should my child?
Sorry to rant but its starting to do my head! Everyday jeans and chinos etc for boys seem to last perfectly well when at home why do they need to be coated like a frying pan when they go to school?

Because most people have neither the time nor the inclination to provide 5 pairs of trousers, (clean pair for each day) that will need ironing and cost a lot, when the ordinary teflon coated £3 a pair ones will stay cleaner a bit longer and emerge from the washer almost dry and be crease free and ready to wear after a short tumble/half hour on the radiator? M&S do some.

Snatchoo · 07/08/2013 23:30

I don't mean to sound condescending, but is it really that important?

Surely you wouldn't wear them because you are an adult and more at risk of thrush and smells whereas a small child isn't? A small child is more at risk of spills and knees wearing through which is why school clothes are Teflon coated!

Babyroobs · 07/08/2013 23:30

I got some Organic cotton ones from Tesco a few years ago, but not sure if they still do them. They were extremely cheap in the reduced section (they must ahve been struggling to shift them!). They were an absolute nightmare to iron.

My child doesn't need teflon coating in his other clothes why would he need it at school! Also he does pretty well in jeans chinos etc without exploding

However mostly its because he has sensitive skin and in the warm school environment gets eczema in the bends of his knees.

Really just needing to rant and thin I may have solved the problem with H&Ms black chinos at £6. If anyone else can suggest anything helpful I would appreciate it.

What DDs want to know is why most school trousers are made of such loose weave crap polyester they let the wind through.

accessorizequeen · 07/08/2013 23:41

Mothercare used to do bamboo ones, they were very soft and comfortable tho didn't wash that well.

LEMisdisappointed · 07/08/2013 23:48

I now have an image of boys shorts made out of stalks of bamboo Grin

Dumpylump · 07/08/2013 23:54

I see you may have already found a solution, but I buy Gap black chinos for school. They're cotton and pretty hardwearing, although an absolute bastard to iron.

NoComet · 08/08/2013 10:14

LEM Grin I always picture panda foid growing in DD1's walking boots.

Her favourite hiking socks are bamboo. They actually feel lovely.

I have bought M&S's skinkind trousers which are 100% cotton. I have sometimes found 100% cotton trousers in ASDA, only in grey though. Can't find 100% cotton grey shirts though.

For those of you who don't understand what the deal is, the skin of kids with eczema and sensitive skin itches like crazy with acrylic and polyester clothing (and pure wool for that matter) which is at the very least uncomfortable and not exactly learning conducing, and at its worst, it can aggravate eczema to the point of infection.

I'd much rather pay £5 for two pairs of polyester trousers than the current £10 for just one pair of cotton trousers which won't last quite as long.

Snatchoo · 08/08/2013 11:36

Oh ok. Eczema is pretty horrific so I'm with you on that one!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 08/08/2013 12:16

Early would this help? They're quite expensive, but it might be worth it to stop that horrible itching.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 08/08/2013 12:18

Oops, here's the link!

Loa · 08/08/2013 12:39

M&S - but for future reference start looking around easter time next year as they often run low on stock.

DS grew out of his early this year and I was dreading having to pay the high prices from the excame clothing web sites - looked at M&S and they were there and already running low in stock in younger sizes.

EarlyIntheMorning · 08/08/2013 20:28

Hi Polka yes, thank you, that's the only supplier I have found. Unfortunately they're out of stock for size 9 but I keep checking daily. They're £16 each!!!!

revealall · 08/08/2013 20:40

We used the M&S ones but the quality was poor. The turn ups at the bottom unraveled within a month and they looked very worn and crumpled very quickly there was only the black left when we brought them).

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/08/2013 11:51

Oh that's a pity. It's a pain isn't it?

My DSis used to go to school with tubifast under her blouse when her elbows were bad. Fortunately mine was more my wrists, so didn't tend to be as annoying, but we both used to like summer uniform better Grin

KateScriv · 21/01/2014 21:16

I am looking for polyester and viscose free school trousers and have just found a website called ecooutfitters.co.uk which does 100% organic cotton school uniform including trousers. Pricey but worth it I think considering the amount of wear they get out of them.
